阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
I began to smoke when I was in high school. In fact, I remember the evening I was at a girlfriend’s house, and we were watching a movie ---- a terribly romantic movie. He ( the hero of the movie ) was in love, she ( his lady ) was beautiful, and they were both smoking. My friend had only two cigarettes from a pack in her mother’s purse, and she gave one to me. It was my first time.
My parents didn’t care much. They both smoked, and my older brother did too. My mother told me that smokers don’t grow tall, but I was already 5’6’’ ( taller than most of the boys in my class), so I was happy to hear that “ fact ”. In school, the teacher talked against smoking, but the cigarette advertisement were so exciting. The man in the ads were so good-looking and so successful, and the two women were ----- well, they were beautiful and sophisticated (老于世故的) .
I read a book called How to stop Smoking . The writer said that smoking wastes time, and that cigarettes cost a lot of money. “ So what? ” I thought. The book didn’t say that smoking can take away years of your life. But ten years later, everyone began to hear about the negative affects of cigarette smoking : lung disease, cancer, and heart problems. After that, there was a health warning on every pack of cigarettes. I didn’t pay much attention to the report and warnings. I felt healthy, and I thought I was taking good care of myself.
Then two events changed my mind. First, I started to cough. I thought it was just a cold, but it didn’t get better. Second, my brother got lung cancer. He got sicker and sicker. My brother and I used to smoke cigarettes together over twenty years ago, and we smoked our last cigarettes together the day before he died. I sat with him in his hospital room, and I decided to quit. “ No more cigarettes, ever ” I said to myself.
However, it was very hard to stop. Nicotine is a drug; as a result, cigarettes cause a powerful addiction. I tried several times to quit on my own ----- without success. I made excuses. I told myself: Smoking helps me keep my figure --- i.e. I don’t gain weight when I smoke. Smoking not only relaxes me but it also helps me think clearly. I’m free. Liberated women. I can smoke when I want to.
Finally, I ran out of excuses ---- I might say my excuses went up in smoke. I joined the “ Stop Smoking ” program at the local hospital, which also ended up in failure.

On average, American kids ages 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more that they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet (芭蕾舞). Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log hall that time. All in all, however, children's leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%
"Children are affected by the same time crunch (危机) that affects their parents," says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children's timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless, children in both double-income and "male breadwinner" households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with their parents.19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.)
All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. "Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself," says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.
The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing "free time" watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they're spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren't replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading. Let's face it, who's got the time?
60. By mentioning "the same time crunch" (Line 1, Para. 2) Sandra Hofferth means .
A. children have little time to play with their parents
B. children are not taken good care of by their working parents
C. both parents and children suffer from lack of leisure time
D. both parents and children have trouble managing their time
61. According to the author a child develops better if .
A. he has plenty of time reading and studying
B. he is left to play with his peers in his own way
C. he has more time participating in school activities
D. he is free to interact with his working parents
62. The author is concerned about the fact that American kids .
A. are engaged in more and more structured activities
B. are increasingly neglected by their working mothers
C. are spending more and more time watching TV
D. are involved less and less in household work
63. We can infer from the passage that .
A. extracurricular activities promote children's intelligence
B. most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched off
C. efforts to get kids interested in reading have been fruitful
D. most parents believe reading to be beneficial to children

