ABC News anchor (节目主持人) Peter Jennings died on Aug.7, 2005 at home in New York after a brief battle with lung cancer. ABC News anchors said they hope if anything good can be taken from Jennings’ death, it is a great awareness of the dangers of smoking.

“I want to give a message,” Barbara Walters said. “If you have kids who are smoking, tell them that we lost Peter.”

Lung cancer is the worst killer in America, taking more lives each year than any other cancer, according to the America Cancer Society. About 160,440 Americans die each year of cancer, making up 28 percent of all cancer deaths. More than 87 percent of lung cancers are smoking related.

Dr. Derek Raghavan, director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Taussing Cancer Center, said that once a person stops smoking, he starts getting better. Three to five years after quitting, the possibility of getting lung cancer is reduced by half.

Warning signs of lung cancer can also be mixed with symptoms connected with long-term smoking. The three main warning signs are an increase of coughing that doesn’t clear up, coughing up blood and sharp chest pains.

People with those symptoms should see a doctor. Raghavan said there have been promising developments in the treatment of lung cancer, including uses of radiation and surgery and drugs. “But the fact is that stopping smoking is the most important thing we can do,” Raghavan said. “There is no treatment that even comes close.”

Comets(彗星)orbiting a distant star have been found to contain water, the first time the ingredient(成份) considered key to life has been discovered in objects circling a star other than our sun.

The discovery, announced by scientists, adds weight to the theory that other planetary(行星的)systems may be necessary to the formation of life as we know it.

Scientists have no way of knowing whether life ever existed on any comets or planets orbiting this particular star, known as CW Leonis and located some 3,000 trillion miles (4,800 trillion kilometers) from Earth in the constellation Leo(狮子座).

But they are certain that no life could exist there now. That is because as it burns out the last of its nuclear fuel, the star has swelled(膨胀) and increased in luminosity(发光度), engulfing(吞没) nearby objects and melting comets in orbits as distant as Neptune is from the sun—releasing the water that astronomers spotted using a radio telescope in out space.

“ The existence of these bodies is measured through their destruction(毁灭)” said Gary Melnick, chief scientist on the project and an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Mr. Melnick said the discovery was of particular importance because if there was a reservoir of water farther from the star, there could have been water closer to the star, bolstering the ideas that life may have existed outside our solar system. Comets are believed to have helped build life on Earth, Mr. Melnick and other scientists said. Besides bringing water to the oceans, they are also thought to have transported important chemicals as they went through Earth’s atmosphere in past eons(远古时代).

“Comets are some of the smaller bodies in the solar system and form the seeds of planets themselves,” said Saavik Ford, a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University who first suggested that the water may have come from evaporating(蒸发的) comets. “The fact that we found water is interesting because it is necessary for the formation of life.

60. According to the passage which of the following statements is NOT true?

   B. There couldn’t be life on Earth without comets orbiting a distant star.

   C. The earth probably came into being from a comet.

   D. Scientists are trying to find water on CW Leonis.

For those who have lonely nights and have trouble falling asleep, he is proving the ideal partner. This is a man who does not snore (打鼾) in bed. And he is happy to wrap a comforting arm around his dearest until morning arrives.

He does exist. He is the body-shaped pillow, the latest sleeping aid from Japan.

This pillow comes without a head and is filled with foam. It’s made by Kameo and has a “body” and a flexible arm that can be curled around its owner.

About 1,000 of the pillows have been sold since they went on sale in Japan last year and many buyers say they are pleased with their sleeping companion.

“This pillow makes me feel relaxed because I can hold the arm and feel something warm at my side,” said 34-year-old radio DJ Junko Suzuki.

But according to Kameo, the pillow is more than just an emotional help for those tired of spending the night alone. And it is shaped, the firm says, to support its partner on both sides to ensure a night of good sleep.

The idea is to curl up in between the body and the flexible arm. The head just rests on the pillow’s “arm muscles”.

“My grandmother used to say that there is no more comfortable pillow than another person,” said the firm president, Tomoki Kakehashi. “So I thought that maybe people would want to sleep on a pillow shaped like an arm.”

For many years, I was convinced(使相信) that my suffering was due to my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it.

Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our worst mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cherished. We fantasize about what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.

But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally fulfill its promise of everlasting happiness, self-worth, and, of course, love.

It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards vary with culture. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us strive hard to change our body, but in vain(徒劳地). We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.

68. The passage tries to highlight(强调) the importance of _____.

   A. body size B. attitudes toward life

   C. culture difference D. different beauty standards

   A. The author is a Samoan.

   B. The author succeeded in losing weight.

   C. The author has been troubled by her /his weight.

   and gained it back later?

