Alexis was hot and tired. With rage(愤怒) in her voice she shouted," Pull me up. I give up. I hate this. This is stupid!'' It was at that moment when Jason, the adviser on the trip ,looked at me and said," Ed, I'm going to go down and talk with her. "I then shouted down to Alexis," Hold on! You can do this. We know you can !"

Jason grasped another rope, put this climbing harness(系带)on and began to move down the cliff. Within moments Jason was beside Alexis. She had her cheek directly against the face of the rock with her feet barely resting on a small piece of the cliff that jetted outward.

Jason said to Alexis," I know that you have been on this cliff now for what seems like a long time. Your feet and fingers are cramping(痉挛)up and your forearms feel as though they are on fire. But, Alexis, you are strong. Look how far up you are already. You have taken one of the more difficult parts up the cliff. Alexis, look at the path you have taken."

At that moment, Alexis moved her cheek away from the rock face and looked down. The bright white chalk she used on her hands to give her a better hold, showed the path where her tired hands had moved her upward on the cliff. Jason was right. Alexis had taken the hardest way up the cliff. Jason then looked straight into Alexis' eyes and in a calm voice he said, "You are. not alone out here.      Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and gets answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on.

For most of the time this "conversation" goes on below the level of consciousness (意识). At times, however, we know it. This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is happening between expectations and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced out questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.

Different people deal with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page; others take off imaginatively from the words, translating, criticizing, analyzing (分析), and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text. The latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers.

There is another conversation which from our point of view is equally important, and that has not to do with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a "process" conversation just opposite a "content" conversation. It is concerned not with meaning but with the ways we use in reading. If we are an advanced reader our ability to hold a content conversation with a text is usually pretty well developed. It is not our ability that holds a process conversation. It is just this kind of conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level.

40.Reading as a kind of conversation between the reader and the text becomes conscious only

C.learn to use different ways in reading different texts

Perhaps the most famous theory, the study of body movement, was suggested by Professor Ray Birdwhistell. He believes that physical experience is often culturally programmed. In other words, we learn outlooks---we are not born with them. A baby has generally informed face features. A baby, according to Birdwhistell, learns where to set the eyebrows by looking at those around--- family and friends. This helps explain why the people of some areas of the US look so much alike. New Englanders or Southerners have certain common face features that cannot be explained by genetics (遗传学). The exact shape of the mouth is not set at birth, it is learned after. In fact, the final mouth shape is not formed until well after new teeth are set. For many, this can be well into grown-ups. A husband and wife together for a long time often come to look somewhat alike. We learn our looks from those around us. This is perhaps why in a single country there are areas where people smile most frequently. In New England they smile less, and in the western part of New York State still less. Many Southerners find cities such as New York cold and unfriendly, partly because people on Madison Avenue smile less than people on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. People in largely populated areas also smile and greet each other in public less than people in small towns do.

44. Ray Birdwhistell believes that physical appearance ______.

A. has little to do with culture B. has much to do with culture

C. is ever changing D. is different from place to place

A. before birth                   B. as soon as one’s teeth are newly set

C. sometime after new teeth are set D. around 15 years old

46. Ray Birdwhistell can tell what area of the United States a person is from by ______.

A. how much he or she laughs B. how he or she raises his or her eyebrows

C. what he or she likes best D. the way he or she talks

47. This passage might have been taken out of a book dealing with _______.

A. physics      B. chemistry C. biology D. none of the above

"The days when the management in Western companies presented gold watches to long-serving employees to thank them for loyal(忠诚的)service is now just a memory", says the Educational and Training Support Agency.

This new development in the shape and movement of the workforce throughout Western businesses is partly a result of the way that layers of middle management are being removed, leaving more workers responsible for their own development.

"Having workers take responsibility for their own development might be dramatic, but it is now the rule," says the Educational and Training Support Agency.

"Today, not only are workers more mobile, they have to run to keep up with changes," says the Government-founded agency. "It is no longer enough for a worker to gain a set of skills. Workers need the ability to react and get used to changes" This new system is also being pushed along by the way that industry is looking to its workers to renew their own skills. In the United States, some companies have contracts(合同) which repair their employees to show regularly how they have their skills up to date.

Contrary to this traditions of the past, employees in the West are now looking for autonomous learners as recruits, people who can develop their own continuing education beyond the school and university system. At the same time, businesses are developing the capacity for workers to take up autonomous learning on site in workplace, so that the skills and abilities of all workers in a business continue to improve and increase. "This, of course," says business theory, "will also improve the productivity(生产率) of the workers and therefore the profits of the company."