Henry Ford, the famous U.S. inventor and car manufacturer, once said, "The business of America is business." By this he meant that the U.S. way of life is based on the values of the business world.
Few would argue with Ford's statement. A brief glimpse at a daily newspaper vividly shows how much people in the United States think about business. For example, nearly every newspaper has a business section, in which the deals and projects, finances and management, stock prices and labor problems of corporations are reported daily. In addition, business news can appear in every other section. Most national news has an important financial aspect to it. Welfare, foreign aid, the federal budget, and the policies of the Federal Reserve Bank are all heavily affected by business. Moreover, business news appears in some of the unlikeliest places. The world of arts and entertainment is often referred to as "the entertainment industry" or "show business."
The positive side of Henry Ford's statement can be seen in the prosperity that business has brought to U.S. life. One of the most important reasons so many people from all over the world come to live in the United States is the dream of a better job. Jobs are produced in abundance (大量地) because the U.S. economic system is driven by competition. People believe that this system crates more wealth, more jobs, and a materially better way of life.
The negative side of Henry Ford's statement, however, can be seen when the word business is taken to mean big business. And the term big business -- referring to the biggest companies, is seen in opposition to labor. Throughout U.S. history working people have had to fight hard for higher wages, better working conditions, and the fight to form unions. Today, many of the old labor disputes are over, but there is still some employee anxiety. Downsizing ---- the laying off of thousands of workers to keep expenses low and profits high -- creates feelings of insecurity for many.
64. The United States is a typical country .
A. which encourages free trade at home and abroad
B. where people's chief concern is how to make money
C. where all businesses are managed scientifically
D. which normally works according to the federal budget
65. The influence of business in the U.S. is evidenced by the fact that .
A. most newspapers are run by big businesses
B. even public organizations concentrate on working for profits
C. Americans of all professions know how to do business
D. even arts and entertainment are regarded as business
66. According to the passage, immigrants choose to settle in the U.S., dreaming that .
A. they can start profitable businesses there
B. they can be more competitive in business
C. they will make a fortune overnight there
D. they will find better chances of employment
67. Henry Ford's statement can be taken negatively because .
A. working people are discouraged to fight for their fights
B. there are many industries controlled by a few big capitalists
C. there is a conflicting relationship between big corporations and labor
D. public services are not run by the federal government
D
Many years ago, Manhattan Island, which is a part of the great city of New York, was covered with forest . Along the shore were small Indian villages. In fact, Indians were the only people of the island until 1609. In the spring of that year. Henry Hudson, a famous sea captain, arrived here. He was trying to find a short way to the Far East for Dutch traders. His ship was very small. It was only about the size of one of the lifeboats you see on the modem ocean-ship. Of course, Henry Hudson did not find a shorter way to the Far East. Instead he reached the shore of North America. He came to the mouth of the large waterway -- the Hudson River.
As he came near to the shore he saw the Indian villages. The Indians seemed friendly. They even came out to meet the ship and offered their furs to the Dutch sailor for glass beads (玻璃珠.)and other small things. Certainly furs are more valuable than glass beads and small things.
Indians, then, had no need of any money. They made small beads out of calm shells. These shell beads were the most valuable to them. They were used for decorating their clothing. So the Indians were glad to receive the glass beads and some small things. They were very useful to them. When Henry Hudson returned to Holland, he showed the fine furs. He told of the rich soil, the streams filled with animals. Now Dutch traders began to send many ships to the rich new world across the sea.
In 1623 the Dutch took the island as a colony. Three years later, they sent their first governor to the colony. The governor thought it best if he bought the land from the Indians. He met with the Indians and smoke the pipe of peace. The Indians thought if the white men wanted to give them pretty glass beads, brightly colored cloth, and sharp steel knives, they might as well accept the gifts. Those beads and other things would be worth about twenty-four dollars if you bought them today.
68.The settlers bought Manhattan Island from the Indians for only $ 24 because _________.
A. the Indians were unable to drive the settlers from the land
B. the settlers wished to be honest to trade with Indians
C. in 1926 the island was of very little value either to the Indians or to the Dutch

The fitness movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s centered around aerobic exercise (有氧操). Millions of individuals became engaged in a variety of aerobic activities and literally thousands of health spas developed around the country to capitalize (获利) on this emerging interest in fitness particularly aerobic dancing for females. A number of fitness spas existed prior to this aerobic fitness movement even a national chain with spas in most major cities. However their focus was not on aerobics but rather on weight-training programs designed to develop muscular mass strength and endurance in their primarily male enthusiasts. These fitness spas did not seem to benefit financially from the aerobic fitness movement to better health since medical opinion suggested that weight-training programs offered few if any health benefits. In recent years however weight training has again become increasingly popular for males and for females. Many current programs focus not only on developing muscular strength and endurance but on aerobic fitness as well.
Historically most physical-fitness tests have usually included measures of muscular strength and endurance not for health-related reasons but primarily because such fitness components have been related to performance in athletics. However in recent years evidence has shown that training programs designed primarily to improve muscular strength and endurance might also offer some health benefits as well. The American College of Sports Medicine now recommends that weight training be part of a total fitness program for healthy Americans. Increased participation in such training is one of the specific physical activity and fitness objectives of Healthy People 2000 National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives.
71. The word “spas” Line 3 Para.1 most probably refers to ____.
A. sports activities
B. places for physical exercise

