Millions of people in Britain struggle out of bed each morning, fumble(乱摸) into some clothes, and make their way to a cup of coffee and the morning newspaper. They need something 36  to remind them that the rest of the day will be 37  different than getting up. This need may be the 38  that many of them turn their 39  eyes to the cartoons section of the newspaper as they sip (呷) their first cups of the day.

Cartoons reflect the times and the troubles and worries of people. They give people an opportunity to 40  themselves and at familiar situations. In times of prosperity, for example, cartoons show people 41  the good economic situation. They also make fun of the 42 that people make for themselves—like making a problem out of which type of car to buy. In 43 times—times of economic troubles—people want someone or something to 44  their troubles on. Cartoons provide scapegoats (替身) . They also help people to see the 45  in a not-so-funny situation. 46  , a cartoon might say that the government of a country is responsible for the bad economy and 47  show the government leaders as a group of ridiculous people. Being able to use the leaders as scapegoats and to laugh at the leaders somehow make people feel 48  about their situations.

Cartoons also make people laugh at their own personal 49  . Young people who are not always 50  of how to act can smile at their awkwardness (尴尬). Old people whose 51 children pay little attention to them can chuckle (暗笑) at their neglect and loneliness. Students who have studied too 52  before an examination can laugh at their worries. Anyone’s problems are made bigger-than-life in the cartoons. Perhaps the problems 53  funny because there is humor in something that is real being make unreal.

A cartoon combines art and humor. When it is skillfully 54  , a simple line drawing and a few words can make people laugh. Their troubles seem less 55  and they enjoy life more fully.

My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parents, I tried my best to talk to him, but the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had six failing grades for the year. At this rate he would never graduate. I sent him to the school to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.

One night, I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and pleaded for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything more for my son. I am at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you.”

I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences.” Before he could say another word, I choked up and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It’s out of my hands.” For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, “Thank you for your time,” and hung up.

Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he even made the honor roll. In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were astonished at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, “Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?” I nodded. “That was me. I thought I’d play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really hit me how much I was hurting you. That’s when I knew I had to make you proud.”

The first reality TV show in the world was called Expedition Robinson and it was shown in Sweden in 1997. Half the population of the country watched the final event and a new kind of TV program was born. Two years later in Holland, the first series of Big Brother was filmed. Again, it was a great success and the final program was watched by 15 million people. Now more than 20 countries around the world have Big Brother of Expedition Robinson on their TV screens. The ordinary people who take part in the programs are known by millions of people in their own countries and reality TV has become big, big business.

For the TV producers, reality TV is a dream come true because many of the programs cost nothing to make. At some point, the television viewers are asked to telephone the program to vote or to apply to take part in the show. It is the cost of these telephone calls that pays for the shows. The winner makes a record and millions of copies of the record are sold. His or her pictures are published on the covers of magazines or on the front pages of newspapers, and then, they are quickly forgotten.

But not everyone is happy about reality TV. In the Portugal, two TV channels got into trouble because they showed too much of the personal lives of the people in the shows. Before you buy a jet printer, you’d better decide in advance how much printing you need to do. Then you can print test pages using a variety of printers, a good way to get a quick picture of what a machine can really do. After that, check the instruction carefully. Here are factors to consider.

Resolution: Resolution refers to the number of dots that a printer lays down per inch of paper. Higher-resolution printers theoretically produce more detailed inages with more lifelike colors than lower-resolution printers. But resolution doesn’t tell the whole tale; some printers are just better at photo while others are better at texts.

Speed: After resolution, the most important factor for many buyers is speed. More money buys a faster printer, which is important if you frequently print long texts.

Duty cycle: This is the number of pages per month a printer can produce without self-destroying. It differs from a few hundred pages to thousands. Overwork your printer will probably break down, always at the worst possible moment. For ordinary home and school use, duty cycle isn’t important, but if you are in a busy office, or you are printing drafts of a book, spend a few dollars more for a heavier-duty machine.

Ink consumption: Gillette came up with the idea a century ago---sell razors and they’ll buy your blades(刀片) forever. Printer producers have taken this into heart. In fact, the reason you can buy a decent ink jet for 100 dollars is that you’ll be buying 30 dollars ink cartridges for life, particularly if you turn out party invitation, greeting cards, buttons, calendars and other projects. As a rule, low-end printers cost more because their cartridges are smaller and require mote frequent replacement.

