Women turn to online shopping
Women have jumped ahead of men for the first time in using.the Internet to do their holiday shopping, according to a study published last week in the US.
For Years men have been more likely to shop on the Internet than women, but during the 2004 holiday season 58 percent of those making online purchases were women.
“It shows how mainstream the Internet is becoming”,said Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project group, which carried out the study.
Rainie said it was only a matter of time before women shoppers caught up with men. This is because women traditionally make decisions about spending.
Users were more likely to shop online to save time.Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 were responsible for some of the most dramatic(显著的)increases in the online gift-buying population this time around.
However,three-quarters of the US Internet users did not buy holiday gifts online in 2004.They worried about credit card security,or just compared online prices with off-line prices, then dashed off to the shops to get the best deals.
“But even if shoppers don’t buy online, websites are becoming promotion tools for stores,”said Dan Hess, vice president of ComScore Networks Inc.Hess said that actually most stores’ websites can make customers fully believe the security of their credit card numbers. And most are able to ensure that gifts arrive on time.

As is known to all, the organization and management of wages and salaries are very complex.
Generally speaking, the Accounts Department is responsible for calculations of pay, while the Personnel Department(人事部) is interested in discussions with the employees about pay.
If a firm wants to adopt a new wage and salary structure, it is essential that the firm should decide on a method of job evaluation(估价) and ways of measuring the performance of its employees. In order to be successful, that new pay structure will need agreement between Trade Unions and employers.
In job evaluation, all the requirements of each job are defined in a detailed job description. Each of those requirements is given a value, usually in “points”, which are added together to give a total value for the job. For middle and higher management, a special method is used to evaluate managers on their knowledge of the job, their responsibility, and their ability to solve problems.
Because of the difficulty in measuring management work, however, job grades for managers are often decided without reference to an evaluation system based on points.
In attempting to design a pay system, the Personnel Department should compare the value of each job with those in the job market. It should also consider economic factors such as the cost of living and the labor supply.
It is necessary that payment for a job should vary with any differences in the way that the job is performed. Where it is simply to measure the work done, as in the work done with the hands, monetary encouragement schemes are often chosen; for indirect workers, where measurement is difficult, methods of additional payments are employed.
64. If a firm wants to establish a new pay structure, it is necessary to get the agreement between________.
A. the Trade Unions and the Personnel Department
B. the Personnel Department and the Accounts Department
C. the employees and the Trade Unions.
D. the employers and the Trade Unions
65. Methods of additional payments are adopted for indirect workers because________.
A. their work is not important B. they have low wages
C. the measurement of their work is difficult
D. the company does not have enough money
66. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?
A. In every company only the Accounts Department takes charge of the management of wages and salaries.
B. Management work and the job done by workers can use the same evaluation system.
C. If a job is done differently, the payment for the job should be different too.
D. An evaluation system based on points is usually used to evaluate management work.
67. The main purpose of the passage is to________.
A. explain the responsibilities of both the Accounts Department and the Personnel Department.
B. explain not to evaluate the performance of a job by points
C. tell readers how a company should adopt a new payment system
D. convince (使确信) readers that management work is more difficult to evaluate than the work done by workers

