Early one morning, more than a hundred years ago, an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the thread to run smoothly around the needle. Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the center of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practical sewing machine.
Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.
To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(无意识的), but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves”.

A. he also tried to invent a sewing machine
B. he got some of his ideas from dreams
C. he was one of Howe’s best friends
D. he also had difficulty in falling asleep
59.Dreams are sometimes called“secret messages to ourselves” because ________.
A. strange images are used to communicate ideas
B. images which have no meaning are used
C. we can never understand the real meaning
D. only specially trained people can understand them

“The pen is more powerful than the sword(刀).” There have been many writers who used their pens to fight things that were wrong. Mrs Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of them.
She was born in the U.S.A. in 1811.One of her books not only made her famous but has been described as one that excited the world, and was helpful in causing a civil war and freeing the enslaved race. The civil war was the American Civil War of 1861, in which the Northern States fought the Southern States and finally won.
This book that shook the world was called Uncle Tom's Cabin. There was time when every English-speaking man, woman, and child has read this novel that did so much to stop slavery. Not many people read it today, but it is still very interesting. The book has shown us how a warm-hearted writer can arouse (唤起) people's sympathies. The author herself had neither been to the Southern States nor been a slave. The Southern Americans were very angry at the book, which they said did not at all represent true state of affairs, but the Northern Americans were wildly excited over it and were so inspired by it that they were ready to go to war to set the slaves free.

B. She disclosed the terrible wrongs that had been done to the slaves in the Southern States.

D. The book had been read by many Americans.
63.What can we learn from the passage?
A. We needn't use weapons (武器) to fight things that are wrong.
B. A writer is more helpful in a war than a soldier.
C. We must understand the importance of literature and art.

A lot of us lose life’s tough battles by starting a frontal(正面的) attack—when a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum(最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for Sam’s a being late—serious illness at home—he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn’t work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.
Yes, the boss was, Sam entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room(更衣室); everyone was hard at work. Sam’s supervisor came up to him. Suddenly, Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand. “How do you do!” he said. “I’m Sam Maynard. I’m applying for a job. Which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Does the early bird get the worm?”
The room exploded in laughter while the supervisor clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Sam Maynard had saved his job—with the only tool that could win, a laugh.
Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected(忽略), means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”, criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians(喜剧演员) on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance(忍受力) than people in any other forum.
67. Why was Sam late for his job?
A. Because he was ill.
B. Because he got up late.
C. Because he was caught in a traffic jam.
D. He was busy applying for a new job.
68. The main idea of this passage is ________.
A. Sam Maynard saved his job with humor
B. humor is important in our lives
C. early bird gets the worm
D. humor can solve racial discriminations
69. The phrase “clamped off” in Paragraph 3 means ________.
A. tried to hold back B. tried to set off C. charged D. gave out
70. Which of the following statements can we infer from the passage?
A. Many lose life’s battles for they are lacking in a sense of humor.
B. It wasn’t the first time that Sam came late for his work.
C. Sam was supposed to come to his office at 8:30.
D. Humor is the most effective way of solving problems.

THIS month saw the start of a cross-cultural programme bringing Britain and China closer together. |
With the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, on a week-long tour of China from April 9 to April 14, there was plenty of time for greater ties to be forged. |
With the Olympic torch set to pass from Beijing in 2008 to London in 2012, the two capitals are more strongly linked than ever. The mayors of both cities signed an agreement on April 10 to encourage further co-operation on everything from tourism and culture to education and business. |
But things didn't stop in Beijing. Livingstone's trip also took him to Shanghai, where he signed an agreement with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng to promote ties between their cities. |
But don't think this means that the cities will be just working together on boring business matters. Poetry is part of the package too! |
The Shanghai metro will display poems by four British poets in a groundbreaking cultural exchange between the world's two most popular languages and its oldest and newest subway networks. |
As part of the deal, the London underground is displaying lines in English from some of China's great wordsmiths: Li Bai, Du Fu and Bai Juyi. |
Meanwhile, in China, the Shanghai metro will display extracts in Chinese from William Wordsworth's "Daffodils", Kathleen Jamie's "The Blue Boat", Michael Bullock's "Butterfly", and William Blake's "Auguries of Innocence". |
Blake was also a painter and engraver who illustrated and printed his own books. Misunderstanding shadowed his career as a writer and artist and it was left to later generations to recognize his importance. |

B. meet the committee organising the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

D. promote understanding of each other's culture
73. The statement "But things didn't stop in Beijing" probably means _____.
A. Livingstone visited not only Beijing, but also Shanghai.
B. he signed agreements not only with Beijing, but also with Shanghai.
C. he developed stronger links not only with Beijing, but also with Shanghai
D. All above
74. "Metro" in the third paragraph means "_____".
A. a subway network B. a major city
C. people of a major city D. poets
75. If you were to give another headline to the story, which do you think is the most suitable?

To many people, the word Hollywood has two meanings. Hollywood is an area in Los Angels. Hollywood is also the American movie industry.
Hollywood was just farmland at the beginning of this century. Early American movies were made in other places; for example, in New York and Chicago.
In 1917, a director was making a movie in Chicago. Because of cold weather, he couldn’t finish the movie. He took a trip to southern California, and there he found just the weather and scenery he needed to finish his movie. The director realized that southern California was the perfect place for making movies. The next year his company built a movie studio in Hollywood. Other companies followed. Before long nearly all important American movies studios were in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
The next thirty years were Hollywood’s gjreatest years. Thousands of movies were made, most by a few large and powerful studios. Directors, actors and writers worked for these studios. They made some movies that today are considered great art.
Hollywood, the area in Los Angels, also reached its high point in these years. Many famous and glamorous(富有魔力的)movie stars, like Bette Davis and Clark Gable, lived in Hollywood.
Today, Hollywood is not what it was. More movies are made outside of Hollywood. Many studios have moved. The movie stars have also moved to areas like Beverly Hills and Malibu.
But visitors to Hollywood today can go to the famous Chinese Theater and see the footprints and autographs of movie stars. They can go down the Walk of Fame, on Hollywood Boulevard, and see the golden stars in the sidewalk.

A survey was made in a middle school on how the students spend their spare time. The results are as follows: 39 percent of the spare time is spent in doing homework, which shows their heavy study burden; at the same time, the students also spend a lot of time in entertainment, such as watching TV, listening to music and playing computer games. Most students show little interest in doing exercise or housework.
As is shown in the chart , only 10% of the time is taken up with sports activities. I think the school should encourage the students to do more exercise after class. This way, they may be healthier and more energetic
