A severely handicapped teenager who cannot walk, talk or hold a paintbrush has won a place at Oxford to study fine art.

Hero Joy Nightingale, 16, who communicates through hand movements, is to be given assistants to paint and sculpt (雕塑) in place of her. Her mother Pauline Reid ‘translated’ for her daughter during interviews for the place at Magdalen College.

The teenager is the most severely handicapped student ever to be given a place at Oxford. She suffers from a terrible disease caused by brain damage that makes her unable to speak and her body useless.

She is unlikely ever to be able to walk, feed or care for herself but, thanks to the efforts of her mother, she can communicate. When Hero was four, Pauline designed a system of hand gestures that is equal to the alphabet(字母表).

By dictating to her mother, Hero has created an internet magazine, From the Window, which contains articles by George Carey, Melvyn Bragg, Margaret Atwood and Kofi Annan—all of whom are invited to write for her.

A spokesperson for Oxford said, “The university welcomes applications from students with disabilities. In cases where students are profoundly disabled, there may be many issues(问题) that need to be carefully talked about before an individual can take up a place, such as fixing firmly how the student can best be taught and examined.”

Hero, who suffers almost daily epileptic fits and has a hole in her heart, has not attended school since she was six. She has been taught at home by her mother and father, who work at Kent University.

Peter Giles, her art tutor until last year, said she has a gift for art. “She is ferociously gifted. We would sit together and her mother would grab her daughter’s hand and then we would begin work,” he said.

Together, they built several modern sculptures from plaster and metal. “The instructions would take a while to decipher(解释,解谜). But finally, they would come, and finally make sense.”

Hero’s classes will be held at the Ruskin School Drawing and Fine Art.

60 According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?

A. Oxford University has taken in other handicapped students besides Hero.

B. Hero’s mother is the only person who can understand her fairly well.

C. Hero can not create any art works without her assistants.

D. Only through her hand movements, is Hero able to paint and sculpt.

61. From the passage, we can infer that Hero in Oxford University.

A. will have to take examinations B. can take care of herself well

C. will be taught by the best art teachers D. will not feet happy

62. In the sentence: “But finally, they would come and finally make sense.” the word “they” refers to .

A. the assistants             B. the mother and the assistants

C. Hero’s instructions D. the mother’s instructions

63. Which would be the best title for the passage?

A. Disabled Hero and her Mother

B. Disabled Hero Wins Oxford Place

C. Oxford University Welcome Disabled Students

D. Disabled Students Living in Oxford University

What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?

Professor Jerald Jullion of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Others researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling . This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at; the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way .

Research has also been done into the changes of people’s behavior in a number of small , clearly unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”. They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch(发痒).

Another gesture which gives liars away is that the writer Desmond Morris in his book Man watching calls “the mouth cover”. He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the month. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.

Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the context in which the lie is told.

64.According to the passage , a “white lie” seems to be a lie ___.

A. that other people believe

B. that other people don’t believe

    C. told in order to avoid offending someone

D. told in order to take advantage of someone

65.Research suggests that women ____.

A.are better at telling lies than men do B.generally lie far more than men

C.often make promises they intend to break D.lie to make profit from it

66.Researchers find that when a person tells lies ____.

    A.his blood pressure increases measurably

    B.he looks very serious

C.he tends to make some small changes in his behaviors

    D.he uses his unconscious mind

67.One reason people sometimes rub their noses when they lies is that ____.

A.they wish they were somewhere else

B.the nose is sensitive to physical changes caused by lying

C.they want to cover their mouths

D.they are trying to stop themselves from telling lies

68.Which of the following may best betray(背叛) a liar?

A.The touching of the tip of one’s nose B.The change of one’s behaviors

C. The mouth cover gesture D.The situations in which his lies are told

D

Americans often say that there are only two things a person can be sure of in life: death and taxes. Americans do not have a corner on the “death” market, but many people feel that the United States leads the world with the worst taxes.Taxes are made of the money which people pay to support their government.

