第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题:每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy.Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs.Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs.Even judges are softer on attractive defendants. But in the executive(主管的) circle, beauty can become a liability

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men, effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives.Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes.

Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine(女性的) and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the “manly” qualities required.

This is true even in politics.“When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently,” say Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates(候选人).She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest vote.

56.The word “liability” most probably means

   A.disadvantage B.advantage C.misfortune D.trouble

57.In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness

A.makes women look more honest and capable

   B.strengthens the feminine qualities required

   C.is of great importance

D.often enables women to succeed quickly

58.Bowman’s experiment shows that when it comes to politics, attractiveness

A.turns out to be a disadvantage to men

B.is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women

   C.affects men and women alike

D.had as little effect on men as on women

59.It can be inferred from the passage that people’s views on beauty are often

   A.practical B.supportive C.old-fashioned D.one-side

B

Jim Ryun once said, “Motivation(动力) is what gets you started.Habit is what keeps you going.”

Our motivation in life reflects with desire or interest. But it is habits and integrity(正直、诚实) that keep people going when times get tough.

Jon Endicott, vice principal, said, “Preparing for study skills is important,” in Mary Kneefel’s article, Emotional Intelligence—key to life on November 15,2004.“But we also need to look at emotional intelligence.”

“According to psychologists Salovey and Mayer, who coined the term, emotions intelligence is the ability to perceive(发觉), understand emotions and regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth.”

Motivation and emotions are what to make people want to grow in school, music, sports, etc.

Kobe Bryant, a NBA basketball star, is one of the world’s best basketball players and the biggest role models. He has a lot of confidence and is not afraid to shoot a basket.

This attitude he has on the basketball court reflects the discipline he places on himself and the motivation he cultivates, so he can obtain that discipline.

Bryant is not afraid to shoot a basket, and the confidence he has on the basketball court reflects his goals and priorities(重点) in life.If you have strong aspirations and are emotionally motivated, almost anything can happen.

C

John Steinbeck once said, “All Americans believe they are born fishermen. For a man to admit to a distaste in fishing would be like denouncing(公开指责) mother-love or hating moonlight.”

I can’t say that I’m the biggest John Steinbeck fan.Actually, the only thing I can ever remember reading by him was “The pearl” when I was in middle school, but I couldn’t agree more with the man when it comes to fishing.Whether I am on a boat in the middle of the Lay Lake, fishing off the shores of the Florida Keys for tarpon(大海鲢) or catching rainbow trout(生鲭鱼) in the Shoshone River of Wyoming.Fishing is my life.

According to the American Sports Fishing Association, the fishing industry brings in more than $116 billion per year from fishermen across the country.

Though a beautiful picture to imagine, fishing is much more than that.Fishing is a way of life from many people and a way to escape everyday stress(压力).Being a fisherman makes me a member of a wonderful group of people extending to all walks of life.Even President Bush can be found fishing on his farm in Texas with his good friend Roland Martin when the job gets too stressful.

I can remember fishing with my grandfather when I was 5 years old on his boat at Lake Mitchell.Although I didn’t understand what I was doing, I did know that my grandfather was happy and that made me happy.Since then I’ve spent the past 16 years on the rivers and lakes of Alabama.

After days of practice, before and after work, I slowly developed an understanding of fishing. My boss, Ric Horst, took me back to the Shoshone, and I managed to bring in a 19-inch cutthroat trout.Fishing with Ric was a life-changing experience for me.He not only showed me how to fish correctly, but also told me how fishing could be a way to escape your problems.

Since then, prime-time(黄金时间) season seems to take forever to arrive.

Now, with the ending of February and beginning of March in sight, the excitement of heading out to Lake Tuscaloosa or Lake Lurleen before classes and catching something has finally returned.

64.What John Steinbeck said in the first paragraph implies that

A.Americans are believed to be the offspring(后代) of fishermen

B.it is unthinkable for an American to admit his dislike of fishing

C.all Americans are expert at fishing

D.those who dislike fishing would not love their mother

65.The writer came to understand the real meaning of fishing

A.when he was reading “The pearl” by John Steinbeck

B.when he went fishing with his grandfather at Lake Mitchell

C.after he had spent 16 years on the rivers and lakes of Alabama

D.after he went fishing with his boss, Ric Horst on the Shoshone

66.What can be inferred from the text?

A.The author is at most 21 years old.

B.The author regards fishing as a very important part in his life.

C.The author agreed with John Steinbeck the most when he was in middle school.

D.President Bush often goes fishing in public in order to collect ideas for his job.

67.What is the purpose of the writing?

A.To describe the writer’s experience and understanding of fishing.

B.To explain the reason why so many Americans like fishing.

C.To make others understand the industry of fishing.

D.To express his opinions about fishing in different time of the year.

The human body is a living machine, and, like all machines, it needs fuel to supply it with energy. This is provided by the food we eat.But how much do we need to stay healthy?

The energy value of food is usually measured in calories.A calorie is amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1kg of water by 1℃.The number of calories people need per day is different, as the first chart below shows. Also, the number of calories you use at any moment normally depends on the activity you are in, for example, you need more calories for standing than for sitting, more for running than for walking, and so on.

The energy in food is mainly in the form of three kinds of chemical materials—carbohydrate(糖类), protein(蛋白质), and fat.Carbohydrate provides 3·8 Cal/gm (calories per gram) of energy, protein 4·0 Cal/gm and fat 8·8 Cal/gm.Each food contains different amounts of these materials, as the second chart shows.

Most British telephone cards are just plain green, but card collecting is becoming a popular hobby in Britain, and collectors even have their own magazine, International Telephone Cards. One reason for their interests is that cards from around the world come in a wide variety of different and often very attractive design. There are 100,000 different cards in Japan alone, and there you can put your own design onto a bank card simply by using a photograph or a business card.

The first telephone cards, produced in 1976, were Italian.Five years later the first British telephone cards appeared, and now you can buy cards in more than a hundred countries.People usually start collecting cards because they are attractive, small and light, and they do not need much space. It is also a cheap hobby for beginners, although for some people it becomes a serious business. In Paris, for example, there is a market where you can buy only telephone cards, and some French cards cost up to 4,000 pounds. The fist Japanese card has value of about 28,000 pounds. Most people only see cards with prices like these in their collectors’ magazine.

Dear John,

Very pleased to know that you are coming to study in Beijing and it is really a good idea to improve your Chinese before the new term begins next September.

Here is an introduction to a school of Chinese. Compared with the other schools, I think it is a suitable one that you can go to. First, it is very convenient for you to get there by No. 16 bus. Next, the classes are very small. There are 24 teaching hours a week. After class, you can enjoy sports and activities with other students. Staying with a Chinese family will provide you with a chance to practise your Chinese and know more about the Chinese family life. The time will suit you and only 200 yuan is paid per month. I’ll get in touch with them if you are interested in this school.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

                              Yours,

                              Li Hua
