My grandfather used to have a beautiful gold pocket watch. He wore it on a fine gold chain across the front of his waistcoat, and when I was small he promised to leave it to me in his will.
“When I’m gone,” he said, “this is going to be yours.”
Unfortunately that will never happen now. About three months ago, my grandfather came up to London to visit us. The first Sunday morning after he arrived, my youngest son said he wanted to go to the park.
“We’ll do better than that,” said my grandfather, “we’ll go and feed the pigeons in Trafalgar Square.” So off they went. They got home about tea-time and my grandfather was looking very upset.
“My watch,” he said, “it’s gone. Someone must have stolen it while we were feeding the pigeons.”
“Did you tell the police?” I asked.
“No,” he said, “I didn’t think it would do any good.”
“You should have reported it,” I said. “Perhaps you just lost it.”
“No,” he replied, shaking his head. “Someone must have taken it. But I know what I’m going to do.”
My grandfather put an advertisement in the Personal Column of the Evening Standard and Evening News for a week.
A few minutes after one on an afternoon, a small, nervous man, wearing a cloth cap, approached my grandfather. “Excuse me, Sir,” he asked, “are you the gentleman enquiring about his pocket watch?”
My grandfather nodded. “Well, you must understand, Sir, that I didn’t have it, but the gentleman who did has asked me to give it back.”
From the pocket of his rather dirty overcoat, he produced my grandfather’s watch. My grandfather was delighted. He paid the man 100 pounds, as promised, fixed the watch chain back where they belonged, and solemnly shook hands with the little man.
My grandfather went back to the bus stop. He thought he would like to have another look at his watch. So, smiling to himself, he unbuttoned his coat and looked down. The smile froze on his lips. The watch and chain were no longer there.

I was in lodgings (寄宿处) now, on my own, but the other lodgers had streams of visitors up and down the stairs past my door. None of these disturbed me except one girl who sang softly to herself an old Russian folk song as she ran up to the room above. It was a sound of extraordinary sweetness, musical, soft, unselfconscious and happy. I began to listen out for it, jump up from my table, and throw open the door to catch a glimpse of her as she passed, but I was always too late. I asked the people upstairs who she was, and described the beautiful sounds she made. They became rather reserved and exchanged glances and hesitatingly admitted it might be Sally. I gathered she was someone special, not to be discussed in the ordinary way, and became vaguely curious to meet her. But the last thing I wanted at that stage was to get involved with anybody. I’d just come to the end of a rather painful friendship, and now I had work to do.
One day, I came face to face with a girl on the landing. It was certainly her; whoever made that noise would look as she did. We stood and stared at each other too long for comfort. I broke the moment and, excusing myself, moved past her because it was too like the movies. I thought for some time of that long, silent stare, and laughed. She was tall and proud-looking, with a
slight round-shouldered look that made me breathless and I didn’t know why.

D. unwilling to be involved with Sally
C
Gestures are the silent language of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood.
In the US, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal discussion. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet each other with a hug (拥抱).
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about 2.5 feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me.” or “Excuse me.”
Americans like to look at the other in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. When you stare at someone, however, it is not polite.
For Americans, thumbs-up means “yes”, “very good” or “well done”. Thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, one might put up one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger (食指). Americans shake their index fingers at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.
Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes confusing (困惑的). If you don’t know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.
64. When you shake hands with an American, you should .
A. shake his / her hand firmly
B. put your hands on his / her shoulder

65. In the US, people usually if you stand too close to them.
A. feel friendly
B. get uncomfortable
C. keep still
D. hit you angrily
66. If you talk with an American friend, it’s polite to .
A. stare at him / her
B. look at the ground
C. look at him / her in the eyes
D. look here and there
67. When an American gives you the thumbs-up, he, in fact .
A. means that you are number one
B. wants to please you
C. needs to call a waiter
D. expresses his satisfaction to you
68. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. People greet each other by shaking hands in America.
B. Every country has their own gestures.
C. Learning a culture's body language is very important and necessary.
D. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger.
D
Beijing has started a battle to get rid of “Chinglish” (Chinese English). The “Language mandarins” of Beijing have decided that Chinglish is a disease for China’s modernizing claim and must be obliterated before the city hosts the Olympic Games in 2008.
A road sign on the Avenue of Eternal Peace (Chang’an Street), for example, advised: “Take Notice of safe; The Slippery are Very Crafty, ” a warning that the sidewalk was slippery (滑). Another sign in a Beijing park reads: “Little grass is smiling slightly, please walk on sidewalk”.
Li Honghai, the city official in charge of the battle, said:“Linguistic perfection (语言美) is becoming increasingly important with the rise in the number of the foreigners flowing into the city.”
However, not everyone shares the disdain (蔑视) of the Beijing government for the mixed language. “The choice of words is uncontrolled. One can either choose the verbs, adverbs, nouns or whatever one likes,” explained one Hongkong linguist on an Internet website.
So many examples exist that several Internet sites have been set up to collect Chinglish phrases. Many come from English instructions on packages such as a candle marked with “Keep this candle out of children” and a model boat—curiously named Posh Sailboat— which means “Please don’t place it in dusty play.”
If the battle against Chinglish is successful, Chinese will also turn their attention to the English language versions of newspapers, which play an even more important role in teaching right English.
69.The underlined word “obliterated” refers to .
A. removed B. exploited C. translated D. beautified
70.From the passage, we know that .
A.everyone shares the disdain for the mixed language
B.all the people don’t share the disdain for the mixed language
C.Chinglish usually communicates in many cases
D.several Internet sites have been set up to clear the Chinglish phrases
71.We can infer that the English language versions of newspapers .
A.should be in duty to teach normal English
B.should report the battle above
C.should be paid more attention to
D.should collect more Chinglish phrases
72.Which of the following signs is Chinglish?
A B C D

With so much change in schools, heads welcome the chance to refresh their skills. And Chris Mitten, head teacher of the 230-pupil Roche Community Primary School, in St Austell, Cornwall, found that a new leadership course not only introduced him to new ideas, it also helped him to delegate more effectively.
Chris has been a head for eight years. His leadership and management was described as very good in Roche’s most recent Foster report, but he believed his school could do more to improve. Like many heads, he felt separated from colleagues in other schools and wanted to share ideas with them. He also wanted to empower staff to take more ownership of school improvement.
He signed up for two programmes organized by the National College for School Leadership ---one leadership programme for serving heads and its other programme for consultant leaders, who will work to help other schools improve. The college hopes to enlist 400 consultant leaders in 2003.
Roche has a strong record of staff professional development, and has been praised for its training programmes for teaching assistants. Since Chris completed his courses, other staff have been encouraged to improve their training. Staff are now more involved in collective decision-making and in taking delegated responsibilities. There is greater openness to new ideas. The whole school has been refreshed as a result of their head teacher refreshing his leadership skills.
And Chris’s work with primaries as a consultant leader means he helps to solve the literacy and numeracy problems they face.
73. Chris took up a new leadership course because .
A. he liked new ideas
B. he could encourage other staff to improving their training
C. he wanted to solve literacy and numeracy problems
D. he hoped that his whole school could be improved
74. He believed his school could do more to improve. He meant to .
A. be head teacher for a longer time
B. help other schools to improve
C. share ideas with his staff
D. take more ownership of school improvement
75. We can infer from the passage that____________.
A. Roche is a successful college
B. Roche pays much attention to staff training
C. Chris is the first consultant leader
D. Chris has fallen behind other heads