There are generally three levels of government in the United States: federal, state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.Salaried people who earn more than four to five thousand dollars per year must pay a certain percentage of their salaries to the federal (national) government. The percentage is different from person to person. It depends on his or her salary. The federal government has a two-level income tax; that is, 15 or 28 percent, $ 17850 is the cutoff. The tax rate is 15 percent below $ 17850 and 28 percent above.

The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, North Dakota, or any of the other forty-seven states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government.Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower.Other states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item which you buy in that state. For example, a person might want to buy a package of gum for twenty-five cents. If there is a sales tax of eight percent in that state, then the cost of the gum is twenty-seven cents.

The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax (residents who own a home have to pay taxes on it) and excise tax, which is connected with vehicles (交通) in a city. The cities use these funds for education, police and fire departments, public works(including street repairs, water and sanitation(卫生) and municipal buildings.Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to pay their taxes.

69.The income tax for $ 20000 paid to the federal government is ____.

    A.$3000 B.$5600 C.$1600 D.$1000

70 .Tax for the state government includes _____.

    A.property tax B.excise tax C.salary tax D.sales tax

71.Which of the following statement is true?

A.America leads the world with a very good tax system.

B.People in some states have to pay income tax to state government as much as to federal government.

C.$17850 is the cutoff for two levels of income tax.

D.Property tax is given on vehicles in a city.

72.What do American feel about their tax?

    A.It is reasonable.

    B.It is acceptable.

C.It takes away 1/5 of their total work.

    D.It is not high.

Insurance is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to risk of some sort. The house owner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the shipowner knows that his vessel may be lost at sea; the breadwinner knows that he may die at an early age and leave his family the poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire nor every vessel lost at sea. If these persons each put a small sum into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer loss. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contributions are known as “the insured”and those who administer the pool of contributions as“insurers”.

Not all risks lead themselves to being covered by insurance. Broadly speaking, the ordinary risks of business and speculation cannot be covered. The risk that buyers will not buy goods at the prices offered is not of a kind that can be statistically estimated(评估)— and risks can only be insured against if they can be so estimated.

The legal basis of all insurance is the“policy”! This is a printed form of contract on paper of the best quality. It states that in return for the regular payment by the insured of a named sum of money, called the “premium”, which is usually paid every year, the insurer will pay a sum of money or compensation for loss, if the risk or event insured against actually happens. The wording of policies, particularly in marine insurance, often seems very old-fashioned, but there is a sound reason for this. Over a large number of years many law cases have been brought to clear up the meanings of doubtful phrases in policies. The law courts, in their judgments, have given these phrases a definite and indisputable meaning, avoid future disputes the phrases have continued to and to be used in policies even when they have passed out of normal use in speech.

73.According to this passage, insurance is possible because      .

A.everyone at some time suffers loss

B.only a small proportion of the insured suffer loss

C.nearly everyone is likely to suffer loss

  D.only insured people suffers loss

74.By“the pool of contributions”the writer means .

   A.money paid by the insured

  B.money paid by the insurers

  C.the cost of administering insurance

  D.the amount of each premium

75.Old-fashioned wording is sometimes used in insurance because .

   A.insurance is old-fashioned

B.insurance has existed for a long time

C.it enables ordinary people to understand it

D.the meaning of such wording has been agreed upon

Super Girls’ Voice

Recently many people especially high school students have been fascinated by a singing competition “ Super Girls’ Voice” , which is held by Hunan TV Station . Last weekend students in our class had a heated discussion about it .

Some students supporting it think highly of the competition . They think it has offered a wonderful stage to ordinary but well-singing girls to show their singing talents in public , and encourages people to pursue their dreams . What’s more , they can also develop their sense of competing during competitions .

On the other hand , the others don’t’ agree with them . They think a series of competitions costs lots of time and money . As most of girls are still students who should concentrate on their study at present , taking part in it is not good for their further progress .

In my opinion ,it is just a successful program , which has attracted lots of audience’s attention . But seeing a bunch of girls with passion try hard to realize their dreams in the competition , we are inspired to study harder to be super girls too , just as competitors .
