Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activities. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey, golf, or tennis, it may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind, which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “game”. We would be mistaken in this assumption. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is a obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical capacities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his prime by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than young men. But they probably climb with more skill and less wasted effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.
56. Mountaineering is a sport which involves_________.

57. The main difference between a sport and a game lies in origin of the_______.
A. uniform B. activity C. rules D. skills

As is true in all cultures, Americans first hear music in the context of family life. Much of that music comes from the records on the family radio or television, and this “canned” music is especially important in developing children’s musical taste. People often say they were very strongly influenced by the kind of music they heard before they were old enough to have their own records or choose the station on the family radio. There is usually some live music in the family as well. Many mothers and grandmothers sing lullabies (催眠曲) , for example. These can be important since in America, as elsewhere, lullabies not only lull a baby to sleep but promise, praise and teach cultural values. Sometimes lullabies are the only songs in a foreign language that American children with strong ethnic (种族的) backgrounds hear, since people often fall back on old, familiar languages for intimate (亲密的) songs.
Another important family context is the automobile, where families learn songs and has become one of the basic centers of Family experience, and it is one of the important place where the family gathers for an extended period of time without outside disturbance. The family used to have to choose between making their own music in the car or being force-fed by the radio, but the recent invention of automobile cassette recorders and eight-track play back machines allows a family to have more control over what they hear when they drive.

The average person learns most of the 30 000-40 000 words whose meanings he or she recognizes by hearing them or getting familiar with them in the context or simply absorbing them without conscious(意识到的) effort. The best way to build a good vocabulary, therefore,is to read a great deal and to participate in a lot of good talks. There are relatively few words that we learn permanently(永久地) by purposefully referring to dictionaries or keeping word lists. However, even those extra few are of value, and no one will make a mistake by working on developing a larger vocabulary. Here are some suggestions of how to do it.
Read plenty of good books. When you come across a new word,or a new meaning of an old word, stop and see if you can understand it from its context. If you can’t,and if you can manage without interrupting the thought of the book too much, look it up in a dictionary or ask somebody and then repeat its meaning to yourself a couple of times. If you are really conscientious(认真的),write the word and its meaning in a personal vocabulary list—preferably using it in a sentence,or you can keep a special vocabulary notebook.Go over the list from time to time.Further, try to use the new word in writing or conversation a few times over the next several days.
Listen to good talks and be alert to new words you hear or to new meanings of words you already know. Then treat them just as you treat the new words you read.
Learn and be alert to the parts of words:prefixes, suffixes and roots.Knowing them enables you to make intelligent guesses about the meanings of words.
If you are studying a foreign language,be alert to words in that language which relate to words in English.English has inherited(继承) or borrowed much of its vocabulary of 500 000-600 000 words from Latin,Greek,French,Spanish and German.
68.When you meet a new word in reading, what should you do?
A. Guess its meaning. B. Ask somebody.
C. Look it up in a dictionary. D. All of the above.
69.According to this passage, the best way to build a good vocabulary is .
A. to remember a lot B. to read a great deal
C. to take part in a lot of good talks D. both B and C
70.The phrase “be alert to” in the third paragraph may best be replaced by “ ”.
A. look at B. pay attention to
C. write down D. learn by heart
71.In the fourth paragraph the word “them” refers to .
A. the parts of words B. prefixes C. suffixes D. roots

Without proper training, dogs will behave like wild animals. They will soil your house, destroy your belongings, fight other dogs and even bite you. Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing.
One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to train it. Obedience training(驯服)doesn’t solve all behavior problems, but it’s the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training opens us a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do.
Training is also an easy way to establish the social order. When your dog obeys a simple request of “Come here, sit”, it is showing obedience and respect for you. It is not necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the dog pack(群)by using extreme measures. You can teach your dog its subordinate(从属的)role by teaching it to show obedience to you. Most dogs love performing tricks for you to accept that you are in charge.
Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. A well-trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a greater amount of freedom than an untrained animal.
72. Behavior problems of dogs are believed to .
A. get worse in modern society B. occur only when they go wild
C. be just part of their nature D. present a threat to society
73. Effective communication between a dog and its owner is .
A. an extreme measure in obedience training.
B. a good way to teach the dog new tricks
C. the foundation for dogs to perform tasks
D. essential to solve the dog’s behavior problems
74. Why do pet dogs love performing tricks for their masters? .
A. To show their willingness to obey.
B. To show their affection for their masters.
C. To avoid being punished.
D. To win leadership of the dog pack.
75. When a dog has received effective obedience training, which of the following is true? .
A. Its owner will enjoy a family life.
B. Its owner can give the dog more freedom.
C. Its owner can give the dog more rewards.
D. Its owner will have more confidence in himself.

书面表达:
Some students think that a nice face is a letter of recommendation. Good appearance often makes a big difference in social communication, competition, finding jobs and so on .Not only can it help you become more confident, but also it helps you be impressed. Physical beauty is likely to draw much attention.
Other students have different opinions. They hold the idea that good appearance will buy no beef . Spiritual beauty is more important. A beautiful person is not the one with a good looking , but the one with a broad and kind heart.
Actually ,as is known to all ,the standard of beauty changes with different societies, cultures and nations. Even if you don’t have a nice face, you still can be attractive if you are a person with a kind heart and broad intelligence.
