Tears are nature's way making us feel more comfortable. When our eyes are made uncomfortable by some small pieces of pollution, or when we are cutting onions, or when we are exhausted and "red-eyes" from overwork and late hours, tears form in our eyes to clean and refresh them.

Tears are also a sign of strong emotion. We cry when we are sad and we cry when we are happy.

And tears seem to be uniquely(独特) human. We know that animals also experience emotion-fear, pleasure, loneliness-but they do not shed(流)tears. From this we can conclude that tears are closely related to the emotional and biological make - up of the human species.

Biologically speaking, tears are actually drops of saline fluid, which is a little bit salty, produced by a gland(腺)in the body. Because salt is an important component, tears may actually constitute the most conclusive evidence that the human animal is the end product of a long evolutionary process that began in the sea.

And it is clear , that, in addition to(除了)the emotional benefits(好处), the shedding of tears has a specific biological function as well. Through tears, we can eliminate from our body certain chemicals which build up in response to stress and create a chemical imbalance in the body. Crying actually makes us feel better by correcting that imbalance and making us feel good again. And thus the emotional and the biological functions of tears merge (合并) into one and make us even more "human" than we would otherwise be.

56. According to the passage, human beings may have originated(起源于) in _______.

A. the sea B. the salt C. chemicals D. animals

57. Which of the following is NOT a function of tears?

A. Biological B. emotional C. Political D. Chemical

58. The underlined word" eliminate" probably means______.

A. add B. produce C. replace D. remove

59. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

A. Tears are a sign of strong emotion.

B. Tears are always making us feel more comfortable.

C. Tears are uniquely human.

D. Tears have certain biological function.

Beijing(AFP) Oct. 17, 2005---- China's second manned space mission returned safely to Earth early Monday after a successful five-day flight, in the latest chapter in China's ambitious drive to become a global space power.

Astronauts FeiJunlong and Nie Haisheng were given a clean bill of health after the re-entry capsule(返回舱)of their Shenzhou VI spacecraft glided to Earth on a parachute, ending up in Inner Mongolia, Xinhua news agency said.

"Our journey in space was very smooth, the living and working conditions inside the cabin were very good, our health is okay, thanks," Fei said on state television, with a radiant smile.

Appearing from the module, television pictures showed the two took a few seconds to adjust to the Earth's gravity, before being presented with bouquets of flowers and waving to assembled recovery teams and ground control staff.

Mission control declared the U5-hour space flight a success, Xinhua reported. A member of one of the recovery teams reported that the capsule landed upright after touching down at 4: 32 am (2032 GMT Sunday) , just one kilometer (1,100 yards) from the intended landing site, it added.

The flight was China's second-ever manned space mission following the historic Shenzhou V, which in October 2003 made China the third nation after the former Soviet Union and the United States to put a man into space.

During his 21-hour maiden flight in 2003, lone astronaut Yang Liwei never left his seat in the re-entry capsule nor took off his space suit. In contrast, Fei and Nie' s flight saw them leave the re-entry capsule and enter the orbital capsule(轨道舱), shedding their bulky suits and donning ordinary work clothes so they could move around easily.

Dispelling concerns that China could use space for military purposes, Premier Wen Jiabao said the purpose of the mission was to conduct experiments "entirely for peaceful purposes."

The Chinese government also hopes to use the manned space program to inspire patriotism(爱国精神) and instill a curiosity in science and technology amongst Chinese population.

60. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. China is much lack of patriotism.

B. China is the third country in the world to send men into space.

C. Not all the people have the great interest in science and technology.

D. China has successfully launched manned spacecrafts into space twice.

61. What can you infer from the passage?

A. It took Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng only two years to get prepared for the space ship.

B. Astronauts have to wear large and heavy space suits in space all the time.

C. China wants to catch up with the United States and Russian in the field of space and controls the profitable field.

D. China must have had a good mastery of space technology by now.

62. Which of the descriptions about the astronaut(s) is true?

A. Yang Liwei's health was not good enough to stay in space for more than one day.

B. Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng felt a little uneasy but soon got all right shortly afterlanding.

C. Yang Liwei occasionally left his seat in the re-entry capsule and took off his space suit.

D. Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng found the work clothes not so comfortable as their comparatively better-equipped space suits.

63. The report of the passage is ______.

A. objective B. subjective C. envious D. critical

64. The best title for the news is ________.

A. Competitive Taikonauts(中国宇航员) into Space

B. Chinese Triumph(胜利) on Oct. 12,2005.

There are many stereotypes (定型) about the character of people in various parts of the United States. In the Northeast and Midwest, people are said to be closed and private. In the South and West, however, they are often thought of as being more open and hospitable. Ask someone from St. Louis where the nearest sandwich, shop is, and he or she will politely give you directions. A New Yorker might eye you at first and after deciding it is safe to talk to you might give you a rather unexpected explanation. A person from Georgia might be very kind about directing you and even suggest some different places to eat. A Texan just might take you to the place and treat you to lunch.

American stereotypes are abundant. New Englanders are often thought of as being friendly and helpful. Southerners are known for their hospitality and warmth. People from the western part of the United States are often considered very outgoing. These differences in character can be traced to different factors such as climate, living conditions, and historical development.

When travelling from place to place, Americans themselves are often surprised at the differing degrees of friendliness in the United States.

69. The main idea of the passage is _______.

A. even Americans are surprised at the differences among themselves.

B. there are many differences in character in different parts of the USA.

C. there are many reasons for the differences.

British potato farmers were angry and wanted the expression "couch potato" to be taken out of the dictionary because it harmed the vegetable's image.

The British Potato Council wants the Oxford English Dictionary to replace the expression with the term " couch slouch", with protests being outside Parliament in London and the offices of Oxford University Press.

Kathryn Race, head of marketing at the Council, which represents some 4,000 planters and processors, said the group had complained in writing to the Oxford English Dictionary but had yet to receive a response.

"We are trying to get rid of the image that potatoes are bad for you," she said on Monday. "The potato has had its knocks in the past. Of course it is not the Oxford English Dictionary's fault but we want o use another term instead of ' couch potato' because potatoes are naturally healthy."

The Oxford English Dictionary says that "couch potato" began as American slang, meaning a person who spends his or her leisure time sitting around, especially watching television or video tapes."

The Potato Council says its campaign is supported by dieticians(饮食学家) who say the vegetable is low in fat an high in vitamin C. Supporting the campaign, famous cook Antony Worrall Thompson said the vegetable was one of Britain's favorite foods. "Not only are they healthy, they are also convenient and yummy(美味). Life without potato is like a sandwich without a filling." He said.

John Simpson, chief editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, said the dictionary first included the term " couch potato" in 1993 and said " dictionaries just reflect the words that society uses."

Simpson said words were never taken out of the full-length dictionary, which includes some 650,000 words in 20 volumes. But little-used words can be removed from the smaller dictionaries to make way for newer ones. "If society stops using words then they get taken out of the smaller dictionaries," he added.

The first known recorded use of the expression "couch potato" was in an article in Los Angeles Times, in 1979, Simpson said.

72. British potato farmers wanted to ________.

A. advertise their produces on television.

A. potatoes have had a bad image.

B. potatoes are good for people by nature.

C. potatoes sometimes do harm to people.

D. It's the dictionary's fault to use the expression " couch potato".

74. John Simpson thinks that ________.

A. the expression can be taken out of every kind of dictionary.

B. dictionaries do not necessarily reflect the words the society uses.

C. little-used words can remain in the smaller dictionaries.

D. it is impossible for them to take the expression out of the dictionary.
