It's interesting to watch the many boats going up and down the river. But the river traffic is not nearly so interesting as the beautiful scenery along the banks and hillsides. The boat is passing many old castles. We can see people working in the vineyards (葡萄园) on the hillsides. There are vineyards as far as the eye can see. How good are U.S. drivers?
The CBS TV “National Drivers Test”showed that many U.S. drivers have a lot to learn. Here's why:
CBS picked 1,799 samples (被实验者) to take the test in TV studios in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles. More than two out of five of the drivers failed the test. And the average score was the lowest passing mark----51 points out of a possible 80.

Here are some surprising facts brought out by the test: (1)More than one out of three drivers did not know that a blinking (闪烁) red light means a full stop. (2)Three out of ten drivers did not know that an octagonal (eight-sided)sign means stop. (3)More than two of three drivers did not know what to do when being “tailgated”(危险地,紧接另一辆行驶) The answer:slow down, drive to the right, and let the driver behind pass.

If you asked people today why they used the telephone to communicate with their friends or why they turned to the television for entertainment, they would look at you as if you were crazy. We don't think about a telephone or a television or a car as being rare. These things have become such an essential part of life that they are no longer noticed, let alone remarked upon.

In the same way, within a decade no one will notice the Worldwide Web(互联网). It will just be there, an essential part of life. It will be a reflex to turn to the Web for shopping, education, entertainment and communication, just as it is natural today to pick up the telephone to talk to someone.

There is an enormous interest in the Web. Yet it is still in its infancy(婴儿期). The technology and the speed of response are leaping forward. This will move more and more people to the Web as part of their everyday lives. Eventually ,everyone's business card will have an electronic mail address. Every lawyer, every doctor and every business—from large to small —will be connected.

To predict that it will take over ten years for these changes to happen is probably pessimistic(悲观的). We usually overestimate what we can do in two years and underestimate what we can do in ten. The Web will be as much a way of life as the car by 2008. probably before.

64. What is implied in Paragraph 1?

A. Only mad people would ask questions about telephones, TV sets and cars.

B. We don't usually ask people why they use the telephone, television and car.

C. Today televisions and cars are no longer as important as they used to be.

D. In some places, the telephone, television and car are still rare things.

65. According to the text, in ten years' time the Web will ______.

A. have become part of people’s everyday life

B. be as cheap as the telephone of today

C. have lost its interest to people

D. no longer be an infant

66. The word “reflex” in Line 2, Paragraph 2 probably means _____.

A. automatic, unthinking act

B. something one is thinking over

C. reflection of other people's opinion

D. turning from the source

67. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. The development of the Web has just started.

B. It will probably take less than ten years for the Web to become common.

C. Eventually the Web will be able to link all businesses together.

D. We are usually too optimistic when we talk about what we can do in ten years.

D

In 1997, a group of twenty British women made history. Working in five teams with four women in each team, they walked to the North Pole. Apart from one experienced female guide, the other women were all ordinary people who had never done anything like this in their lives before. They managed to survive in an environment which had defeated several very experienced men during the same time period.
The women set off as soon as they were ready. Once on the ice, each woman had to ski along while dragging a sledge (雪橇) weighing over 50 kilos. This would not have been too bad on a smooth surface, but for long distances, the Arctic ice is pushed up into huge piles two or three metres high, and the sledges had to be pulled up one side and carefully let down the other so that they didn’t become damaged. The temperature was always below the freezing point and sometimes strong winds made walking while pulling so much weight almost impossible. It was also very difficult for them to put up their tents when they stopped each night.
In such conditions, the women were making good progress if they covered fourteen or fifteen kilometres a day. But there was another problem. Part of the journey was across a frozen sea with moving water underneath the ice and at some points the team would drift (漂流) back more than five kilometres during the night. That meant that after walking in these very severe conditions for ten hours on one day, they had to spend part of the next day covering the same ground again. Furthermore, each day it took three hours from waking up to setting off and another three hours every evening to set up the camp and prepare the evening meal.
So, how did they manage to succeed? They realized that they were part of a team. If any one of them didn’t pull her sledge or get her job done, she would endanger the success of the whole expedition (探险). Any form of selfishness could result in the efforts of everyone else being completely wasted, so personal feelings had to be put to one side. At the end of their journey, the women agreed that it was mental effort far more than physical fitness that got them to the North Pole.
68. What was so extraordinary about the expedition?
  A. There was no one to lead it.
  B. The women did not have any men with them.
  C. It was a new experience for most of the women.
  D. The women had not met one another before.
69. On the expedition, the women had to be careful to avoid ________.
  A. falling over on the ice       B. being left behind
  C. damaging the sledges D. getting too cold at night
70. It was difficult for the women to cover 15 kilometres a day because ________.
  A. they got too tired B. the ice was moving
  C. they kept getting lost D. the temperatures were too low
71. What is the main message of the text?
  A. Motivation and teamwork achieve goals.
  B. Women can do anything they want.
  C. It is sometimes good to experience difficult conditions.
  D. Arctic conditions are very severe.
72. Which of the following items is NOT mentioned in the text?
  A. Weather conditions.         B. Protective clothing.
  C. Preparing food.           D. Feelings and relationships.

Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to notions they possess a "sixth sense" for disasters, experts said on Thursday.

Sri Lankan wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.

"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit. I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lanka's Wildlife Department, said on Wednesday.

The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards. "There has been a lot of anecdotal evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proven," said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo.

"There have been no specific studies because you can't really test it in a lab or field setting," he said.

Other authorities concurred with this assessment.

"Wildlife seem to be able to pick up certain phenomenon, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting impending disasters," said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.

Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators.

The notion of an animal "sixth sense" -- or some other mythical power -- is an enduring one which the evidence on Sri Lanka's battered coast is likely to add to.

The Romans saw owls as omens of impending disaster and many ancient cultures viewed elephants as sacred animals endowed with special powers or attributes.

The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday. It killed tens of thousands of people in Asia and East Africa.

73.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that

A.    after the Indian Ocean tsunami scientists are of an animal “six sense”

B.    before the Indian Ocean tsunami scientists didn’t believe in an animal “six sense”

C.    before the Indian Ocean tsunami of an animal “six sense”

D. the Indian Ocean tsunami has offered the only proof for an animal “six sense”

74.The author quoted Clive Walker’s words to

A.    throw doubt on an animal “six sense”

B.    show the difference opinions between Sri Lankan wildlife officials and the authorities

C.    show that authorities know better than animal behaviour specialists

D. add proof to an animal “six sense”

75.Which of the following does NOT belong to an animal “six sense”?

A.    Elephants avoiding the coming Indian Ocean tsunami.

B.    Dogs barking or birds migrating before volvanic eruptings or earthquakes.

C.    Birds detecting coming disasters.

D. Animals relying on the knowm senses as smell or hearing to avoid danger.