63. Which of the following can produce the clearest printers of pictures?

  A. a faster printer with higher resolution.

  B. a faster higher resolution printer.

  C. a right kind of printer with higher resolution.

  D. a heavier-duty and higher resolution printer.

64. Supposing Smith is a writer, the best printer for him to buy is ___.

  A. a low-end printer B. an expensive printer

  C. a higher-resolution printer D. a heavier-duty printer

65. In the writer’s opinion, you can buy a decent ink jet printer at 100 dollars because ___.

  A. the high price will encourage you to buy 30 dollars ink cartridges for all your life

  B. the producer is afraid that you will buy 30 dollars ink cartridges instead of the ink jet

  C. the low price will keep you buying 30 dollars ink cartridges one after another

  D. the printer can’t work well without the decent ink jet

66. What is the most important in choosing the right ink jet printer?

  A. Selecting the cheapest one B. Buying the most advanced one

  C. Meeting your own requirement D. Printing test pages with a variety of printer

D

Sporting activities are essentially modified (转化) forms of hunting behavior. Viewed biologically, the modern footballer is in reality a member of a hunting group. His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and his prey into a goalmouth. If his aim is accurate and his scores a goal, he enjoys the hunter’s triumph of killing his prey.

To understand how this transformation has taken place we must briefly look back at our forefathers. They spent over a million years evolving(进化) as cooperative hunters. Their very survival depended on success in the hunting-field. Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed. They became chasers(追赶), runners, jumpers aimers, throwers and pre-killers. They cooperated as skillful male-group attackers.

Then about ten thousand years ago, after this immensely long period of hunting their food, they became farmers. Their improved intelligence, so vital to their old hunting life, was put to a new use---that of controlling and domesticating their prey. The hunt became suddenly out of date. The food was there on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risk and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer esscential for survival.

The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new outlets. Hunting for sport replaced hunting for necessity. This new activities involved all the original hunting sequences but the aim of the operation was no longer to avoid starvation. Instead the sportsmen set off to test their skill against prey that were no longer essential to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten but were much simple ways of obtaining a meaty meal.

67. The author believes that sporting activities ___.

  A. are forms of biological development

  B. have actually developed from hunting

  C. are essentially forms of taming the prey

  D. have changed the ways of hunting

68. In a football game what is equal to the prey in hunting is ___.

  A. any member of the opposing team B. the goal keeper

  C. the goal-mouth D. the football

69. The word “operation” refers to ___.

  A. sports activities B. hunting

  C. prey killing            D. domesticating animals

70. Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?

  A. It is farming that gives human beings enough leisure time for activities.

  B. Farming is very important in human civilization because it saves human beings from risks

and uncertainties of hunting for survival.

  C. It is hunting that provides human beings with much simply ways of obtaining meaty meals.

  D. Sporting activities satisfy the desire of modern man to exercise hunting skills which his

forefathers developed for survival.

               E

In the modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing weill and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an oppsite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “ I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

71. What does this passage mainly talk about?

  A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

  B. Opinions about competition are different among people.

  C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

  D. Failure are necessary experiences in competition.

72. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

  A. It pushes society forward. B. It builds up a sense of duty.

  C. It improves personal abitlities. D. It encourages individual effects.

73. The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in paragraph 3 means ___.

  A. those who try their best to win

  B. those who value competition most highly

  C. those who are against competition most strongly

  D. those who rely on others most for success

74. What is the similar belief of the true competitions and those with a “desire to fail”?

  A. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others’.

  B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts.

  C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.

  D. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.

75. Which point of view may the author agree to?

  A. Every effort should be paid back.

  B. Competition should be encouraged.

  C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

  D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

Dear Mr. Wang,

I’m a student in Class 1, Senior 3. Recently we played out the practice to play music during the lunch time, and the students have had many talks about it. Most of us agree that music should be played. As we know, music can produce a lively and happy atmosphere. Music can provide us with relaxation after hard study, which reduces the tiredness. Besides, music can make us not only feel happy and excited but also get the unexpected results.

On the other hand, as the break at noon is short, some students think what is needed during the break is peace instead of the noise produced by the music. sometimes the music affects those who are doing their homework or discussing the problems. What’s more, it influences on some of them who want to take a nap during the time.

In my opinion, I think playing light music at noon is enjoyable.

In a word, our school life is getting more and more colourful and interesting.

Dear Ma Lili,

It’s quite all right for you to be anxious about a new term when something new comes up.

You should try to look at your problems clearly and find out what the mess really is, and make a list of the subjects that you feel really difficult. Next, write down what you will need to do to turn your weak points into strengths. Make a plan and do to it every day. In addition, you’d better turn to the teachers or friends when you can’t solve the problem yourself. Sometimes you can discuss with your classmates and learn from them by watching. Learn to think in a scientific way is very important. In time, you will develop your own way of learning things, and it won’t be a mess at all. Hope you’ll make progress soon.