W:What’s wrong with you?
M:I fell off my bike and hurt my arm.
(Text 2)
M:What have you been with recently?
M:I’ve been busy mailing postcards to my classmates.
(Text 3)
W:Are you scared about leaving home and going to college?
M:Yes, a little bit. Leaving home is a part of growing up, though.
(Text 4)
W:Bring your raincoat with you.
M:No need. It doesn’t seem to rain. The sun is shining.
W:But these days it usually rains in the afternoon.
(Text 5)
M:Do you think you could possibly work late this morning?
W:Work late?
M:I’m afraid there’s some work we really must finish this evening. I can’t possibly do it
myself.
W:I suppose so, if you really think it’s necessary.
M:Thank you. We’ll have to work about an hour’s overtime. That’s all.
(Text 6)
M:Excuse me. I am a stranger here and I’ve lost my way.
W:What can I do for you?
M:Could you please tell me the way to the museum?
W:That’s easy. Go straight ahead and take the second turning on your right. Walk down
that street to the end.
M:How long will it take me?
W:About fifteen minutes.
M:By the way, where can I get a city map?
W:I am sure you can get one at the gate of the museum.
M:Many thanks to you.
W:My pleasure.
(Text 7)
M:How do you do!
W:How do you do! What can I do for you?
M:Well, I’ve just got off an international flight, and I’m not sure which mode of transport
I should make use of on my trip. So I need some advice.
W:Go on, please.
M:I’m planning to travel to some famous places-Beijing, Xi’an and Guilin in China. Which
mode of transport is the best for me?
W:Well, that depends on how much time and money you’re going to spend on your trip.
M:I see. I’m traveling at my expense, so I want to save both time and money spent on my
way.
W:Oh, I know what you mean. Now that you are in Beijing, you should visit the Great Wall,
the Summer Palace, the Imperial Palace and Tian’anmen Square as well. During your trip
in Beijing, make use of the underground which is faster and cheaper.
M:How can I get to Xi’an? You know I have to go to Beijing after I’ve finished all my
traveling.
W:It’s much cheaper to take a train to Xi’an than to fly. In my opinion, you should take the
train to Xi’an and then to Guilin. You will not only save money but also have a close
beautiful scenic trip. After that, fly directly from Guilin to Beijing.
M:Good! That’s a really good idea. I’ll do as you have suggested. Thanks. Thanks a lot.
W:Not at all! Good-bye!
M:Good-bye!
(Text 8)
W:What do you do, Peter?
M:I’m a student but I’m working with my teacher for two weeks for the summer vocation.
W:You won’t have a holiday, will you?
M:Oh, yes, I have three weeks’ holiday. I’m flying to Japan and India. One week in Japan
and two weeks in India.
W:That’s treat.
(Text 9)
W:Can you help me?
M:What seems to be the trouble?
W:There is something wrong with my bike.
M:Oh, your bike seems to have become loose. That’s dangerous. Without a good brake,
you can’t control your speed. Accidents are more likely to happen. You’d better have
it repaired as soon as possible.
W:Where can I find a repairman?
M:There is one at the corner of the street near the post office. It is about 150 meters away.
W:Will it take long to get it fixed?
M:Just 15 minutes.

I am working in the Green Park Zoo in southeast of London. I am animal keeper. One
morning I went to work as usual. When I got to the zoo, my fellow told me that a young lion
escaped from the zoo because of the hurricane the night before.Mr Charles the manager told
us to get ready to search for the lion at any time when needed.
At about twenty in the afternoon, we were told to set out at once, for it was reported that
the lion had appeared in the bushes in a lady’s garden. We drove our car as fast as we could.
When we got there we found the garden had already been surrounded by the police. And the
lion could be seen in the bushes, eating something. We walked quietly towards the bushes.
As we got near, I pointed my pipe at the lion and fired. The lion made a sudden angry noise
and struggled to its feet, but failed. It fell over and lay still. In this way we caught the lion
and took it to the zoo.
