Let Them Watch It

One hot night, when our new baby wouldn’t sleep, I tried everything I could think of: a warm bottle, songs, gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me, I brought a portable (手提的) TV into his room, figuring that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill off the hours until dawn. To my surprise, as soon as the TV lit up, the baby quieted right down, his little eyes focused brightly on the screen. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed out of the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi’s forty-fifth birthday.

My wife and I heard no more of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV himself.

I found in my baby’s behaviour a metaphor(暗喻) for the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine, but he merely spit upon them. When we read to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don’t read and they look down upon reading and scold those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watching TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: “Let them watch it!” If television is that much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight it? Let them watch all they want!”

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.

Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.

E-mail makes it easier to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my younger daughter than I might have if she’d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun—see a great movie perhaps—and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends who you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t take the place of any of the old ways.

Stage fright disconcerts(使困窘) even the most experienced performers whether they be professional or not. The minute they open their mouths, they begin to tremble, they forget their lines or act, and their performance is beset(困挠) by an aura of misery(痛苦). If the Food and Drug Administration gives its approval, a new drug is going to be provided for the cure of stage fright.

Propranolol is a drug used in the treatment of hypertension(过度紧张). Recent studies indicate that the drug relieves the anxiety of performers. An experiment with students at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and at the University of Nebraska was conducted. After taking propranolol, subjects gave solo performances during which their hearts were monitored by an electrocardiograph(心电图). Afterward, their blood pressure was taken. Not only were the symptoms of stage fright improved, but also their heart rates were relatively normal and their critics pleased by their performances.

However beneficial propranolol may appear, it must nevertheless be employed properly. Used to control high blood pressure and angina(心绞痛) and to help prevent heart attacks, the drug is dangerous for sufferers of asthma(气喘病), hay fever, and various types of diabetes(糖尿病) and heart conditions. The drug cannot be rashly marketed. Cautious care must be taken to limit its sale.

Have you heard the one about the traveling saleswoman? It’s not a joke, but a fact that growing numbers of fast-talking, hard-driving women are breaking into the male domain(领域) of corporate sales, working the territory, living out of suitcases, riding like Willy Loman on a smile and a shoeshine.

Selling has always been a women’s game, of course. Behind the nation’s retail sales counters, seven out of every ten clerks are women. Women also predominate in the ranks of real-estate agents(房地产代理商). Yet it is only in recent years that women have begun to land the more profitable jobs in the sales forces of business and industry, where they are selling steel, farm equipment, lumber, medicine, electronic equipment and other products not found in the Avon Lady’s carrying case.

“For me, sales is the fastest, most efficient way of being well paid for the effort I put out,” said 32-year-old Joyce Walker, who spends roughly eight in every 10 working days away from her New York apartment and on the road selling advertising space.

Miss Walker travels in style, dining only in the better restaurants, staying only in the better hotels. On checking in, she sprays the room with Ciara, her favorite perfume, and orders fresh flowers.

So much for charm. Life as a traveling saleswoman may also mean arriving at small airports at 2 AM with a 100-pound sample case and no porter in sight. It may mean driving 300 miles a day and lunching on a hamburger and coffee from a tray on the car seat. It may mean listening to vulgar jokes at sales meetings, getting the restaurant table next to the kitchen, getting the motel room next to the ice machine.

What makes some women put up with such things?

The answer: Money!

77. According to the passage, women have recently begun selling all of the following products except_______

A.     houses

B.     farm equipment

C.     advertising

D. electronic equipment

78. One may infer from the selection that a traveling saleswoman _______.

A.     visits her family a great deal

B.     frequently sees the best plays and movies on Broadway

C.     often faces unpleasant working conditions

D. leads a very social life in her daily work

79. Sales are usually_______.

A.     dull and meaningless

B.     tiresome

C.     very pleasant

D. hard but profitable

80. What is the possible title for the passage?

A.     On traveling saleswoman

B.     Saleswomen can make more money

C.     Women are more capable than men

D. Money makes women work hard
