第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,共40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项

A

Of the six-billion-plus people in the world,600 million live on islands. In other words, one in ten of the world’s population is an island dweller. This is not so hard to imagine when you consider that more than 200 million people live in Indonesia alone—and about 60 million more live on the island of Britain.

No island,or group of islands,is the same.Indonesia, for example,is a nation which consists entirely of islands, nearly 14,000 of them,of which 6,000 are inhabited.Britain is a small, crowded island, with a population density of 243 people per square kilometer, almost twice as much as China.Britain is also the only island in the world which is connected to a continent by a tunnel, the Channel Tunnel between southeast England and North France.

If you ignore Australia, which is an island-continent,the largest island in the world is Greenland,an unusual name for a place which is almost permanently covered in ice! On the other hand,Iceland, which is Greenland’s relatively near neighbor to the east,is much greener.

Why is this?Iceland is far enough north, like Greenland,to be entirely covered by ice,but more than one third of Iceland is volcanically active.Magma, which is molten volcanic rock below the surface of the ground, heats the terrain above it,keeping it green. The story goes that an early settler from Iceland gave Greenland its name in order to encourage more people to live there!

Even the smallest islands have a story to tell. The remotest inhabited island in the world is Tristan da Cunha, which is in the South Atlantic Ocean.Fewer than 250 people live there and they are all related to each other, with only seven surnames between them. The island capital has the romantic name of Edinburgh of the South Seas.

56.According to the text,islands contain

A.one in ten of the world’s population

B.more than six billion people

C.a total of 200,000,000 people

D.much less than 10 percent of the world’s population

57.What does the text tell us by the expression“population density”in the second paragraph?

A.Britain is half as crowded as China.

B.China’s population is around 485 people per square kilometer in the country as a whole.

C.The population per square kilometer is much greater in Britain than in China because of the size of the IK.

D.Britain is twice as populated as China.

58.Where is Edinburgh of the South Seas?

A.On the smallest island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

B.On a romantic,uninhabited island.

C.On a distant, small island inhabited by few people.

D.On a Scottish island in the South Seas.

59.What is the topic of the text?

A.Indonesia Islands B.Islands in the South Pacific.

C.Islands around the world. D.Ialand dwellers.

Most schools ban chewing gum,but in a few years they might consider changing that rule. Why? Scientists are finding evidence that gum chewing may be good for your health. It may even help boost(提高)your test scores.

This exciting research is just beginning. And in the meantime, companies are also experimenting with adding vitamins, minerals, medicines, and other substances that could give gum the power to cure headaches and fight everything from serious diseases to bad breath.

People have been chewing gum for thousands of years.Ancient Greeks,Mayas, and Native Americans, for example, chewed on the sap,or resin of certain types of trees.Today gum is a litde more complicated.Gum manufacturers start by mixing resin, wax, and a molecule called polyvinyl acetate to make a gum base.By varying the types and amounts of these ingredients, scientists can make thousands of formulations.

Just what can gum do for your health? Many studies show that chewing gum after meals fights cavities(洞)by stimulating the production of saliva.Saliva helps wash away bacteria that damage our teeth. An ingredient called xylitol, which is added to it,provides an extra dose of cavity-fighting power. This is good for more than just the teeth.Research suggests that good oral health decreases the risk of heart disease, and other serious diseases.

Chewing gum might also be good for your brain.Chewing gum boosts the flow of blood to participants’brains by 40 percent.

But too much chewing can damage the jaw joint. And chewing too much of gum that contains vitamins, caffeine,or a medicine could lead to an overdose. What’s a more,no matter how healthy gum chewing proves to be,it will never be a match for a healthy lifestyle.

Nothing like gum or a vitamin is going to cure a bad dietary habit or a bad exercise habit;it’s not a magic bullet.

64.Why are companies trying to put medicines into gum?

A.Because they want gum to cure some diseases.

B.Because they wish people to become addictive to it.

C.Because they plan to make gum more tasteful.

D.Because they hope to make gum good for teeth.

65.From the last two paragraphs,we can infer that

A.chewing gum has a magic power to cure your bad lifestyle

B.chewing gum can’t replace the healthy lifestyle

C.chewing gum can lead to a bad exercise habit

D.too much gum chewing proves to be harmful to your teeth

66.How does chewing gum fight cavities?

A.By making people brush teeth immediately after meals.

B.By killing bacteria that are harmful to our teeth.

C.By making people produce more saliva.

D.By adding some more medicines to the gum.

