These days , it seems that almost all of us are too serious . My older daughter often says to me . “Daddy , you’ve got that serious look again .” Even those of us who are committed to non-seriousness are probably too serious . People are frustrated” (沮丧的) and uptight (不安的)about virtually everything being five minutes late , seeing someone look at us wrong or say the wrong thing , paying bills waiting in line , overcooking a meal , making an honest mistake—you name it , we all lose perspective over it .

The root of being uptight is our unwillingness to accept life as being different , in any way , from cur expectations . Very simply ,we want things to be a certain way but they’re not a certain way . Life is simply as it is . Perhaps Benjamin Franklin said it best : “Our limited perspective , our hopes and fears become our measure of life , and when circumstances (环境) don’t fit our ideas , they become our difficulties .” We spend our lives warning things , people , and events to be just as we want them to be-and when they’re not , we fight and we suffer .

The first step in recovering from over-seriousness is to admit that you have a problem . You have to want to change , to become more easygoing . You have to see that your own uptightness is largely of your own creation—it’s composed of the way you have set up your life and the way you react to it .

The next step is to understand the link between your expectations and your frustration level . Whenever you expect something to be a certain way and it isn’t , you’re upset and you suffer . On the other hand , when you let go of your expectations , when you accept life as it is , you’re free .

A good exercise is to try to approach a single day without expectations . Don’t expect people to be friendly . When they’re not , you won’t be surprise or bothered ; if they are , you’ll be delighted . Don’t expect your day to be problem-free . Instead ,as problems come up , say to yourself, “Ah. another hurdle (障碍) to overcome .” As you approach your day in this manner you’ll notice how graceful life can be . Rather than fighting against life , You’ll be dancing with it . Pretty soon , with practice , you’ll lighten up your entire life. And when you lighten up , life is a lot more fun .

63.The underlined word “perspective” (Paragraph 1) probably means      .

   A.best hope B.proper judgment C.wrong guess D.firm belief

64.According to Benjamin Franklin we should      .

    A.be uptight about life

B.leave life simply as it is

C.fight and struggle to make the surroundings fit our ideas

D.accept life as being different from our expectations

65.Which of the following belongs to “over-seriousness”?

    A.To let go . B.To hold on .

C.To get used to life . D.To try to approach a single day without expectations

66.What might be the best title for the passage ?

    A.Lighten Up B.Cheer Up

C.Let Go of Your Expectations D.Never Be Too Serious

D

When you choose a freezer , remember it’s probably going to be with you for a long time . So it’s important to know which freezer is right for you needs .

First , decide if you want an upright or chest model . Uprights are more convenient . Their storage space is more accessible (可进入的) and they take up less floor area . However , chest models are more energy-efficient because less cold air escapes when they are open .

If you’re buying an upright , you’ll have to choose between frostless (无霜)or manual , defrost (解冻). Chest freezers are always manual . Frostless freezers automatically defrost at present intervals and remove the water . Manual models must be defrosted by hand every few months or whenever frost pile up to about a quarter of an inch.

To help your freezer reach a ripe old age , try to find a spot that’s cool YC, dry , and away from drafts (精棉). Drafts and heat will raise the freezer’s cabinet temperature , which makes it work harder to keep cool . That means wasted energy and a shortened life .

Dry air is important because high humidity (湿气) can cause the freezer to rust outside and frost up inside . With proper care , a freezer can serve you for 15 years or more . Regular cleaning and simple maintenance (保养) will help it maintain a zero-degree temperature and keep it smelling fresh and looking almost new .

Frostless models require less care than manual defrost freezers . The inside of a frostless unit should be washed periodically with warm water and baking soda or a mild soap , rinse , and dried .

Good habits go a long way toward a freezer that runs efficiently . To get the most from your freezer , check regularly to make sure it’s providing a true zero-degree temperature .

