When I first came to the USA, I made friends with a neighbor who used to live only two blocks away from my street. We used to visit each other and go out together sometimes. This friend taught me a lot about American 51 , but in some cases I had to learn the 52 way, because we didn’t have enough time together for me to learn all about American culture from him.
One day this same friend invited me to a party. It wasn’t a (n) 53 party, only some kind of informal get-together. Since it was 54 time, we had a cookout, 55 most of his American friends and relatives were known to me, but there were others I had never met before.
It was the most 56 party for me when I noticed that everybody was wearing jeans and simple T-shirts for the day, 57 I arrived in proper dress with my shoes and my hair all fixed for a fancy party. It was hard to explain my embarrassment(窘迫) to the other 58 . When one of them turned around and said, “What nice clothes! What’s the occasion?”I felt my 59 burning hot. I didn’t 60 at all. If she knew how 61 I already felt, she wouldn’t have said that to me.

In earlier days few people read Whitman’s poems. One person who did read them was Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was then a country lawyer. He loved the strength and honesty of Whitman’s words. He often read them to visitors in his office. Whitman didn’t know Lincoln, but he wrote a long article about slavery and presidency. Whitman was against slavery. He wanted to see a new kind of president, not a professional politician, but an ordinary working man. This man would be wise, healthy and middle-aged. He would have a beard. Whitman didn’t know it, but he was describing Lincoln. Before he was a lawyer, Lincoln worked with his hands. He was one of ordinary people. He was wise, healthy and middle-aged, and he had a beard. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the US.
In March 1865, Whitman was in Washington too. Abraham Lincoln became president for the second time. Whitman wanted to see the ceremony. The two men had never met, but they had seen each other. Washington was very hot in summer. Sometimes Lincoln went outside the city. He passed Whitman’s house on the way. He and Whitman often nodded to each other.

Suppose you are reading a book. Suppose, too, you suddenly close your eyes. Can you still see the book?“Of course not,”you will say. But can you tell why? You would probably say,“When I close my eyes, my eyesight cannot get out of my eyes to get to the book.”But this explanation is wrong.
You cannot see any object unless light from that object gets into your eyes. Some of the things you see give off light of their own. The sun, the stars, a light lamp are examples that can be seen by their own light. Such things are luminous. Most of the things you see are not giving off light of their own. They are simply reflecting light that falls on them from the sun or some other luminous body. The moon, for example, does not give off any light of its own. It is nonluminous. You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects in your direction. So moonlight is only secondhand sunlight.
When you look at a book, it sends to your eyes some of the light which falls on it, and you see the book. If light could be kept out from where you are so that there would be no light for the book to reflect, then you couldn’t see the book even with your eyes wide open.
Light travels so fast that the time in which it travels from the book you are reading to your eyes is so short as if there were no time at all. Light reaches us from the moon, which is about 380,000 kilometers away, in only a little more than a second.

A.380,000 B. 300,000 C. 400,000 D.190.000
85.Which one is TRUE?
A. All the things you can see give off light.
B. Light from the book is much shorter than that from the moon.
C. The moment you open your eyes the light from the book travels to your eyes.