67.The best title for the passage may be

A.A Match for Exercise B.Gum Chewing is a Magic Bullet

C.No Gum Chewing at School D.Chewing Gum for Health

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy.Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs.Personal advisors give them better advice Kir finding jobs.Even judges are softer on  attractive defendants. But in the executive circle, beatuty can become a liability

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his waj up the executive ladder,it is harmful to a woman.

Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer men;effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.

Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones;their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unacttractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives.Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive ovemight successes.

Why are attractive women not thought to be able?An attractive woman considered to be more feminine has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the “manly”qualities required.

This is true even in politics,“When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differendy,”says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women,in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again,in the order that they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men,but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

A.disadvantaeg B.advantage C.misfortune D.trouble

A.turns out to be a disadvantag to men

B.is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women

C.has as little effect on men as on women

D.affects men and women alike

70.It can be inferred from the passage that people’s views on beauty are often

A.practical B.supportive C.old-fashioned D.one—sided

71.The author writes this passage to

A.give advice to job—seekers who are attractive

B.discuss the disadvanges of being attractive

C.demand equal rights for women

D.state the effects of appearance on men and women

Golf in the USA was until quite recently the hobby of old, middle class white men.Not any more. The fact that the class, age and race barriers that existed in the sport have finally been  broken down is due almost entirely to two people.Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie.

Tiger Woods was born in California in 1975 and is one of the greatest golfers of all time. His ethnic background is marvelously rich and varied. His father Earl was of mixed of black,Chinese and Native American ancestry and his mother Kultida, who was originally from Thailand, also had Chinese and Dutch forefathers.

Woods became a professional golfer in 1996 and, less than a year later, astonished the world easily winning the prestigious Masters Colf Tournament,an annual event which takes place at the Augusta Golf Club in Georgia,USA.At 21,he was the youngest golfer ever to win the tournament, but much more important,he was also the first Asian American to do it.

Woods’amazing achievement is put into perspective when you realize that until 1990,no non-white American had ever been allowed to join Augusta Golf Club.Even in 2000,it only had two black members. In fact,in 1977,Clifford Roberts, the chairman of the club and founder of the Masters Tournament, proclaimed:“As long as 1 am alive, golfers will be white and caddies

(球童)will be black.”Roberts died not long after making this racist remark…

Fortunately, his views were not shared by his successors(接替者)and the dramatic appearance of Tiger Woods on the Golf scene radically changed attitudes to the sport and prompted a major surge of interest in the game among ethnic minorities end young people in the USA.

Michelle Wie,a Korean American born in 1989 whose mother was an amateur golf champion in Korea, will probably became the greatest woman golfer of all time. She’s 1.85 meters tall and she can play a golf ball further than most men.Like Woods, she has transformed the world of golf, and wants to do so in even more dramatic ways. She has expressed her determination to play on the men’s tournament circuit, not just the women’s,and has already appeared in several professional men’s tournaments.

Thanks to Woods and Wie,golf in America will never be the same again.

72.What is the text about?

A.Tiger Woods’life in playing golf.

B.The achievements of two golf players from ethnic minorities.

C.Michelle Wie’s determination.

D.Playing golf in USA was once the hobby of old, middle class while men.

73.Less than a year after turning professional.Tiger Woods

A.easily won a major golf tournament. B.nearly won a major golf tournament.

C.joined the Augusta Golf Club. D.won a completely new golf tournament.

74.Which of the following sentences is true?

A.Tiger Woods was of mixed black,Chinese, and Native America.

B.Tiger Woods was not the first Asian American to win the Tournament.

C.Tiger Woods’achievement was amazing because he was the youngest golfer.

D.Tiger Woods’dramatic appearance on the golf scene had the attitude to this sport in USA changed.

75.Michelle Wie’s ambition is to

A.play like Woods.

B.play in a dramatic way

C.compete on equal terms with male golfers.

书面表达参考:

Dear Sir,

I am writing to tell you what has happened to me recently.

Three weeks ago I bought an MP4 at an e-market in our city。But I hadn’t used it for several days when something went wrong with it.。So I went to the e-market,only to be told that the problem couldn’t be solved until it was sent to its factory。Then I sent it there without any delay。Fortunately, the factory promised to get it repaired and sent it back in a week。Two weeks has passed, however,I haven’t received it up till now。I have no idea why things are like this。I’m expecting to receive my player as soon as possible。

Thank you for taking trouble to solve this matter。

Yours faithfully,

Li Dong