   A. They feel angry about the regained weight.

   B. They pay little attention to the regained weight.

   C. They feel optimistic about future plans on weight control.

New Year traditions all around the world

“Happy New Year!” Everyone will greet each other with these words as they meet each other over the next couple of weeks. But it wasn’t always January 1 that marked the New Year.

At least 4,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians marked the changing of the year. In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River flooded, enriching farmers’ fields. This happened at the end of September.

The Babylonians held a festival in the spring, on March 23, to kick off the next farming cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days.

The date January 1 was picked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 46 BC. The month of January originates from the Roman god, Janus. He is pictured with two heads. One head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new. The new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day.

In Vietnam, the New Year holiday happens in February. They buy fresh flowers and a peach blossom to put in their house, following the Vietnamese custom.

第二节:

One possible version:

Li Hua is a primary school student and he enjoys drawing very much.

One day, he went to the small woods not far from town to draw from nature, carrying a drawing board. He was glad to find a tree living although the rest had been cut down. “Let me start work at once,” he thought and began to set up his board.

Just then a strong young man came with a big axe and got down to cutting the tree. Soon he cut it down and pulled it away.

When Li Hua got ready and turned back to draw, he found the tree had disappeared.

“Dear me! Where on earth is the tree?” Li Hua wondered, very disappointedly.

M: Could you please tell me when Mr. Bill comes to the office?

W: Not really, but there’s a sign of his working time on the door I think.

Text 2

M: Terry, how do you contact your friends abroad nowadays?

W: By e-mail. What about you?

M: Over the phone. But sometimes I write letters.

W: Me too.

Text 3

M: I wish I had studied harder when I was in the university.

W: You always said you didn’t think study was that important.

M: Yes, I know, but now I realize I was wrong and it’s too late.

M: Oh, we still haven’t decided what to get him.

W: I know. It’s hard. What does he need?

M: Well, darling, the other day he said that he needed a car.

W: Yeah, right. Well, I think that's a little beyond us.

M: Yeah, it'd be fun, but it's just a little too expensive.

W: There's the usual kind of thing, like a wallet or a tie.

M: Oh, please, not for his sixtieth. I think we should get him something more expensive than that, don't you? I mean, we want to get something good, something...

W: Something unusual.

M: Yeah.

W: Well, how about a computer? We could get him a computer. That way we could keep in touch on e-mail.

M: No, no, no. You know him. He says he's too old to learn how to use a computer. He isn't, of course, but I don't think he'd ever use it.

W: Yes, but…

M: I even gave you a card with the name and phone number of the restaurant!

W: But that’s just it! You didn’t give me the card.

M: What do you mean? Of course I did. I took the card out of my wallet just before I left. Look! It isn’t in my wallet now!

W: Mr. Smith, what’s that card on the floor? It fell out of your wallet a second ago.

M: That card? It’s…er…it’s the card I thought I gave you.

W: You see! You forgot! That’s why I didn’t phone.

M: I’m very sorry. It wasn’t your fault. I apologize.

W: That’s all right. Please forget it.

W: Let’s go in here and order some coffee while we look at your pictures.

M: Good idea. We both like coffee. OK, here is one of Bill, my roommate. I took this

picture right after we arrived at school this fall. We had just met in fact. And this was our room in the dorm while we were unpacking all of our things. What a mess!

W: You certainly had a lot of boxes. How did you ever find room for everything?

M: In the beginning we thought we’d never get it all arranged. But now we’re very comfortable.Lucky for me, Bill gets his things neat.

W: Do you like living in the dorm?

M: It’s not bad. Sometimes Bill turns his radio up too loud and makes too much noise. Then I get angry. Sometimes I leave my books and clothes lying a round and he gets angry. But usually we get along. Here is a picture of him taken when we went to visit my family during vacation.

W: And this last one?

M: That’s my dog Alexander.

Text 10

Dear Mr. Hu,

My name is Alex Clark, a boy of 18. I know that Sherri has talked to you about my coming to your school to teach English. I have discussed this opportunity with my parents and have told the university where I would study upon returning to the United States. If possible, I would like to teach the ninth grade and help teach chemistry in English. I will have completed two years of college-level Chinese by the time I arrive. I will soon finish my third year of chemistry in high school and I am at the very top of my class. I would like to be able to live with a Chinese family.

Please write to me if you have any questions or concerns.

                                                     Best regards,

                                                        Alex Clark
