The expression"burning your bridges"means acting in such a way that you destroy any chance of turning back or changing your decision.

You also tell him how glad you are to leave. With these words, you have burned your bridges. Your boss will never let you return to your old job.

The expression"burning your bridges"gets its name from similar expression,"burning your boats". This made it impossible to retreat a withdraw(撤 退).Only burning their boats, the invaders had burned their bridges home.

Most people who"burn their bridges"today do not belong to the military. But like those armies, they move in a new direction with no chance of turning back.

One part of a person's life ends suddenly, and another begins. Soon, the new life continues on a path of its own. All that remains of the old path are memories.

The Norwegian government is doing its best to keep the oil industry under control. A new law limits exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastline, production limits have been laid down, and oil companies have not been allowed to employ more than a limited number of foreign workers. But the oil industry has a way of getting over such problems, and few people believe that the movement will be able to hold things back for long.
Ever since the war, the movement has been carrying out a programme of development in the area north of the Arctic Circle. During the past few years this programme has had a great deal of success. Tromso has been built up into a local capital with a university, a large hospital and a healthy industry. But the oil industry has already started to draw people south, and within a few years the whole northern policy could be in ruins.
The effects of the oil industry would not be limited to the north, however. With nearly 100 per cent employment, everyone can see a situation developing in which the service industries and the tourist industry will lose most of their workers to the oil industry. Some smaller industries might even disappear altogether when it becomes cheaper to buy goods from abroad.

63.The Norwegian Government would prefer the oil industry to .

A.provide more jobs for foreign workers

People who live in heavily industrialized areas do not get as much sunshine as they should. Dust floating over a city at the height of more than 4.000 feet cut out between 20 and 50 percent of the sunlight and up to 90 percent of the ultraviolet light(紫外线).But this is not the only thing to worry about. When materials for burning are burned, whether in a factory of in a home, or in the engine of a car, carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)and carbon monoxide(一氧化 碳)are given off. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere prevents loss of heat and keeps warmth in slowly raising the temperature of the earth. This could actually change the climate all over the world. Carbon monoxide is very poisonous and quite small amounts can kill.

Everybody wants to have a motor car, and sometimes when the roads are blocked it seems as though everybody has already got one. Unfortunately, while giving us so much pleasure, cars are also poisoning. The amount of dangerous substances sent out by a car is quite astonishing.

Do you know ,for example, that a hundred cars can produce a third of a ton of carbon monoxide and many other poisonous substances every day? When you realize that in Great Britain there are over 18,000,000 motor cars, you can see the greatness of the problem.

What is the answer then? Scientists are trying to produce a car engine that gives off no pollution at all. But what about the millions of cars already in use now? Must they all be so thrown away? It would probably be very expensive to make changes in them so that they will have nothing to do with pollution.

67.Acoording to the passage, people in big cities should .

A.throw away their cars B.get more sunshine

C.move to the countryside D.wear masks(面具)over nose and mouth

68.What is not harmful to health in the atmosphere?

A.Carbon dioxide B.Carbon monoxide

C.Dust D.Ultraviolet rays

69.From the text we know .

A.many answers have been found to do away with the pollution caused by cars

B.millions of cars have already been equipped with new engines that give off no gases

C.it costs some to make the present cars free of pollution

D.scientists have stopped looking for new ways to make the atmosphere clear

70.What do you think people should not do to prevent pollution?

Without most people realizing it, there has been a revolution in office work over the last ten years.

Before that time, large computers were only, used by large, rich companies that could afford the investment. With the advancement of technology, small computers have come onto the market, which are capable of doing the work which used to be done by much larger and expensive computers, so now most smaller companies can use them

The main development in small computers has been in the field of word processors (处理器) , or WPS as they are often called. 40% of British offices are now estimated to have a word processor and this percentage is growing fast.

There are many advantages in using a word processor for both secretary and manager. The secretary is freed from a lot of daily work, such as re-typing letters and storing papers. He or she can use this time to do other more interesting work for the boss. From a manager's point of view, secretarial time is being made better use of and money can be saved by doing daily jobs automatically outside office hors.

But is it all good? If a lot of daily secretarial work can be done automatically, surely this will mean that fewer secretaries will be needed. Another worry is the increasing medical problems related to work with visual display units (显示器). The case of a slow loss of sight among people using word processors seems to have risen greatly. It is also feared that if a woman works at a VDU for long hours, the unborn child in her body might be killed. Safety screens to put over a VDU have been invented but few companies in England bother to buy them.

Whatever the arguments for and against word processor, they are are a key feature (特征) of this revolution in office practice.

71. Then years ago, smaller companies did not use large computers because_________.

A. these companies had not enough money to buy such expensive computers

   B. these computers could not do the work that small computers can do today

   C. these computers did not come onto the market

   D. these companies did not need to use this new technology

72. According to the writer, the main feature of the revolution in office work

over the last ten years is __________.

  A. the saving of time and money B. the use of computers in small companies

  C. the wide use of word processors D. the decreasing number of secretaries

73. It is implied but not directly stated in the passage that with the use of word

  processors _________.

  A. some secretaries will lose their jobs

  B. daily jobs can be done automatically outside office hours

  C. medical problems related to work with a VDU have increased

  D. the British companies will make less money

74. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

  A. There are both advantages and disadvantages in using a word processor

  B. The British companies care much for the health of the people using word processors.

  C. The technology in the field of computers has been greatly advanced over the last ten years.

  D. Using word processors , secretaries can get more time to do more interesting work for their bosses.

75. It can be concluded from the passage that ________.

    A. safety screens are of poor quality

  B. working at a VDU for a long time is good for one's health

  C. more and more British offices will use word processors

  D. British companies will need fewer and fewer manages

A Traffic Accident

A traffic accident happened at a corner near the department store in our city on the morning of April 10th, 2005. A car knocked down an old man with a stick in his hand, who was crossing the street. Then a speeding truck knocked over the car. As a result, ten people were killed and thirteen were injured. The cause of the accident was that the driver of the car had drunk too much before driving and wasn't able to control the car, while the truck driver was driving too fast. So the city government warned all the drivers to learn a lesson from this accident.
