第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A graded reader is a book containing simplified languages used to help learners master the language. Readers come in different levels, from beginners to advanced. English learners need to choose a reader that is suitable for their level.

Why use readers? Lots of research shows that extensive(广泛的) reading improves all aspects of language learning, including vocabulary, speaking skills, fluency(流利), writing skills and reading comprehension.

Reading is a way of learning English without classes or a teacher. It helps develop learner independence. And while reading graded readers, learners don’t have to run to a dictionary because the language is at their level.

How do I get started? The entire class can read the same book or different books at different times.

How do I know the right level? If your class is all reading the same book, choose one that is appropriate for their level. If your students are reading different books, you can have a selection of books at different levels. In this case, don’t worry too much about the level. A learner who is interested in detective stories might read a higher level book if the motivation(动机) is there.

How to read the book depends on students” age, motivation and class time available. Some classes like to read silently, others like to read aloud in small groups and some enjoy being read to by the teacher. Be sensitive to the class and ask for their opinions.

Some pre-reading activities are needed. Before students open a book, it is important to spark interest in the story and in the whole process of reading. For example, ask them to guess what the story is from cover, chapter titles and let students put them in the best order, or discuss the author.

During reading, choose a suitable chapter or chapters that can be broken down to make a comic strip(连环漫画). Or students select a part of the book to make into a radio play. Many people hurt their backs when they try to lift heavy things from the floor. It is easy to hurt your back muscles when you pick up a heavy object. However, there is a correct way to lift things form the floor. If you pick up big or heavy objects correctly, you probably will not hurt your back.

To lift something from the floor correctly, first bend your knees and squat down. Keep your back straight. Don’t bend over from your waist; keep your back and hips and waist in a line. If you bend over, the muscles in your lower back can become injured very easily. If you keep your back and hips straight, the muscles are stronger, because they have much more support. The other muscles can then help the lower back muscles.

As you squat down, try to get as close to the object as possible. For example, if you are going to pick up a heavy box, squat down directly in front of it; maybe you will have to spread your knees and legs. Put one knee on each side of the box. Remember at all times to keep your back straight.

Put your hands under the object that is in front of you, between your knees. To lift the object, you should stand up slowly. Use your leg muscles in order to stand up. In other words, lift with your legs, not with your back.

Over time, the Declaration of Independence has deeply affected American history. Phrases from the document such as “all men are created equal” quickly took on a life of their own or were applied to groups that the authors never expected. Blacks quickly used this language to challenge slavery in the United States. The ideal of equality led Northern states to free slaves in 1780s, 1790s, and early 1800s. black and white abolitionists(废奴主义者) used the ideal that all men were created equal to attack slavery in the South before the Civil War. And civil rights supporters gathered behind Jefferson’s words in their fight against racism in the 1950s and 1960s. in 1848 the delegates(代表)to the Seneca Falls women’s rights conference proclaimed that “all men and women are created equal”, and the 20th-centruy feminist (女权主义者) did the same.

Other groups have focused on the document’s defence of the right to rebel against an unjust government. The declaration of Independence had a deep effect on the French Revolution; its influence was strong in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, adopted by the National Assembly of France in 1789. in the 19th century the principles of the declaration were adopted by various Latin American movements fighting for independence from European colonial powers. The declaration influences more recent struggles for national identity (身份): Vietnamese Communist Leader HoChi Mink, for example, used the American document as one of the basic principles behind his fight to establish an independent and unified Vietnam.

The document itself continues to be an important symbol for the American people. Today, each page of the Declaration of Independence is protected. Over one million Americans view the document each year in Washington, D,C. , where it is displayed along with the constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.

Magic is believed to have begun with the Egyptians, in 1700BC. A magician named Dedi of Dedsnefu was reported to have performed for the pharaoh, or the king. He was also known to have entertained the slaves who built the pyramids. The “Cups and Balls” trick which he was particularly good at is still performed by magicians all over the world today.

The ancient Greeks and Romans were also fascinated(使着迷) by the idea of magic. Actually, one of their main interests was the art of deception. This explains why at that time the priests (牧师) even built magic devices into their temples. These devices made it possible for doors to open by themselves and wine to flow magically out of statues’ mouths. This was done mainly to convince people that the priests were powerful.

Magic, however, was not well accepted before the 1800s. Magicians were thought of as freaks(非正常人)and were only allowed to perform in a circus. It was in the 19th century that the magician Robert Houdin came along and changed people’s views and attitudes about magic. It was also because of Robert Huoudin that many magicians were able to add Dr. or MD to their names. Today magicians try hard to find new ways to show their practiced skills. Magic is now entertainment for families all over the world.

Dear editor,

Last year I wrote you a letter (published in your paper)about serious pollution in Huaihe River. Our city government paid great attention to it and accepted my suggestions about stopping pollution of the Huaihe River and improve our surroundings. They have closed a chemical works which polluted the Huaihe River most, and moved and rebuilt a paper factory. We are strengthening the protection of nature and the fight (struggle) against pollution. Now birds have returned to both sides of the Huaihe River and people can eat fresh fish from the Huaihe River. We have planted a lot of young trees and are raising flowers to make our surroundings green. A water works has been built recently so that we now drink and use tap water instead of river water. We are living a clean and happy life.