Does a drink a day keep heart attacks away? Over the past 20 years, numerous studies have found that moderate alcohol consumption, say, one or two beers, glasses of wine or cocktails daily helps to prevent coronary heart disease . Last week a report in the New England Journal of Medicine added strong new evidence in support of that theory. More important, the work provided the first solid indication of how alcohol works to protect the heart.
In the study, researchers from Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvad Medical School compared the drinking habits of 340 men and women who had suffered recent heart attack with those of healthy people of the same age and sex. The scientists found that people who sip one to three drinks a day are about half as likely to suffer heart attacks as nondrinkers are. The apparent source of the protection: those who drank alcohol had higher blood levels of high density lipoproteins, the so called good cholesterol, which is known to prevent heart disease.
As evidence has mounted, some doctors have begun recommending a daily drink for patients of heart diseases. But most physicians are not ready to recommend a regular happy hour for everyone. The risks of teetotalling (绝对戒酒 ) are nothing compared with the dangers of too much alcohol, including high blood pressure, strokes and liver troubles---not to mention violent behavior and traffic accident. Moreover, some studies suggest that even moderate drinking may increase the incidence of breast and colon cancer. Until there is evidence that the benefits of a daily dose of alcohol outweigh the risks, most people won’t be able to take a doctor’s prescription to the neighborhood bar or liquor store.
68. The medical article quoted in the first paragraph indicates________.
A. the way in which alcohol can help the heart.
B. how a couple of cocktails daily can stop heart problems
C. why alcoholic drinks are dangerous to one’s health
D. that reports on the advantages of alcohol were misled
69. Experiments showed that nondrinkers had___________.
A. Larger amounts of good cholesterol B. smaller amounts of good cholesterol
C. higher blood pressure D. lower blood pressure
70. According to the passage, moderate drinking_______.
A. is recommended by most doctors for heart patients
B. should be allowed on prescription
C. is still not medically advisable D. is not related to liver problems
71. The main theme of this passage is.
A. the change in recent drinking habits
B. the connection between cancer and alcohol
C. whether moderate drinkers outlive nondrinkers
D. whether alcohol may be good for one’s health

Over many years there has been an increase in the population of towns in many countries, as millions of people have moved from the villages in search of better jobs and facilities, in the hope of getting a higher standard of living. This development has led to huge expansion of towns both upwards into the sky and outwards into the surrounding countryside. In spite of all the efforts of movements and private business, many areas still suffer from a serious shortage of housing.
Now, a new idea has been put forward which will make use of areas which have no other obvious commercial potential. There are small lacks, disused docks and other areas of water, many of which can be found near, or even in the suburbs of big town.
A new style of construction has been designed which will provide a house for less than half the cost of the normal building. The main saving is, of course, the land. Because the new houses will float on water. There will be no need for foundation; instead the house will be built on a frame made of steel which is expected to cost about $ 5,000. Above this the builders will make a house with two, three or four bedrooms and all the usual modern conveniences, as well as a roof garden. Each house will be joined to the main services supplying water, gas and electricity and they will have a vacuum sewage disposal (真空污水处理) system. All the service links will have enough flexibility (灵活性) allow for small differences in the water level caused by wet and dry periods of weather.
The first house to be built are expected to cost between $ 20,000 and $ 30,000 according to size and it is already clear that there is a very good potential market for the new system. AS the cost is comparatively low, young people and common citizens would like to buy.
72.So many people have moved into towns chiefly because ________.
A .they hope to enjoy the basic facilities
B. they expect to live a better life
C .they want to contribute to the development of towns
D. there is a shortage of jobs in villages
73.What is the main advantage of the new idea?
A. It will help solve the housing shortage problem.
B. It will make use of areas of water.
C. It will provide jobs.
D. It will help develop the suburbs.
74. The new house will be built on ________.
A. waterside areas B. a store foundation
C. lakes and rivers D. a steel frame’
75. The price of the new house will ________.
A. encourage private and government builders
B. attract ordinary people in the towns to buy
C. vary in different areas according to the policy
D. benefit the housing market in the countryside

People should not be encouraged to use plastic bags.
Plastic bags are very popular in our daily life. People go shopping with plastic bags in free markets, super markets, or departments.
But plastic bags are one of the major pollutants. We can see littered plastic bags thrown everywhere, especially along the railways or highways, in the parks or in the rivers. Because plastics is not degradable, once it is thrown in the environment, it will exist for a long time and pollute soil and water. They are even dangerous to wildlife as thousands of sea animals are killed each year when they eat or are chocked by plastic bags. What’s more, “white pollution” creates a bad image for China.
So Government should make law to forbid the use of plastic bags in department stores and supermarkets. Meanwhile, people should be encouraged to replace them with paper bags or cloth bags.