Keep the freezer at least three-quarters full . The emptier it gets , the more energy is wasted. If more than three pounds of food per cubic foot of storage space is added every 24 hours , the resulting high or low temperature can damage the food .

67.Why are uprights more convenient as suggested by the passage ?

    A.Because they defrost automatically .

B.Because they occupy less floor area .

C.Because they always keep the right temperature .

D.Because they can serve you for 15 years .

68.What can we learn from this passage ?

A.It is more important to keep the freezer at the temperature of zero-degree .

B.It is a challenging task to have your freezer serve you for 15 years or more .

C.You don’t have to worry about defrosting if you choose a chest freezer .

D.The opening of freezers has nothing to do with energy-saving .

69.According to the passage , choosing the best place for your freezer means      .

A.putting it in an unheated garage if possible

B.locating it near a sink if it is a manual-defrosted model

C.trying to keep it away from heat , drafts , and humidity

D.locating it as close as possible to the kitchen door

70.In order to get the best results , you should      .

A.use cool water to wash the inside of frostless models

B.keep the freezer at least 75% full

C.add three pounds of food every 24 hours

D.put your freezer in a garage with a strong floor

71.Which statement best describes the main idea of the passage ?

A.It tells the most economical ways to use a freezer .

    B.It explains how to defrost a manual-defrosted freezer .

C.It introduces the advantages and disadvantages of two kinds of freezers .

D.It gives useful advice on how to choose and maintain a freezer .

“Placebo” is a Latin word . It means “I shall please.” And , sometimes , it just might .

When scientists want to test a new drug , they usually divide a large number of people into two groups . One group takes the medicine ; the other takes a substance known as a placebo . It may contain nothing more than sugar . The people do not know which pill they are taking —the active one or the inactive one . In this kind of experiment , the medicine must perform better than the placebo to prove it is effective .

Yet people who take a placebo sometimes experience improvements in their health . This is known as the “placebo effect”, the effect of something that is not supposed to have any effect .Some doctors even use the placebo effect in their treatments . They might tell patients that a new drug will stop their pain . The patient does not know that the pills are inactive . The patient takes the pills and later tells the doctor that the pain is gone .

Now , research in Sweden suggests that placebo treatments can also reduce the emotional effects of unpleasant experiences . The effects in the brain were similar to those seen when placebos have been used to ease pain . The researchers say that in both cases , expectations of improvement are a major influence on the effectiveness of placebos .

Predrag Petrovic of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm led the study . The findings appeared in the publication Neuron.

An influential study on placebos appeared in nineteen fifty-five . It said treatment with a placebo made patients feel better thirty-five percent of the time . But in two thousand –one , Danish researchers reported that they had examined more than one hundred studies . They found little evidence of healing as a result of placebos .

72.Why is “a placebo” used in the experiment ?

A.To test which medicine is active and which is inactive .

B.To compare a new drug to an existing drug .

C.To prove how active the “placebo effect” is .

D.To determine the effectiveness of a medicinal drug .

73.According to research in Sweden , the placebo can reduce the patient’s pain mainly because

        .

A.the pill is very effective B.the pill can please them

C.they expect the improvement greatly D.they believe in the doctors

74.The figure “nineteen fifty-five” (in Paragraph 6 ) is probably

A.the page of a magazine in Stockholm

B.the number of patients involved in the experiment

C.they year when the findings were published

Ⅵ.书面表达:

Possible version :

Dear Editors of China Daily ,

Recently our class held a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of advertisements .

Daily life needs advertisements because they can offer information on goods , services , culture , employment and so on . With advertisements , customers can save a lot of time in shopping . Advertisements also help factories or service providers find their market . In a word, advertisements have many advantages .

However , we also find advertisements a waster of time when we don’t need them , for example , when watching TV programs . To make things worse , some advertisements mislead and cheat consumers . Furthermore , huge advertising expenses are shared by customers , which seems to be unfair .

Your truly ,

Li Hua .
