Dinosaurs from the distant past ! Space battles from the distant future! There has been a revolution in special effects, and it has transformed the movies we see.

The revolution began in the mid-1970s with George Lucas’s Star Wars, a film that stunned audiences; that revolution continues to the present, with dramatic changes in special –effects technology. The company behind these changes is Lucas’s Industrial Light & Magic(ILM). And the man behind the company is Dennis Muren, who has worked with Lucas since Star Wars.

Muren’s interest in special effects began very early; at age 6,he was photographing toy dinosaurs and spaceships. By 10, he had an 8-millimeter movie camera and making these things more through stop-motion.

Talk to Muren and you’ll understand what ILM is all about; taking on new challenges. By 1989, Muren decided he had pushed the old technology as far as it would go. He saw computer graphics(CG) technology as the wave of the future and took a year off to master it.

With CG technology, images can be scanned into a computer for processing, for example, and many separate shots can be combined into a single image. CG technology has now reached the point. Muren says, where special effects can be used to do just about anything--- so that movies can tell stories better than ever before. The huge success of Jurassic Park and its sequel. The Lost World – the stars of which were computer –generated dinosaurs--- suggests that this may very well be true.

Before a new type of airplane goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others.

The first is called the “tank test”. A modern airplane must fly very high in the shy. Air must be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure on a small window is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to fail, the plane would explode in the sky. To test the structure of the plane, the plane is lowered into a huge tank or container of water. Then it is filled with air, the pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is high up in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then that part is made stronger.

The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flights in the air. The test pilot must find out exactly what happens when the engines are all shut off at once. The plane begins to fall like a stone. it is the pilot’s job to find out how he can get control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.

66. What will happen to the plane under the “tank test”?

  A. It will be broken B. It will be made stronger

  C. It will be filled with water D. It will be tested by pilots.

67. According to the text, why are test flights most dangerous.?

  A. The plane may explode in the air

  B. The pilot may lose control of the plane

  C. The engines may be damaged

  D. Too much air may get into the plane

68. What might be the most suitable title for the text?

  A. Tw Important Tests on Airplanes

  B. The Important of Flying Safely

  C. The Danger of Testing Airplane

  D. How Airplanes Are Made and Tested

                   D

Years ago, I was taking an algebra class over the summer, and had a teacher who liked to reminisce(缅怀) about his past with funny stories. He related that he had been a math teacher in the Air Force, where it was his duty to force sleepy young recruits(新兵) to stay awake for an hour of math at 8:00 in the morning in a large, warm, dimly-lit auditorium. One day, he came into the auditorium and saw his class even sleepier and less attentive than usual, he realized that something drastic would have to be done.

Now this classroom was very old, and the blackboards, which had been nailed on to the walls with old black iron nails, had become loose over the years. As a result, these black nails jutted almost invisibly from the blackboard and this teacher kept banging his hands on them while erasing the board. He decided to put them to good use.

With enough of a flourish to guarantee the class’s attention, he went to the front to the room, near one edge of the board. Then, clearing his throat, he drew a coat hook right near one of the protruding nails. He proceeded to hang his coat and hat on the hook that he had drawn in chalk (really on the nail, of course). Then he went on to give that day’s lecture. He told us that the entire class had their eyes to the front of the room throughout the lecture. He didn’t know if they’d heard a single world he’d said, but at least they looked attentive.

At the end of the class, the lecturer would usually leave by a small door near the blackboards, while the class would leave through the large doors at the back of the hall. When class was over, he took his coat and hat, erased the coat hook, and left through the small door—and was followed by the entire class, lining up to go past the blackboard to see how he’d done it !

69. What duty did the math teacher have when working in the Air Force?

  A. He kept new recruits to do lots of military exercises.

  B. He urged new recruits to do lots of math exercises.

  C. He was responsible for calling back past funny stories

  D. He urged new recruits to stay awake when giving his lectures.

70. The reason that his class focused their eyes upon the front of the room was ______.

  A. his lecture that day was interesting and attractive

  B. they knew he was usually a humorous teacher.

  C. they didn’t understand why he could hang his coat and hat on the coat hook drawn in chalk on the blackboard

  D. their math teacher was crazy

71. Why did his class follow him to leave through the small door?

  A. Because the large doors are closed.

  B. Because they all wanted to dig into the truth.

  C. because they all wanted to try leaving through the small door.

  D. Because they all wanted to have a look at the nail on the blackboard.

72. What could be inferred from this passage about the math teacher?

  A. He was very good at math .

  B. He was a very kind man .

  C. His lecture was very wonderful to lure his class’s attention.

  D. He was a humorous and interesting man .

I will spend this summer holiday in the countryside. Although the city is modern and convenient, there are still some problems, such as air pollutions, crowdedness and noise. In the countryside, I can enjoy a comfortable and quiet life. There the air is fresh and the water is clean. Trees are green and birds are singing . I can also go boating and swimming in the lake. What’s more, I can climb the hills. All this will be interesting and good for my health. Above all, I can learn more about nature. So I want to go to the countryside for a change. I’m looking forward to the coming of my summer holiday.
