Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human condition is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful(有压力的) conditions.Social support makes up of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems.People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties.Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways.First, friends, relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us.Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties.Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them.Third,we typically find social companionship supportive.Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support money aid, material resources, and needed services—that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.

At Westlake College, more than 90 percent of the students use computers, either desktop or laptop, but the laptop users can work and study in any of the places.Just as one of the Westlake teachers said, “ Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we're giving students a window on the world.”

Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father,“But,dad, you can't be healthy if you're dead.” Dad,in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run,had forgotten to wear his safety belt—a mistake 75% of the US population make every day.The big question is why there have been myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago.The following are three of the most common.

Myth Number One: It's best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident.

Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you'll have traveled through a windshield (挡风玻璃) or door to do it.Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in case where people are “thrown clear”.

Myth Number Two: Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.

Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious(昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents.People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.

Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren't needed at speed of less than 30 miles per hour(mph).

Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other,an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

68.Why did Elizabeth say to her father,“But,dad, you can't be healthy if you're dead”?

A.He was driving at great speed.

B.He was running across the street.

C.He didn't have his safety belt on.

D.He didn't take his medicine on time.

69.The reason Father was in a hurry to get home was that he ____________.

A.wasn't feeling well

B.hated to drive in the dark

C.wanted to take some exercise

D.didn't want to be caught by the police

70.According to the text,to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident is very dangerous because you ____________ .

A.may be knocked down by other cars

B.may get seriously hurt being thrown out of the car

C.may find it impossible to get away from the seat

D.may get caught in the car door

71.Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe ____________ .

A.the belt prevents them from escaping in an accident

B.they will be unable to think clearly in an accident

C.they will be caught when help comes

D.cars catch fire easily

A wind tunnel is a device used for testing airplanes or plane models.

In a wind tunnel air is blown over an airplane or a model placed in a test section.Wind tunnel test sections are different in size depending on airflow speed requirements. Some low-speed tunnels have test sections large enough for a complete small airplane. In the very high-speed tunnels used for space testing, however, the model may be as small as a pencil.

There are two methods of feeding air to the test section. In the continuous flow tunnel air-flow is produced by electric fans.It is forced through the tunnel to the test section, then through another tunnel section back to the starting point for refuse.

The other method involves storing high-pressure air in a box, sending it out by a control device to pass through the tunnel and test section into another box. This type of system is generally used for a very short period of high-speed airflow.

Wind tunnels are usually used to test airplanes before they are flown.Problems in an airplane can be found when it meets the high-speed airflow in the tunnels. For instance,if the wings are built so that they would weaken at high speeds, this fact can be discovered in the tunnel, saving many lives and millions of dollars.

In a wild tunnel scientists also find out how different planes will act at different speeds. They find out such things as how smoothly an airplane is flown, how slowly a plane can fly before it starts to drop, and how fast it can climb.

72.Some wind tunnel sections are larger than others because ____________.

A.they are used for larger planes

B.stronger wind can be produced in them

C.they are built to meet higher requirements

D.the wind used in them flows at a lower speed

73.What does the underlined part “this fact” refer to?

A.The wings are not good enough.

B.It costs a lot to test a plane.

C.Some problems are found about the plane.

D.Many people will die in a plane accident.

74.A wind tunnel can be used to find out____________.

A.how fast a plane can rise

B.how smooth a plane's surfaces are

C.if a plane can land in windy and rainy weather

D.if a plane will drop when flying at a low height

75.The writer wrote the passage mainly to explain ____________ .

A.how a plane is built

B.how a plane can be tested

C.the relation between the wind and speed

D.it is difficult to test a plane

Much of our good health depends on the cooperation between substances .When they work together, chemical reactions take place smoothly. Body systems are kept in balance .Some of the most important helpers in the job of good health are the substances we call vitamins.

Vitamin A is needed to produce a light-sensitive substance in the eyes. People who do not get enough vitamin A cannot see well in the dark. The best source of vitamin A is fish liver oil. It also is found in the yellow part of eggs .In addition, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots and other darkly colored fruits and vegetables contain substances that the body can change into vitamin A.

Vitamin B-1 is also called thiamine. It changes starchy foods into energy. It also helps the heart and nervous system work smoothly. Without it, we would be weak and would not grow .Thiamine is found not just in whole grains like brown rice, but also in other foods. These include beans and peas, nuts and meat and fish.

Vitamin B-12 is needed so folic acid can do its work. Together, they help produce red blood cells. Without them ,a person suffers from anemia (贫血).Vitamin B-12 is found naturally in foods such as eggs, meat, fish and milk products.

Vitamin C is necessary for strong bones and teeth, and for healthy blood vessels. It also helps wounds heal quickly. The body stores very little vitamin C .So we must get it every day in foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes and uncooked cabbage.
