Wild elephants live in herds of 10 to about 50. The leader is usually female. A herd can go through a forest quietly. It travels in a single line. It goes about six miles an hour. When frightened, it may run at about 25 miles an hour. When they reach water, elephants swim across. They are great swimmers.
Elephants eat grass, leaves, small branches, and bark. They particularly like the tender leaves on the top of trees. How do they get these leaves? They use their heads to knock trees down. They can easily knock down a 30-foot tree. Elephants also eat berries, mangoes, coconuts, corn, and sugar cane. They love salt. A wild male adult eats from 500 to 600 pounds of food a day.
Many people want to find the graveyards (墓地) of elephants. There is a strong belief that such graveyards exist. Here is why. Bones and tusks of dead elephants are almost never found, Searches have been made in forests. Grassy plains have been searched too. But neither bones nor tusks are found. Elephants don't live forever. Where are their bones? They don't just bury themselves. Here is one belief. Say an elephant gets sick or old (over 60 years), it instinctively (本能地) knows death is near. It leaves the herd. It goes off to a secret graveyard. The place is known only to elephants, and perhaps other animals, but not to humans. Obviously, such a graveyard would be filled with ivory tusks. These were once very valuable. The objective of explorers was to find this "gold" mine. This graveyard belief may be a truth or a myth. But it is romantic (传奇式的). It would be nice if it were true.

Members of the Secret Service emergency response team, including one holding a barking dog, ran after Patterson with their guns drawn and surrounded him near the mw of cameras set up for television stand-ups.
"I have intelligence information for the president," he said, waving his arms in the air. "I'm not afraid of you," Patterson screamed at the officers who were ordering him to tie ground with guns drawn.
Patterson finally kneeled on the ground and was taken into custody (拘留) shortly before 4 p,m. He cut his hand jumping the fence and was taken to George Washington University hospital for treatment and was to appear in court Monday, Zahren said.

In an amazing feat, French surgeons (外科医生) have completed the first ever face transplant (移植) on a woman from Valenciennes, France. While this controversial(有争议的) operation has been studied and worked on for years by doctors around the world, until now one has never been successfully completed.
Doctors say that the woman, who lost her nose, lips and chin after being attacked by a dog, will not look like the donor (捐献者). While this woman will never look like her old self again, these doctors gave her a completely new lower face after five hours of surgery. Since the dog's attack the woman has not been able to eat or speak on her own, and this transplant gives her hope that she will eat and speak again.
The reason that face transplants have been so hard in the past is mainly because the body will
reject (排斥) transplants from another person. People who have transplants are put on anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their lives. However, skin transplants will usually not take unless they come from a donor whose bean is still beating. In the case of the French woman's face transplant, her donor was a multi-organ who was brain dead.
Even though this woman will now be able to live a more normal life, face transplants are still a very controversial form of surgery.
69. Why did the French woman want to do the face transplant?
A. Because she was unable to eat or speak after the dog's attack ruined her face.

D. Face transplant operation can't be agreed about so far.

One possible version:
Our class made a survey on our local government's decision to speed up its tourism. Most people think tourism can promote cultural exchange among different nationalities, which helps more people learn about our local cultures and customs. They also believe tourism can provide more chances for jobs, which leads to tile quick development of local economy. Besides, tourism can enrich our lives and improve our living conditions.
However, some people think tourism may cause serious pollution and do damage to the natural environment. What's more, too many tourists will bring about heavy traffic jams.
In our opinion, it's necessary to develop tourism as it does good to both the people and the local economy. Meanwhile, the government must pay great attention to the environmental protection. Some measures should be taken to keep the balance of nature and get more people to support the project.

W: My sister's baby arrived yesterday. An eight-pound boy. They named him Francis. That's spelled with all "i" before the "s".
M: That's tight. Frances with an "e" is a girl's name, but they are both pronounced the same. What if the baby was a girl? Did they have a girl's name in mind too?
W: They couldn't agree on one. Whenever he suggested a girl's name, she said, "I bate that name? " Some people have very strong feelings about names.
M: I think most people do.
W: That reminds me of something I read a few days ago. Somebody found that school children with different names get different marks in school just because of their names. Students with names like Huber and Elmer often get law marks. That's what the article said.
M: That's not fair!
W: Of course. But styles change, and those names aren't in style any more.
M: Well I hope Francis won't be out of style by the time your nephew starts going to school

M: I say, aren't you Helen Linton? We went to school together, I think.
W: I'm Helen Linton, all right, but who are you?
M: Don't you remember me? I'm Jordan Williams. I was the fellow who sat at the back and always gave the wrong answers.
W: Oh, it's you! You were the captain of the school football team.
M: But this is really a surprise. It must be five years since we last met in London, isn't it? And now to run into each other in Paris! Do you come here often?
W: It's my first visit. I'm on my honeymoon. This is my husband, Tom.
M: So you are married. It's very nice to meet you, Tom! Is this your first trip to Paris, too?
W: Tom doesn't speak English. He comes from a small Italian village.
M: Don't tell me you went wandering around small Italian villages before you met Tom.
W: We met in London. Tom was at a language school there.
M: And how much Italian do you speak? As far as I remember, you weren't that good at languages at school.
W: Not a word.
M: So you don't speak Italian and Tom doesn't speak English. How on earth did you manage to get married?
W: Looking back, I have no idea. But at least we haven't quarreled yet.

M: Well, we've now heard some different views about transportation. Susanne, when I mention the word "transportation" to you, what comes to mind?
W: Oh, a car. Most Americans think that.
M: Right. An automobile. Have you done a lot of driving through the United States?
W: Yes. I have. I actually started driving when I was thirteen, I got my license when I was sixteen.
M: I see.
W: In a very small town, my brothers took me out to the local square and I learned to drive there. I guess they felt it was safer there.
M: I see, so you are from a very small town in the United States?
W: Yes, in Missouri.
M: I see. What kinds of transportations did they have there in your town?
W: Only cars.
M: Oh, I see.
W: I mean, there were no buses there. Well, of course them were buses and trains that passed through to other cities, hit the town itself was too small.
M: I see. By the way, have you been on a long journey or on a big ship?
W: I've crossed the Pacific from Honolulu to Tokyo once on the old President Wilson, and the most unforgettable trip I guess was from London to New York on the Queen, Mary, I'm so glad we had a chance to do that. Those were really wonderful ships.

Welcome to the Yellowstone National Park. Before we begin our nature walk today, I'd like to give you a short history of our National Park Service. The National Park Service began in the late 1800's. A small group of people found the land now called Yellowstone, and after hours of discussing around a campfire they decided that it should be enjoyed by everyone. Two years later, the government declared that it would be the first national park in the world.
After it became a public park, many other areas of beautiful scenery were set aside and, in 1916, those parks began to be managed by the National Park Service. I'm on duty at all time to answer questions and help visitors with problems. Nature walks, guided tours, and campfire talks are offered by specially trained members. The park service also protects the animals and plants within the parks.
