¡¡¡¡¡¡ I once brought some foreign friends to visit a Malay kampong a few kilometres outside the city. These friends from Australia were rather interested in finding out how Malay villagers lived. I decided the best way was to take them to an actual Malay kampong where they could see for themselves.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ The kampong we visited was a seaside kampong. Naturally most of the kampong folk were fishermen although some were engaged in other jobs.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ There were about thirty houses ¨Cmost of them were wooden structures with attaproofs. There were no fences to separate the houses ----they had a sort of communal garden. Each family had its own small plot of land where they planted flowers or vegetables. They had no piped water supply but depended on wells for their water.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ The kampong folk kept ducks and chickens which were allowed to wander freely about the compound. The visitors were surprised that the people in the kampong were so friendly and helpful towards one another. Although they shared communal gardens or compounds, there was no bickering or quarrelling.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ Most of the houses were built on stilts and we also found large numbers of coconut trees growing within the kampong. We were invited into one of the kampong houses for some refreshments. Later the visitors took some photographs and walked round the village. We thanked the headman for allowing us the opportunity of visiting the village.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ New Year¡¯s Day is the world¡¯s oldest celebration. In fact, ancient people celebrated the new year even before they had exact ways of measuring time. New Year¡¯s Day also is the one holiday that is observed everywhere in the world, by people of all national and religious(×ڽ̵Ä)groups.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ Not everyone celebrates the new year at the same time, members of the Russian Orthodox(¶«Õý½Ì)Church, for examples, observe it on January thirteenth. The Chinese celebrate at different times each year, sometime between January twenty¡ªfirst and February nineteenth. But the majority of people today¡ªincluding Americans ¨Ccelebrate the new year on January first.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ In some countries, the New Year¡¯s holiday is the most important celebration of the year. This is not true in the United States, even though it is a celebration that many people enjoy. One reason may be that Christmas comes just one week before the new year. Christmas is American¡¯s biggest holiday. And many people give it the importance that people in other countries give the start of a new year.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ The most popular way to welcome the new year in the United States is with a big party. Some parties are at private homes. ¡¡¡¡¡¡ Plants seem to know which way is up and which way is down; moreover, they seem to know right from left. If a cutting from a poplar£¨°×Ñtree is kept alive, new shoots will grow from the end that grew on the top in the tree.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ There is no clear difference between the top and the bottom of the living stick, even under a microscope. Even so, the stick will not send out shoots from the end it regards as bottom even if this end happens to be top!

¡¡¡¡¡¡ Scientists studying this subject further split their cuttings. To their surprise, they made another interesting discovery. A good many more young leaves grew on the right-hand side of the split surface than on the left. They split the stick again and found that the young leaves again grew on the right sides.

When you buy a T-shirt, or a fur coat in a store , it often carries a label(±êÇ©)telling who made it or from which shore it was bought. Indeed, some label show the dress is famous and it is very expensive, so buyers secretly wish they might be carried for ever. On the other hand, buyers who deal with the cheapest products(²úÆ·) would be pleased to do away with labels entirely.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ However, there is another label more important than the one showing from which store the dress was bought. When a person buys a fur coat, or a jacket from a store, a label telling what the product is made of should be carried to it.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ This label is required by law. Besides telling what the product on show is made of, the label should be in clear English and be where one can find it easily. The information on the label must be the truth.

¡¡¡¡¡¡ The reason for this label is that most buyers today aren¡¯t expected enough to know exactly what kind of fur or material they are buying. The buyer must believe in the store that sells the products or in what the labels say.
