Humans are social animals . They live in groups all over the world . As these groups of people

live apart from other groups , over the years and centuries they develop their own habits and ideas,

which form different cultures. One important particular side of evey culture is how its people deal

with time.

Time is not very important in non-industrial societies. The Nuer people of East Africa, for

example , do not even have a word TIME that is in agreement with the abstract thing we call time.

The daily lives of the people of such non-industrial societies are likely to be patterned around their

physical needs and natural events rather than around a time schedule based on the clock. They

cook and eat when they are hungry and sleep when the sun goes down . They plant crops during

the growing seasons and harvest them when the crops are ripe. They measure time not by a

clock or calendar, but by saying that an event takes place before or after some other events .

Frequently such a society measures days in terms of “sleeps”or longer periods in terms of

“moons” . Some cultures, such as the Eskimos of Greenland measure seasons according to the

migration(迁徙)of certain animals.

Some cultures which do not have a written language to keep written records have developed

Interesting ways of “ telling time” . For example , when several Australian aborigines(土著人)

want to plan an event for a future time, one of them places a stone on a cliff or in a tree. Each day the angle of the sun changes slightly. In a few days, the rays of the sun strike the stone in a certain way . When this happens the people see that the agreed-upon time has arrived and the event can take place.

68. By saying “Humans are social animals” the author means_____.

  A. they live like animals in the society .

  B. they are different from other animals.

  C. they live in groups, considered as a whole

  D. they are divided into many groups

69. In non-industrial societies, time is not very important because those people don’t___.

  A. have the word TIME in their languages

  B. get used to using clocks

  C. know how to measure time

  D. need to plan their daily life around an exact time schedule

70.The Australian aborigines’way of “telling time ”is based on ____.

  A. the change of the sun rays.

  B. the movement of the earth.

  C. the position of the stone .

  D. the position of the tree or the cliff

71. Which of the following might be the best title for this passage ?

  A. Time and Culture       B. The Measurement of Time

  C. Time Schedule and Daily Life  D. Clock, Calendar and Society

Foot-racing is a popular activity in the United states. It is not only seen as a competitive sport, but also as a way to exercise, to enjoy the camaraderie(同志情谊)of like-minded people ,and to donate (捐)money to a good cause . Though serious runners may spend months training to compete, other runners and walkers might not train at all. Those not competing to win might run in an effort to beat their own time ,or simply to enjoy the fun and exercise. People of all ages ,from those less than one year old ,who may be pushed in strollers(童车),to those in their 80s,enter into this sport . The races are held on city streets, on college campuses, through parks. Andin suburban areas, and are commonly 5 to 10 kilometres in length.

The largest foot-race in the world is the 12-kilometre Bay to Breakers race that is held in San Francisco every spring. In the front are the serious runners who compete to win, and who might finish in as little as 34minutes. Behind them are the thousands who take several hours to finish. In the back of the race are those who wear costumes just for fun. In 1993 there was a group of men all of whom dressed up like Elvis Presley . There was a group of fire fighters who were all tied in a long line and were carrying a fire hose(软管) . One year there was a bridal party in which the bride was dressed in a long white gown and the groom wore a tuxedo. The Water Cycle

When the sun shines on the surface of the oceans, the water is heated ,evaporates and becomes water vapor. Then is rises up into the air .As it rises ,it gets cooler and cooler , thus , larger numbers of water drops are formed, which, then , form clouds. When the water drops in the clouds are big and heavy enough ,they fall down to the earth . This is called rain. Some rain falls back into the oceans directly , while some falls down to the ground instead. As a result, the rain falling on the ground partly flows into the rivers on the surface of the earth, and partly sinks under the ground ,forming underground rivers. At last, the water flows back into the oceans again. This is called the water cycle.
