It was midnight in Paris and we were rolling toward Avenue Bosguet. As we came to the Pont Alexandra Ⅲ, the taxi slowed down, for the traffic light was red against us, and then, without stopping, we sailed through the red in a sudden burst of speed. The same performance was repeated at the Alma Bridge. As I paid the driver, I asked him why he had driven through two red lights.

“You ought to be ashamed of yourself, breaking the law and endangering your life that way,” I protested(抗议).

He looked at me, astonished. “Ashamed of myself? I am a law-abiding(守法的) citizen and have no desire to get killed either.” He cut me off before I could protest.

“No, just listen to me before you complain. What did I do? Went through a red light. Well, did you ever stop to consider what a red light is, what it means?”

“Certainly,” I replied. “It’s a stop signal and means that traffic is rolling in the opposite direction.”

“Half-right,” said the driver, “but incomplete. It’s only an automatic(自动的) stop signal. And it does not mean that there is cross traffic. Did you see any cross traffic during our trip? Of course not. I slowed down at the light, looked carefully to the right and to the left. Not another car on the street at this hour. Well, then! What would you have me do? Should I stop like a stupid animal because an automatic, brainless machine turns red every forty seconds? No, sir,” he shouted. “I am a man, not a machine. I have eyes and a brain and judgment, given me by God. Ashamed of myself, you say? I would only be ashamed of myself if I let those blinking lamps do my thinking for me. Good night, sir.”

Is this bad, is this good? Frankly I no longer am sure..

After a long period of studies, scientists are uncovering surprising new finding about dolphins (海豚). They believe that dolphins do “talk” to each other, whistling “names” among themselves and others in their group. They help one another when in trouble. Like bats, they use sound waves to “see”. Because of these and other findings, many scientists now place dolphins among the cleverest animals on earth.

Dolphins love to mimic (模仿). If we swim on our backs, they do too. If we dive, they follow. Once a trainer blew a puff of (一口) cigarette smoke against the window of an observation tank, a young dolphin swam to its mother, nursed a moment, and spit out a cloud of milk against the glass.

It is even more surprising that dolphins are able to understand sign language. One of Herman’s dolphins has mastered more than 50 sign words. And they can also mimic the signatures of others. Now scientists are learning how dolphins “speak” to each other.

Dolphins help one another. When birth-giving takes place, females gather to keep off sharks. Later, while the mother looks for food, they take care of the young dolphin, swimming in a circle.

Dolphins reach out to us in astonishing ways. What would the world be like without them?

66. Which do you think is more reasonable?

C.    Man will be able to talk freely to dolphins in the near future.

D. Sign language is the only way to make dolphins understand us.

Dear Editor:

While a new school term is about to begin, perhaps we should reconsider the matter of examinations. In July, tow writers(letters to the editor) praised the cancellation(取消)of exams because they believe “Tests don’t tell the whole story”.

As a teacher who has worked in four countries, I have had the experience that a student who earns good marks is generally a good student, and a student’s final mark in a subject is usually a grade average of the year’s work. Of course there are expectations, but they do not have the frequency that would give an unfair picture of a student’s ability.

The simple fact is that proper class work; diligent exam studies and good marks are almost certain indicators (指示) of a student’s future performance. The opposite is, almost certainly, incompetence.

There is no acceptable substitute for competition of quality. How can teachers and future officials determine what a student has learned and remembered? Should we simply take the student’s mark for it? Any institution that “liberates” students from fair and formal exams is misguided, if not ignorant (无知的) and surely the “graduates ” of such institutions will lack trustworthiness(信赖), not to mention being rejected by foreign universities for graduate or other studies.

When all is said and done, I sense that a fear of failure and a fear of unpleasant comparison() with others are at the bottom of most ban-exam talks. Excellence and quality fear nothing. On the contrary, they seek competition and desire the satisfaction of being the best.

67. According to the letter, a student’s final mark ____________ .

A. is often encouraging B. often tells whether he likes the object or not

C. often prove unreliable D. often gives a fair picture of the year’s work

68. The two writers mentioned in the first paragraph____________ .

A.    seemed to be worried about the poor marks of their students

B.    must have proposed other ways of testing students

C.    opposed judging students by the results of exams

D. regarded exams as a way of punishing students

69. Which of the following will be the author of this passage probably agree with?

  1. Tests are an effective measure of the students’ abilities.
  2. Tests are not effective in measuring the students’ abilities.
  3. Tests can only measure some of the students’ abilities.
  4. Tests may not be useful for measuring students’ abilities

70. If a student graduated from a university which does not require exams, he would________ .

  1. have to continue his studies
  2. not be admitted by foreign institutions
  3. be incompetent
  4. have a feeling of failure

71. According to the writer of the letter, those who oppose exams __________ .

A. are incompetent teachers B. fear failure

C. have no confident in competition D. both B and C

There are two basic ways to see growth; one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external(外在的)result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language——all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.

By contrast(对照), the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but the rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they meet with new experience and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.

In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more changes and to be more open to unfamiliar experience. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we are slow to adapt to(适应)change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge? Then we are likely to take a more passive rule or not try at all.

These feelings of insecurity(不安全)and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not face and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.

72. In the author’s eyes, one who views personal growth as a process would_________.

A.    succeed in climbing up the social ladder

B.    judge his ability to grow from his own achievements

C.    face difficulties and take up challenges

D. aim high and reach his goal each time

73. Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growth?

A.    Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges.

B.    Little Tom won the first prize in the Speech Contest.

C.    Mary picked up French while she was in Paris.

D. Father’s salary rose from $ 2,000 to $ 3,000

74. For personal growth, the author advocate(提倡)all of the following except __________ .

A.    curiosity about more changes

B.    quickness in self-adaptation

C.    open-mindedness to new experience

D. avoidance of internal fears and doubts

75. The best title for this passage should be _______________.

A. Encountering New Challenges B. Growth——Product or Produce

C. Unavoidable Feeling of Self-doubt D. Overcoming Internal Fears

参考范文:

Near-sightedness is a serious problem among the youth of our country. Some 65 to 70 percent of young people are near-sightedness that is caused by undue emphasis on success in entrance examinations and long hours of homework. Another obvious reason is that children watch too much television, often sitting right in front of the TV set for hours without rest.

I have some suggestions for solving this problem. Parents should regulate their children’s television viewing. We must keep a proper distance when watching TV or reading, and we must not read in too dim or bright light. We should take breaks during study periods to rest our eyes. Also, regular medical checkups can reveal problems before they become serious.
