We gather a great deal of incidental knowledge from pets.If we look after them properly we learn what they like and dislike. We do not set out to gain this knowledge purposely, but in attending to our pets we gain it by the way. It is got without our realizing it.
In keeping our dogs or cats we learn about various diseases that can affect them, and the cures for these diseases. We learn how much sleep they need and what kind of food keeps them healthy. In looking after our fish we learn about the composition of water. We get to know what kinds of fish can live peacefully together and what kinds are hostile(敌对的)to each other. We learn that animal, fish and birds have a lot of things in common with human beings.
If children keep pets their general education is helped by this kind of incidental knowledge. One little incident after another in which their pets are involved adds to their store of learning. It is a more interesting form of learning than that given in the biology lesson in school.People who keep pets should have a sense of responsibility towards them.Children, too, should be taught to be responsible.Pets are completely dependent on their owners and the owners should respond to this dependence by looking after them.Irresponsible behavior towards pets is a form of cruelty.
In deciding to keep a pet we take on a task,we make ourselves responsible for providing proper food and shelter for the pet.In a crowded city like Hong Kong, where there is so little room for the exercise required by large pets,we should think twice before undertaking the responsibility of keeping one.

While income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face. Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one. This phenomenon(现象)is commonly known as “Empty Nest Syndrome”(空巢综合症).
In order to seek better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home. Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries. Whatever the case, it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what they actually do. This geographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response(回应)in time for their aged parents living by themselves.
The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as “distant parent phenomenon”, which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries. Our society has not yet been well prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”.
61.According to the passage, the loneliness of aged parents is mainly caused by _________.
A.their earlier experience of feeling lonely
B.the unfavorable living conditions in their native countries
C.the common worry about their income
D.the geographical distance between parents and children
62.Many young people have gone abroad, leaving their aged parents behind, to _________.

B.they can give some help to their parents back home
C.they cannot do what they should for their parents
D.they believe what they actually do is right
64.From the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.
A.the situations in the developed and developing countries are different
B“Empty Nest Syndrome” has arrived unexpectedly in our society
C.children will become independent as soon as they go abroad
D.the aged parents are not fully prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome

There are
many stereotypes( 定型 ) about the character of people in various parts of the United
States. In the Northeast and Midwest, people are said to be closed and private(
自私的). In the
South and West, however, they are often thought of as being more open and
hospitable (好客). Ask
someone from St. Louis where the nearest sandwich shop is, and he or she will politely
give you directions. A New Yorker might eye you at first and after deciding it
is safe to talk to you, might give you a rather unexpected explanation. A
person from Georgia might be very kind about directing you and even suggest
some different places to eat. A Texan just might take you to the place and
treat you to lunch.
American stereotypes
are abundant. New Englanders are often thought of as being friendly and
helpful. Southerners are known for their hospitality and warmth. People from
the western part of the United States are often considered very outgoing. These
differences in character can be traced to different factors such as climate,
living conditions, and historical development.
When travelling from
place to place, Americans themselves are often surprised at the differing
degrees of friendliness in the United States.

作文参考答案:
Nowadays, the society is developing fast and many parents across China want their children to cope with this rapid change and be well prepared for their future. Beside their regular studies in schools, their parents want them to attend all kinds of other classes such as piano class, dance class, arts class, calligraphy class and chess class, laying a heavy burden on their shoulders. As a result, the children almost have no time to play.
I don't think this is right. I believe parents should let their children develop their talent by their own choice and interests and give them enough time and space to learn what they want to. So, the children can have a happy and enjoyable life.
