第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D中选出最佳选项)

A

The famous American gorilla(大猩猩) expert Diane Fossey had a completely new way to study gorillas — she pretended to be one of them. She copied their actions and way of life — eating plants and getting down on her hands and knees to walk the way a gorilla does. It was a new relationship.

Diane Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 and her story was made into the popular film Gorillas in the Mist. It was a long way from King Kong, which is about a gorilla as a monster (a frightening animal), and helped to show a new idea: the real monster is man, while the gorilla is to be admired.

Today there are thought to be around 48,000 lowland gorillas and maybe 400—450 mountain gorillas in the wild. From the Congo in West Africa, to Rwanda and Uganda further east, they are endangered by hunting and by the cutting down of their forest homes.

Some time ago, I found in my letterbox a little magazine from the World Wide Fund for Nature. It had two photos side by side. One was of a young gorilla. “This is a species of mammal(哺乳类动物),” said the words below it. “It is being destroyed by man. We must save it for our own good.” The other photo showed a human baby. The words also read, “This is a species of mammal,” but then went on: “It is the most destructive(破坏性的) on earth. We must retrain it for its own good.”

56. The text mainly talks about _____.

A. Diane Fossey        B. the gorillas in Rwanda

C. the protection of the gorillas D. the film Gorillas in the Mist

57. We can learn from the text that _____.

A. Gorillas in the mist was based Fossey’s experiences

B. Lowland gorillas live longer than mountain gorillas

C. King Kong showed us that a gorilla is admirable

D. Diane Fossey was murdered by a gorilla

58. What message can we get from the two photos in the magazine?

A. Gorillas are man’s close friends.

B. Both man and the gorilla need to be saved.

C. Young gorillas are as lovely as human babies.

D. Man should live peacefully with the gorilla.

B

As we know, it is very important that a firm should pay attention to the training of its staff as there exist many weak points in its various departments. Staff training must have a purpose, which I defined(解释) when a firm considers its training needs, which are in turn based on job descriptions and job specifications.

A job description should give details of the performance that is required for a particular job, and a job specification should give information about the behaviour, knowledge and skills that are expected of an employee who works in it. When all of this has been collected, it is possible to make a training specification. This specifies that the training department must teach for the successful performance of the job, and also the best methods to use in the training period.

There are many different training methods, and there are advantages and disadvantages of all of them. Successful training performances depend on an understanding of the difference between learning about skills and training in using them. It is frequently said that  learning about skills takes place “off the job” in classroom, but training in using these skills takes place “on the job,” by means of such activities as practice in the workshop.

It’s always difficult to evaluate the costs of a training programme. The success of such a programme depends not only on the methods used but also on the quality of the staff who do the training. The evaluation of management training is much more complex than that.

59.To be successful in our training programme, we must understand the difference between    .

A.a job description and a job specification

B.what is taught, and how it is taught

C.the costs and the quality of the programme

D.the training contents and training in using

60.According to passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.As there exist weak points in different departments of a firm, the training of its staff is

highly necessary.

B.A training specification is based on the information collected from a job description and a job specification.

C.Training in using skills and learning about skills usually do not happen at the same time.

D.It’s easier to evaluate management training than to evaluate the training of workers and technicians.

61.The best title for the passage might be .

    A.Staff training and its evaluation

    B.A successful training programme

C.How to describe and specify a job

D.The importance of training the staff

62.From the passage we know the success of a training programme lies in .

A.the training methods and the quality of the training staff

B.the performance of the trainees in the programme

C.the places where the training programmes take place

D.the way to evaluate the training programme

C

The Americans believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollywood comedy(喜剧), that is exactly what happens.

Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical(典型的) American way of life, except for one thing-he looks exactly like the President, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nation’s leader is that he is very nice!

The president has started using look-alikes during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country” by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever.

Director Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive comedy about an ordinary man in extraordinary situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic(经典).

The film is 100% American. However, if you’ve ever felt that anybody could do a better job running the country than the people in power, then you’ll enjoy Dave!

63. What is the purpose of the text?

A. To tell the reader about the American government.

B. To discus the Americans’ ideas about the President.

C. To make a comparison between Dave and other films.

D. To introduce a new film to the reader.

64. Who plays the role of the President in the film?

A. Sigourney Weaver. B. Kevin Kline. C. Bill Mitchell. D. Ivan Reitman.

65. The underlined word “one” in the 3rd paragraph refers to _____.

A. the President B. the director C. an actor D. a look-alike

66. Which of the following is best supported by the text?

A. The author makes fun of the President.

B. The author thinks highly of the film.

C. The author is a fan of Hollywood comedies.

D. The author wishes to become the American President.

Like many lovers of books, Mary and her husband, Richard Goldman, seldom walked past a bookstore without stopping to look inside. They often talked of opening their own store one day.

When Mary was hospitalized with heart trouble in 1989, they decided it was time to get serious. Richard, who worked for a business company, was eager to work for himself, and Mary needed to slow down from her demanding job.

They started by talking to bookstore owners and researching the industry. “We knew it had to be a specialty store because we couldn’t match the big chains dollar for dollar,” says Mary. One figure caught her attention: She’d read somewhere that roughly 20 percent of books sold were mysteries (推理小说), and many buyers spent more $300 a year on books. She and Richard were themselves mystery readers.

On Halloween 1992, they opened the Mystery Lovers Bookshop and Café near their home. With three children in college, the couple could not spend all the family’s money to start a shop. To cover the $100,000 cost, they drew some of their savings, borrowed from relatives and from an bank.

The store merely broke even in its first year, with only $120,000 in sales. But Mary was always coming up with new ways to attract customers. The shop had a coffee bar and it offered gifts to mystery lovers and served dinners for book clubs that met in the store. She also invited dozens of writers to discuss their stories.

Today Mystery Lovers makes sales of about $420,000 a year. After paying taxes, business costs and the six part-time sales clerks, Richard and Mary together earn about $34,000.

“The job you love may not go hand in hand with a million-dollar income,” says Richard. “This has always been about an enjoyable life for ourselves, not about making a lot of money.”

72. When Mary was in hospital, the couple realized that ____.

A. they had to put their plan into practice

B. health was more important than wealth

C. heart trouble was a serious illness

D. they both needed to stop working

A. to study industrial management

B. to buy and read more mystery books

C. to do market research on book business

D. to work harder to save money for the bookstore

74. How did their bookstore do in the first year?

A. They had to borrow money to keep it going.

B. They made just enough to cover all the costs.

C. They succeeded in earning a lot of money.

D. They failed though they worked hard.

75. According to Richard, the main purpose of running the bookstore is _____.

A. to pay for their children’s education B. to get to know more writers

C. to set up more bookstores D. to do what they like to do

One possible version:

Dear Miss Morgan,

I am so sorry that I won’t be able to attend the lecture on American history tomorrow afternoon. My uncle is returning home from France, and I have promised to meet him at the airport at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon.

I am very much interested in American society and history. I wonder if it is possible for the talk to be recorded, and if so, could I borrow the tape? It would mean a great deal to me to listen to the tape and learn what is covered in the talk.

                  Yours sincerely
