An “apple - polisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a bribe, but is close to it.
“Apple - polishing” is as old as human society, but the phrase itself is recent, about 50 years old. It comes from the schoolroom. For a long time, some schoolboys would leave a shiny apple on the teacher’s desk. They would rub and polish the apple to give it a bright shine, so as to make it look more tasty.
Such a gift, the student hoped, might make the teacher shut her eyes to his poor work and give him a good mark.
All sorts of people are apple – polishers, including politicians and people in high offices – almost everybody.
There are other phrases meaning the same thing as “apple – polishing” — “soft – soaping” or “buttering – up”. A gift is just one way to “soft soap” somebody, or to “butter him up”. Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise – telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how wise he is. Flattery, of course, is the cheapest kind of “apple – polishing ”. To flatter another costs you nothing and you can give it as freely as you want. And you can always find somebody eagerly looking for it.

Immediately after the announcement was made by Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC central committee, artists from all over the world staged a show for the TV audience and those who had gathered in the Beijing Workers’ Indoor Arena, for the announcement.
“One World, One Dream’ expresses the wisdom of hundreds of thousands of people,” Liu Qi, president of the Beijing organizing Committee for the Games of XXIX Olympiad, said in his address.

Said IOC President Jacques Rogge in a letter to the BOCOG on hearing the slogan: “The Olympic Games are unique in their ability to attract the world’s attention, using sport to promote peace and understanding.”
“The IOC is delighted that BOCOG’s slogan for the 2008 Olympic Games has captured that Olympic spirit.”

Solar energy for your home is coming. It can help you as a single home owner. It can help the whole country as well. Whether or not solar energy can save your money depends on many things. Where you live is one factor and the type of home you have is another. Things like insulation(绝缘材料), present energy costs, and the type of system you buy are added factors.
Using solar energy can help save our precious fuel. As you know, our supplies of oil and gas are very limited. There is just not enough on hand to meet all our future energy needs. Sooner or later Mother Nature will say that’s all. The only way we can delay hearing those words is by starting to save energy now and by using other sources, like the sun.
We won’t have to worry about the sun’s running out of energy for another several billion years or so. Besides, the sun doesn’t offer as many problems as other energy sources. For example, fossil fuel adds to already high pollution levels. With solar energy, we will still need sources of energy, but we won’t need as much. That means we can cut down on our pollution problems.
With all these good points, why don’t we use more solar power? There are many reasons for this. The biggest reason is money. Until now, it was just not practical for a home owner to put in a solar unit. There were cheaper sources of energy.
All that is changing now. Solar costs are starting to equal the costs of oil and electricity. Experts say that gas, oil and electricity prices will continue to rise. The demand for electricity is increasing rapidly. But new power plants will use more gas, oil or coal. Already in some places the supply of electricity is being rationed(限量供应). Solar energy is now in its infancy(初期). It could soon grow to become a major part of our nation’s energy supply.
49.What’s this passage mainly about?
A.Solar energy and its pollution. B.Using solar energy.

D.It costs more to use solar energy now.
52.Solar energy is now in its infancy, .
A.but in the future it will become popular B.so we will build more power plants

D
For many years, I was convinced that my suffering was due to my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it.
Many weight – conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our worst mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cherished. We dream about what it will be like when we reach the long – awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.
But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally fulfill its promise of everlasting happiness, self – worth, and, of course, love.
It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards vary with culture. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, of it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us try hard to change our body, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.
53.The passage tries to highlight the importance of .
A.body size B.attitude towards life
C.culture difference D.different beauty standards
54.What does the word “everything” in paragraph mean?
A.All the problems. B.All the properties.
C.The whole world. D.The absolute truth.
55.What can be inferred about the author?
A.The author is a Samoan.
B.The author succeeded in losing weight.
C.The author has been troubled by his or her weight.
D.The author probably got wounded in wars or accidents.
56.According to the author, what is the common view of those who have lost some weight first and
gained it back later?
A.They feel angry about the regained weight.
B.They pay little attention to the regained weight.
C.They feel optimistic about future plans on weight control.
D.They think they should give up their future plans on weight control.

Everyone chases success, but not all of us want to be famous.
South African writer John Maxwell Coetzee is well – known for keeping to himself . When the 63 – year – old was named the 2003 Nobel Prize winner for literature, reporters were warned that they would find him “particularly difficult to catch.”
Coetzee lives in Australia but spends part of the year teaching at the Universtiy of Chicago. He seemed shocked by the news that he won the US $ 1.3 million prize. “ I wasn’t even aware they were due to make the announcement,” he said.
His love of privacy leads to doubts as to whether Coetzee will attend the prize – giving in Stockholm, Sweden, on December 10.
But despite being described as difficult to track down, the critics agree that his writing is easy to get to know.
Born in Cape Town, South Africa, to an English – speaking family, Coetzee made his breakthrouth in 1980 with the novel “Waiting for the Barbarians” He took his place among the world’s leading writers with two Booker prize victories, Britain’s highest honour for novels. He first won in 1983 for the “Life and Times of Michael K”, and this second title came in 1999 for “Disgrace.”
A major theme in his work is South Africa’s former apartheid(种族隔离)system, which divided whites from blacks. Dealing with the problems of violence, crime and racial division that still exist in the country, his books have enabled ordinary people to understand apartheid from within.
“I have always been more interested in the past that the future,” he said in a rare interview. “The past casts its shadow over the present. I hope I have made one or two people think twice about whether they want to forget the past completely.”
In fact this purity in his writing seems to be mirrored in his personal life. Coetzee is vegetarian, a cyclist rather than a motorist and doesn’t drink alcohol.
But what he has contributed to literature, culture and the people of South Afica is far greater than the things he has given up. “In looking at weakness and failure in life,” the Noble Prize judging panel said, “Coetzee’s work expresses the divine(非凡的)spark in man.”

Why we go to university?
Some think that a university education will make us more competitive for job hunting and therefore it will be easier to find a well – paid job. Others think that we can get more knowledge in universities.
Personally. I think going to university will certainly broaden my horizon and improve my personality by working with people from different places. I will learn to be more independent and confident while staying away from my parents. Besides universities provied good chances to accumulate social experience and develop communicating ability, which will help to lay a foundation for my future work. What I believe is that the higher quality we have, the greater contribution we can do to our motherland.
