第三部分:阅读理解
第一节: 阅读下面短文,然后从A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
How often do you sit still and do absolutely nothing? The usual answer these days is “never”, or “hardly ever”. As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, it is hard to slow down and relax. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life. There is no way to avoid it, since it takes many and varied forms----driving in traffic, problems with personal relationships are all different forms of stress. Stress, in fact, is not the “baddy” it is often considered to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to level(平淡)performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can resist depends very much on the individual. Some people thrive( 茁壮成长) on stress, and such characters are obviously prime materials for managerial responsibilities. Others break down at the sight of unusual difficulties.
When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we use the “fight” mechanism which in more primitive(原始的) days made the difference between life and death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however minimal the stress, it involves the same response(反应). All the energy is diverted (转向) to deal with the stress, with the result that other functions, such as digestion, are neglected(忽略).
It is when such a reaction is prolonged, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure, coronary heart disease all have established links with stress. The way stress affects a person also varies with the individual. Stress in some people produces stomach disorders, while others give in to tension headaches. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives, we need to find ways to deal with it.
56. The reason why many people find it hard to relax these days is that .
A. they are working harder than they used to be
B. they are often too busy to find the time
C. they are suffering from the effects of stress
D. they are not clear of how to relax by themselves
57. We learn from the passage that .
A. how much stress one can bear depends greatly on whether he knows the art of relaxation.
B. people in primitive days survived from stress because they found certain mechanism to deal with it
C. if one gets into the habit of relaxing every day he can overcome stress easily
D. stress can lead to serious health problems if one is exposed to it for too long
58. The pronoun “it” at the end of the passage refers to .
A. ill health B. reaction C. exposure D. stress
59. What is the writer’s attitude to stress according to the passage?
A. Stress as well as relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body
B. Stress produces both positive and negative effects to people.
C. Stress should not be removed completely from the life.
D. People usually work better under stress if they are healthy.
B
Insurance is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to risk of some sort. The house-owner, for example, knows that his possessions can be damaged by fire; the ship-owner knows that his vessel may be lost at sea; the breadwinner(养家糊口的人) knows that he may die at an early age and leave his family poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire, nor every vessel lost at sea. If these persons each put a small sum into a pool, there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer loss. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who pay the contribution(分担额) are known as “insured” and those who administer(管理) the pool of contributions as “insurers”.
Not all risks lend themselves to being covered by insurance. Broadly speaking, the ordinary risks of business and speculation cannot be covered. The risk that buyers will not buy goods at the prices offered is not of a kind that can be statistically calculated---- and risks can only be insured against if they can be so estimated.
The legal basis of all insurance is the “policy(保单)”. This is the printed form of contract on paper of the best quality. It states that in return for the regular payment by the insured of a named sum of money, called the “premium(保险费)”, which is usually paid every year, the insurer will pay a sum of money or compensation for loss, if the risk or event insured against actually happens. The wording of policies, particularly in marine insurance, often seems very old-fashioned, but there is a sound reason for this. Over a large number of years many law cases have been brought to clear up the meaning of doubtful phrases in policies. The law courts, in their judgments, have given these phrases a definite and indisputable(明白的) meaning, and to avoid future arguments the phrases have continued to be used in policies even when they have passed out of normal use in speech.
60. By “the pool of contributions” the writer means .
A. money paid by the insured B. money paid by the insurers
C. the cost of administering insurance D. the amount of administering insurance
61. The insurance of ordinary business risks is not possible because .
A. business will not buy insurance B. the risks are too high
C. the risks can not be estimated D. the premiums would be too high
62. Old-fashioned wording is sometimes used in insurance policies because .
A. insurance is old-fashioned
B. insurance has existed for a long time
C. it enables ordinary people to understand it
D. the meaning of such wording has been agreed upon
63. The writer of this passage seems to think that insurance is .
A. a form of gambling (赌博) B. a way of making money quickly
C. old-fashioned D. useful and necessary
C
Scientists find that having no language, infants cannot be told what they need to learn. Yet by the age of three they will have mastered the basic structure of their native language and will be well on their way communicative competence. Acquiring(获得) their language is a most impressive intellectual(智力的) feat. Studies of how children learn language generally agree that the most remarkable aspect of this feat is the rapid acquisition of grammar. Nevertheless, the ability of children to keep to grammatical rules is only slightly wonderful than their ability to learn words. It has been considered that the average high school graduate in the United States has a reading vocabulary of 80,000 words, which includes idiomatic expressions and proper names of people and places. This vocabulary must have been learned over period of 16 years. From the figures, it can be calculated that the average child learns at a rate of about 13 new words per day. Clearly the learning process of great complexity( 复杂性) goes on at a rapid rate in children.
Scientists also find that watch a baby between six and nine months old, and you will observe the basic concepts of geometry(几何) being learned. Once the baby has mastered the idea that space is three-dimensional(三维的), it reaches out and begins grasping various kind of objects. It is then, from perhaps nine to fifteen months, that the concept of sets and numbers are formed. So far, so good. But now an ominous(恶兆) development takes place. The nerve fibers in the brain protect themselves in such a way that the baby begins to hear sounds very precisely. Soon it picks up language, and it is then brought into direct communication with adults. From this point on, it is usually downhill all the way for mathematics, because the child now becomes exposed to all the nonsense words and beliefs of the community into which it has been so unfortunate as to have been born. Nature, having done very well by the child to this point, having permitted it the luxury(豪华) of thinking for itself for eighteen months, now abandons it to the arbitrary(主观) practices and beliefs of society. But at least the child knows something of geometry and number, and it will always keep some memory of the early calm days, no matter what rise and fall it may suffer later on. The main reservoir of mathematical talent in any society is thus possessed by children who are about two years old, children who have just learned to speak fluently.
64. What is the main subject of the first paragraph?
A. Language acquisition in children. B. Teaching languages to children
C. How to memorize words D. Communicating with infants.
65. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word “feat” (line 4, para. 1)
A. Experiment B. Idea C. Activity D. Achievement
66. According to the passage, which of the following activities would teach a baby about geometry?
A. picking up a wooden block. B. recognizing the number.
C. uttering(说) a nonsense word. D. looking at distant objects.
67. The passage supports which of the following conclusions?
A. The language concepts used in early education interfere with(妨碍) mathematical reasoning.
B. It is hopeless to try to teach children mathematics after the age of two.
C. Language teaching should cooperate some mathematical formulas (公式).
D. Preschool education should stress society’s beliefs and practices.
D.
Break Your Bad Mood
Having one of those days or weeks----when everything seems to annoy you? Even of you do nothing about it, your bad mood will probably go away after some time. But with a little effort, you can forget it much faster--- often within a day or two.

