Life behind the Bar
Wu Junqi has long been linked to alcohol. Of course he's not a drunkard (酒鬼), he actually rarely has a drink. The 33-year-old man is a bartender (调酒师) in a pub named "Shock" in Beijing.
Wu's "morning" starts at 7 pm and his day usually finishes at two in the morning. Standing in front of a shelf full of bottles of alcohol (酒精), he makes one cocktail (鸡尾酒) after another for his customers.
"I make a cocktail to match the customer's age, mood and even the clothes he wears," said Wu. He started his job eight years ago after he ended his career as a jockey (马术师)due to injury.
While more and more young people are becoming interested in this cool job, Wu said several months' training and a certificate (证书) are not enough to be a good bartender. According to him, rich life experiences and knowledge are also important. Like a painter or an architect, he believes a good bartender is an artist. "Our work is not as simple as just shaking .the bottle to mix a drink. Inspiration (灵感) and creativity are very important to form your own style."
Working in a pub also requires you to be a good listener, according to Wu. While some bar-goers enjoy themselves, others can have problems and worries. "You have to listen and try to persuade them to think more positively. If a customer wants to escape his problems by getting drunk, you have to stop him at the right time."
Wu got his senior bartender certificate in 2001. He says English is important in his work and is part of the exam because most alcoholic drinks come from abroad.
"You have to know the brand of drink and different types of cocktail. If the customers are foreigners, it is good to be able to chat with them."
Although Wu refused to say how much he earns, he said his income is in two parts: 2,000 yuan salary plus a commission (提成). "It is nonsense to say that a bartender earns a 10,000 yuan a month," he said.
56. According to the text, Wu usually works _________.
A. in the morning B. in the evening and at night
C. in the daytime D. in the afternoon

Have you ever dreamed of visiting a planet in the Milky Way (银河系) ? While the trip sounds exciting, it would take years and years to reach your destination. So in the future, bedtime for astronauts may be more than a few hours of regular shut-eye. They would have to sleep for years.
European researchers are now conducting hibernation experiments. The study may help them understand whether humans could ever sleep through the years it would take for a space flight to distant planets. "If there was an effective technology, it could make deep-space travel a reality," said Mark Ayre of the European Space Agency last month.
What seems like science fiction is not completely unlikely. Researchers have been able to use chemicals to put living cells into a sleep-like state where they don't age. They have now moved on to small, non-hibernating mammals (哺乳动物)like rats.
A major challenge is the fact that cells can be very simple systems, whereas body organs are far more complex. "it's like moving from a simple Apple computer to a supercomputer," said Marco Biggiogera, a hibernation researcher at Italy's University of Pavia. Just like bears and frogs, the hibernation of human beings would cause a person's metabolism (新陈代谢) to lower so they would need less energy.
Medical research, however, is just half of a space flight hibernation system. There is the challenge of designing a suitable protective shelter(栖身所). Such a shelter would provide the proper environment for hibernation, such as the proper temperature, It would also have to monitor (监控) life functions and serve the physiological needs of the hibernator.
According to Ayre, the six-person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission to .Jupiter's moon (卫星) Callisto, could be an opportunity to use human hibernation. The mission aims to send six humans on a five-year flight to Callisto, where they will spend 30 days, in 2045.
60. According to the text, the hibernation research _________.
A. is just an idea B. is always a science fiction
C. has already finished successfully D. has made some progress
61. In a hibernating state, a person needs _________.
A. less sleep B. more food C. less energy D. more movement
62. The first try of the hibernation technology _________ the six-person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission to Jupiter's mo6n Callisto.
A. will be B. has been planned for C. is certain to be D. may be
63. What is the best title of the text?
A. Hibernation Study for Space Travel B. Welcome to Our Space Travel
C. To Hibernate, to Live Longer D. Welcome to the Milky Way

Life is difficult.
But life is no longer difficult once we truly understand and accept it.
Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that their difficulties represent (代表) a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process (过程) of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems depending on their nature cause in us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole of solving problems that life has its meaning.
Problems are the serious tests that tell success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit we encourage the human ability to solve problems just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, "Those things that hurt, instruct." It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.
64. We can become stronger by___________.
A. avoiding problems B. admitting our failure
C. taking a rest D. facing and solving the problems of life
65. In most people's heart, life should be ____________.
A. simple B. easy C. difficult D. hard
66. In fact, life is made up of __________.
A. both pains and joys B. joys C. either pains or joys D. pains
67. It is in the __________ of solving problems that life has its meaning.
A. result B. start C. process D. middle
D
At the mouth of the Pearl River in Guangdong Province, 300 square kilometres of water have turned red recently.
The strange event is known as the "red tide (赤潮)" and has been around for more than a week. The red tide is caused by the rapid growth of a certain type of algae (藻类). Algae are tiny, single-celled (单细胞的) plants that live in the sea. They serve as the energy producers at the base of the food cycle. When this particular type of algae reproduce in large numbers, they turn the ocean red.
Red tide algae produce poison and are dangerous to wildlife in the sea. They may even kill fish that feed on them by affecting their nervous systems so they can't breathe. Dead fish are often washed up on beaches as a direct result of this red tide. And the danger could also extend to humans who eat the fish. What's more, the algae also produce a terrible smell that makes it seem as if someone is holding your throat.
For local fishermen, the red tide is a tragedy. The poison kills large numbers of fish every time the algae bloom. Some of those fish are highly-prized. They are bred (繁殖) by the fishermen and cost them a small fortune.
No one really knows what causes red tides. Some experts believe it's high temperatures combined with a lack of wind and rain. But they appear all over the world. The East China Sea is frequently attacked by this killer algae. And it hangs around for a long time. In 1986, one red tide in the US lasted for 16 months!
The only way to fight it is with large amounts of rain and strong offshore (向海面吹的) winds that can break up the algae. Unfortunately, humans can control neither of these forces.
"We can only forecast the movements of existing red tides based on weather reports, wind and wave directions," said Li Liang, a Chinese scientist.
"Still, being on guard can avoid some losses. For instance, fishermen can avoid using water already infected that has not yet turned red," he added.
68. After reading the passage, we can conclude that ____________.
A. red tide has no effect on people's health
B. whoever eats the fish killed-by red tides, he will die
C. if people eat the fish killed by red tides, they will feel terrible
D. people will find it hard to breathe when they smell the bad smell produced by the algae

A. stays B. erupts C. eradicates D. escapes
70. The last two paragraphs mainly tell us ____________.
A. scientists are struggling with red tides
B. scientists give some advice on how to avoid losses, even if they can do little about red tides
C. China owns the most advanced technology to forecast the movement of red tides so that they can carry out further study
D. scientists are helping the local fishers to reduce their losses when a red tide happens
71. The main idea of the passage is __________.
A. that red tide has polluted most seawater in Guangdong
B. that humans are making efforts to control red tide
C. why a red tide takes place
D. that fishes were killed as a result of red tide
72. The author thinks __________.

Should students make friends on line? Some people say “yes”. The Internet helps to make many friends. Chatting on the line, students can more freely express their feelings and opinions, and even get help with their foreign language studies.
Others, however, think students should not. They say making friends on line is a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningfully on study. Besides, some students get cheated on line.
It is my opinion that students should place their study, health and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can readily find it in our classmates and other people around us. (103 words)
