The report came to the British on May 21,1941. The German battleship Bismarck, the most powerful warship in the world, was moving out into the Atlantic Ocean. Her task: to destroy the ships carrying supplies from the United States to war-torn England.

The British had feared such a task. No warship they had could match the Bismarck in speed or in firepower. The Bismarck had eight 15-inch guns and 81 smaller guns. She could move at 30 nautical miles(海里) an hour, she was believed to be unsinkable.

However, the British had to sink her. They sent out a task force headed by their best battleship Hood to hunt down the Bismarck. On May 24, the Hood found the Bismarck.

It was a meeting that the German commander Luetjens did not want to see. His orders were to destroy the British ships that were carrying supplies, but to stay away from a fight with British warships.

The battle didn’t last long. The Bismarck’s first torpedo(鱼雷)hit the Hood, which went down taking all but three of her 1,419 men with her.

But in the fight, the Bismarck was slightly damaged. Her commander decided to run for repairs to France, which had at that time been taken by the Germans. The British force followed her. However, because of the Bismarck’s speed and the heavy fog, they lost sight of her.

For two days , every British ship in the Atlantic tried to find the Bismarck. But with no success. Finally, she was sighted by a plane from Ireland. Trying to slow the Bismarck down so that their ships could catch up with her, the British fired at her from the air. The Bismarck was hit.

On the morning of May 27, the last battle was fought. Four British ships fired on the Bismarck. And she was finally sunk.

Some people seem to have the ability to learn languages. They can pick up new vocabulary, master rules of grammar, and learn to write in a new language more quickly than others. They do not seem to be any more intelligent (聪明的) than others, so what makes language learning so much easier for them? Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them.

First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher; they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.

Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.

Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practise using the language regularly because they want to learn with it.

What kind of language learner are you? If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully. On the other hand , if your language learning has been less successful, you might do well to try some of the techniques outlined above.

64. What makes language learning easier for some people than for others, according to this text?

D. Successful language learners are more intelligent than others.

B. Less successful language learners try to use good language learning techniques.

C. Language learning is less successful if you use these bad techniques.

D. Less successful language learning is the result of using these bad techniques.

A. To teach people to speak English.

B. To explain why language learning is difficult.

C. To compare language learning with other types of learning.

D. To encourage language learners to use these good techniques.

67. How do successful language learners learn language?

A. They learn independently, actively, and purposefully.

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between being a writer” and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”

The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For not every writer kissed by fortune, there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20year career(职业) in the U. S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿人),I had no hope at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that I hardly made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering, what if?I would keep putting my dream to the test--even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

68. The passage is meant to _________.

A. warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience

B. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer

C. show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to seek wealth and fame

D. encourage young people to consider writing as a career

B. A writer’s success depends on luck rather than on effort.

C. Famous writers usually live in poor condition.

D. The chances for a writer to become successful are small.

70. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?

A. He wasn’t able to produce a single book.      B. He hadn’t seen a change for the better.

C. He wasn’t able to have a rest for a whole year. D. He found his dream would never come true.

71. “Shadow land” in the last sentence refers to________.

A. the beautiful land one often dreams about B. the state of uncertainty before one’ s final goal is reached

C. the bright future that one is looking forward to   D. a world that exists only in one’s imagination

Chinese are very generous(慷慨的) when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes which will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.

However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.

Parents can see that their children’s skills vary. They may be skilled in some areas, while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize, though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence(自信).

The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.

Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.

Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.

Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not merely teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

72. Parents in China, according to this passage________.

A. are too strict with their children            B. are too rich to educate their children

C. have some problems in educating their children correctly  D. are too poor to educate their children

A. come from their parents      B. have nothing to do with their education

C. may be different         D. have something to do with their marks in the exams

A. the parents’ ideas of educating their children B. the education system

C. children’ s skills D. children’ s hobbies

75. According to the last paragraph we can conclude that________.

A. broken radios and television sets are useful B. one’s curiosity may be useful for his later life

C. an engineer must fix many broken radios D. a good student should spend much time repairing radios