One reason for being in a bad mood is feeling you have no options. By taking control over certain areas, you realize you’re not helpless. You can make changes in your mood and life.
Avoid things that won’t improve your mood

Today’s teen consumer market is the most profitable it has ever been. Even though 65% of teens claim(声称) that they rely on themselves for their fashion ideas, it is calculated that less than 20% of the teen population is innovative( 革新的) enough to drive fashion trends, according to a recent study by a marketing firm. Marketers recognize this fact and often use elements of youth culture to promote their products. Perhaps one of the best examples is their use of hip-hop culture. It is reported that hip-hop fashion alone produces $750 million to $1 billion annually. Sales of rap music and videos each exceed that amount.
Rap’s rise and sustained(维持) global popularity is a good example of how influential youth culture is on youth attitudes and behavior. Remember when Madonna hit the charts with her bra(乳罩) in full view while singing about “virginity”? Soon after that, adolescent girls around the world began wearing their underwear outside their clothes.
Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger was fully aware of the power of youth culture. He marketed his brand by giving clothes to famous MTV stars and featuring teen stars in his print ads. Picking up on teens’ interest in computer games, Hilfiger sponsored(倡议) a Nintendo competition and fixed Nintendo terminals(终端机) in his stores. The payoff? Teens rated Hilfiger jeans as their number one brand in a survey in 2000.
72. What is the best title for this passage?
A。The Importance of Marketing
B. The Power of Youth Culture
C. The Popularity of Hip-hop Fashion
D. The Success of Tommy Hilfiger
73. How much money do sales of rap music and videos together make each year?
A. More than $I billion
B. Between $750 million and $1 billion
C. Between $500 million and $750 million
D. Less than $500 million
74. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A. The purchasing power of teenagers has been decreasing over the years.
B. Many teenagers make a lot of profits in the fashion market today.
C. Madonna led the fashion of wearing underwear outside clothes.
D. Marketers recognize youth culture as a part of hip-hop culture.
75. It can be inferred from the passage that Hilfiger _________
A. believed that MTV stars could drive fashion trends among teens
B. sold Nintendo terminals together with teen’s clothes in his stores
C. sponsored a Nintendo competition out of his own interest in computer games
D. was rated by teens and adults as the best designer of jeans around the world in 2000

One possible version:
In front of a shop, there was a long line of bicycles. The parking attendant was busy receiving and seeing his customers off when a thief got a chance to steal a bicycle. The thief unlocked the bicycle, got on it and rode away. Seeing that, the attendant shouted to passers-by for help. But unfortunately nobody reacted. Disappointed and helpless, the attendant watched the thief disappear. Of course he had to pay the owner of the stolen bicycle 400 yuan as compensation.
In my opinion, the passers-by should be to blame, for they could have helped the attendant. As members of society, everyone should do something to keep public safety.
