第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, poor land must be cultivated and good land made full use of. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more opportunities for specialization such as ports, roads, and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify(给……以正当理由) them.

One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In a developing country where a vastly expanding population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of the government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for products. When the pressure of the population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.

56.According to the first paragraph, a smaller population may mean_______ if land is limited.

A.lower productivity, and a lower average income

B.lower productivity, but a higher average income

C.higher productivity, and a higher average income

D.higher productivity, but a lower average income

57.In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birthrate_______

 A.goes up B.goes down C.remains stable   D.is limited

58,It is not easy to carry out a worldwide birth-control program because_________.

A.there are too many underdeveloped countries in the world

B.developing countries are short of food and raw materials

C.even developed countries may have some complex problems of population

D.different government show quite opposite views to the population

59.What is the passage mainly about?

A.A large population or a small population.

 B.The main subject of discussion.

C.The difficulties of carrying out a program.

D.Advantages and disadvantages of a large population.

Photograph is an important item people take on holiday, but in many cases their passports remind people just how far they have let themselves go.

A survey of 5000 Europeans has confirmed that Britons are among the most embarrassed when it comes to showing their passport pictures to other people. One in six would rather spill food down their clothes or discover that their ties were undone than show a work colleague their unpleasant photographs.

The report from the printer company Lexmark International said that almost one in five Britons even hid their passport pictures from their family. Most spent a maximum of 10 minutes getting the photograph taken. The nation’s nature is quite different, compared with the proud French, who spent an hour photographing the perfect passport portraits. The confident Spanish and Portuguese did not spend long in the photo studio: 90 percent of them accepted the first photographs taken, while the Finnish were more likely to change their hairstyle every year and get stopped at immigration control.

Britons were second only to Italians, 21 percent of whom said, either through extreme pride or shyness, that they were ashamed of their pictures. The next most ashamed were passport holders in Belgium, Portugal and Finland, with 12, 11 and 8 percent separately embarrassed of their photographs.

The poll(民意测验) was topped by Norwegians, with 98 percent of them saying they were happy with how they look in their passports.

Paul Kreutzer, a Lexmark spokesman, said yesterday:“We are a nation that doesn’t like to show off or flash things around. Britons are still a lot more conservative(保守) than our European neighbours. We could look a lot better if we took more time. If you take them at home with a digital camera, you can get a much better picture. Anyway, we’ve had great fun examining the research, it’s amazing how different nationalities view their passports.”

60.The people from _______ were the least embarrassed of their passport photographs.

Finland B. Belgium C.Italy D.Norway

61.From the passage we can know that __________________.

A.the Finnish often meet some trouble at the immigration control because of hairstyle change.

 B. Britons look more unpleasant than their European neighbours.

C.the Spanish and Portuguese are more conservative than Britons.

D.the French are the most proud people in Europe.

62.What would properly be the best title of the passage?

 A.Photogragh and Passport

 B.Passport and pride

 C.Photogragh and Different Nationalities

D.An Important Item Taken on Holiday

63.From the passage we may guess that Paul Kreutzer, the Lexmark spokesman is from_____.

 A.the USA B.the UK C.France D.Finland

                C

Living things are divided into two kingdoms-plants and animals. In order to stay alive they require energy, and this comes from food. It is because plants and animals feed in different ways that we can tell them apart. Plants can actually make their own food, then use it to live and grow on. It comes from the gas carbon dioxide in the air, and water from the ground. As this is all around them plants do not need to move. They have the special chemical chlorophyll in their leaves and with this they change the carbon dioxide and water into food such as sugar and starch. Leaves are the great chemical factories of nature.

Animals have no chlorophyll and cannot make food, but must get it from plants. This is why they need to move about—to find food. They must also have a nervous system for smelling, seeing, hearing, tasting and touching. This helps them find their way about and know what is going on around them. Because plant food is a solid, animals need a mouth to take it in. Food is then broken up by the teeth or beak, and digested in the food canal by juices so that it can be carried away and stored up in fat or in the liver. Later it can be used as“fuel”for growing and moving about. Any unused food or waste is passed out of the body.

Waste from animal may be useful as a fertilizer by making the soil in which plants grow richer and more fruitful. Also, when animals or plants die they are broken up by bacteria and what is left helps to improve the soil. In this way, by making food out of air and water, plants give life to animals. Then animals and plants put back food into soil when they die.

Since no animal lives for ever, it must have young to carry on its kind:this is called reproduction, The young of animals are either born or hatched from eggs. In this way we can recognize an animal——it moves and grows, it senses things, it feeds and digests with a mouth and food passage, it passes out waste food and poisons and it reproduces. The remarkable thing is that all animals do these things in spite of the great variety of shapes and sizes, and different ways of living.

64.With the following matter except_______, plants can make their own food which they use to live and grow on.

 A.chlorophyll            B.carbon dioxide

 C.water from the ground D.sugar

65.What is the nervous system of animals used to do according to the passage?

 A. a. c. d. B.a. c. e. C.c. d. e. D.a. b. d.

I’m usually fairly sceptical about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today’s children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.

Why are America’s kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation(隔离)brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.

Considering that we can’t turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope(应付).

At the top of the list is nurturing(培育)a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress.

To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.

Limit the amount of virtual(虚拟的)violence your children are exposed to. It’s not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.

Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.

Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn’t have to ruin your life.

71.The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people’s state of mind are_____.

 A.surprising B.confusing C. illogical D. questionable

72.What does the author means by saying“we can’t turn the clock back”(Para. 3)?

 A. It’s impossible to slow down the pace of change.

 B. The social reality children are facing cannot be forgotten.

 C. Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.

 D. It’s impossible to forget the past.

73.According to the analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill 50 years ago_______.

 A. probably suffered less from anxiety

 B. were probably less self-centered

 C. were less isolated physically

 D. were considered less individualistic

74.The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is______.

 A. to provide them with a safer environment

 B. to lower their expectations for them

 C. to get them more involved socially

 D. to set a good model for them to follow

75.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Sometimes local news about crimes and murder also affects children a little.

B. TV and computer play an important role in isolating children from the real world.

C. To children, anxiety is completely avoidable.

D. Exercise does not help to lessen children’s anxiety.

However, other students think that the program misleads the youth to some degree, which does more harm than good to them. Some young people may feel that success comes from luck but not hard work. Besides, it is misunderstood that personality just means different behaviour and appearance from others.

Although I am for such a program, it should not go so far as to affect young people’s normal life and learning.

Best wishes. Looking forward to your opinion.

Yours truly,
