第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

A

Dear Abby,

This is my first letter to you, although I have been reading your column (专栏) for many years. I need an outside opinion.

I am a grandmother in my 70s and have just returned from visiting my daughter, her husband and their three dearly-loved children—all under age of 5—and I am upset with some of their parenting ways.

  For example:

They lock the doors to their children’s bedroom at night because the children might get out of their beds and walk around the house, and we may not hear them.

If one child should get punishment, all three are punished, and if one child says a naughty word, all three are given hot sauce in the mouth.

I know these parents love their children very much, but are these ways of making them wise? Please understand, it is not my aim to interfere (干涉).

                                     Gram

Dear Gram,

Children’s bedroom doors should not be locked. Should a flash fire break out, it would be a nightmare.

Punishing all the children when only one has earned the punishment is a way only to make them grow up to hate each other.

Children who use naughty words should not be punished with hot sauce in the mouth they should be taught the proper and acceptable word to use instead of the naughty word.

                                     - Abby

Every object has weight. But the center of its weight is not always in the middle of the object. If the top of an object is heavier than its bottom, it will fall over easily. We say that its center of gravity is high. But if the bottom is heavier, it won’ t fall easily. Then we say that its center of gravity is low.

Look at Picture One. This empty box must fall over, because its center of gravity (C) is not above the line of its bottom (AB).

Now look at Picture Two. There is some heavy iron in the bottom of this box. It will not fall, because its center of gravity is above its bottom.

C

New York: When the first jet struck 1 World Trade Center at 8:48 am on Tuesday, the people in 2 World Trade Center with a view of the instant damage across the divide had the clearest sense of what they, too, must do: get out fast.

Katherine llachinski, who had been knocked off her chair by the blast of heat exploding from the neighboring tower, was one of those. Despite her 70 years of age, Mrs. llachinski, an architect working on the 91 it floor of 2 World Trade Center, the south tower, went for the stairs. Twelve floors above her, Judy Wein, a manager, screamed and set off too.

But others up and down the 110 floors, many without clear views of the damage across the way and thus unclear about what was happening, were not so sure. And the 18 minutes before the next plane would hit were ticking off!

Among the uncertainty about what was the best thing to do, formal announcements inside the south tower instructed people to stay put, assuring them that the building was sound and the threat was limited to the other tower.

Some left, others stayed, some began to climb down and, when met with more

announcements and other warning to stop or return, went back up. The decisions made in those instants proved to be of great importance, because many who chose to stay were doomed (注定死亡) when the second jet crashed into the south tower, killing many and stranding (使某物流在) many more in the floors above where the jet hit.

One of those caught in indecision (犹豫不决) was the manager at Fuji Bank USA.

Richard Jacobs of Fuji Bank left the 79th floor with the other office workers, but on the 48th floor they heard the announcement that the situation was under control. Several got in the lifts and went back up, two minutes or so before the plane crashed into their floor.

"I just don’t know what happened to them," Mr. Jacobs said.

64. From the passage, we know that the south tower was hit by the plane ____

  A. at 8:30 B. 18minutes earlier than the north tower

  C. at around 9:06 D. at 8:48

65. The underlined words "stay put" means______.

  A. stay in the building            B. leave at once

  C. put everything back and then leave D. keep silent

66. Which floor was hit by the second jet?

  A. The 91st floor. B. The 103rd floor.

  C. The 60th floor. D. The 79th floor.

67. Fewer people would have died if _____.

  A. more announcements had been made

  B. people hadn’t used the lifts

  C. the incident had happened on a weekend

  D. people chose to stay

D

A person, like a commodity (商品), needs packaging. But going too far is absolutely undesirable. A little exaggeration, however, does no harm when it shows the person’s unique qualities to their advantages. To show personal attractiveness in a casual and natural way, it is important for one to have a clear knowledge of oneself. A skilled packager knows how to add art to nature without any signs of embellishment (装饰), so that the person so packaged is not a commodity but a human being, lively and lovely.

A young person, especially a female, shining with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted by God. Any attempt to make up would be self-defeating. Youth, however, comes and goes in a flash. Packaging for the middle-aged is primarily to hide the marks made by years. If you still enjoy life enough to keep self-confidence and work at pioneering work, you are unique in your natural qualities, and your attractiveness and grace will remain. Elderly people are beautiful if their river of life has been, through plains, mountains and jungles, running its course as it should. You have really lived your life, which now arrives at a self-satisfied stage

of quietness and calmness with no interest in fame or wealth. There is no need to make use of hair dyeing. The snow-capped mountain is itself a beautiful scene of fairyland. Let your looks change from young to old in step with natural ageing process so as to keep in harmony (和谐) with nature, for harmony itself is beauty, while the other way round will only end in unpleasantness. To be in the elder’s company is like reading a thick book of deluxe ( better quality) edition that attracts one so much as to be unwilling to part with.

As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a commodity sets up its brand by the right packaging.

68. It can concluded from the text that _______.

  A. people should be packed at all ages

  B. people should be packed in a special way

  C. elderly people also care about packing

  D. proper packing makes people attractive

69. According to the author, if you want to keep in harmony with nature, you should_______.

  A. dye your hair             B. make up at a young age

  C. follow the ageing process       D. give up fame and wealth

70. For the middle-aged, attractiveness________.

  A. hardly exists B. is the strongest

  C. comes from the inside D. comes from the appearance

71. The underlined sentence means that elderly people_____.

  A. are usually packed like a finely-made book

  B. experience a lot and have rich knowledge of life

  C. do a lot of traveling and can give you much information

  D. enjoy reading thick books of beautiful nature and fairylands

E

The consumption (消费) of forests, energy and land by human is exceeding (超过) the rate at which earth can replenish (补充) itself, according to recent research. The finding was published last week in the Proceeding of the US National Sciences Academy.

The study was done by the US-based Redefining Progress, a nonprofit group concerned with environmental conversion and its economics. The scientists warned that a failure to rein (控制) in humanity’s overuse of natural resources could send the planet into "economical bankruptcy (破产)".

Earth’s resources "are like a pile of money anyone can grab while they all close their eyes, but then it’s gone," said Mathis Wackernagel, the lead author of the study.

Scientists said humanity’s demand for resources soared (急速上升) during the past 40 years to a level where it would take the planet 1.2 years to regenerate (再生) what people remove each year.

The human impact on the environment inched higher since 1961 when public demand was 70 percent of the planet’s regenerative capacity, the study showed.

The study, which details the population’s impact on the earth with a quantitative number, measures the "ecological (生态的) footprint" of human activities such as marine fishing, harvesting timber, building infrastructure (基础) and burning fossil fuel that emits carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) into the atmosphere.

Researchers then used government data and various estimates to determine how much land would be required to meet human demand for those actions.

Wachernagel and his team found that, in 1099, each person consumed an average of 2.3 hectares. The global average was significantly lower than industrialized countries. The United States, for example, consumed 9.6 hectares per person and the United Kingdom, 5.3 hectares.

In order to develop a formula (公式) that measures human’s consumption and the Earth’s regenerative capacity, the researchers were forced to reach several assumptions (假设) and omit (忽略) the use of some resources because of insufficient (不充足的) data.

Still the findings revealed (透露) that human use of resources was far outstripping (超过) earth’s supply.

72. According to Proceeding of the US National Sciences Academy, _______.

  A. it would take the planet 48 years to regenerate what people removed in the past 40 years

  B. 70 percent of the global resources has been consumed by now

  C. the overuse of natural resources has almost sent the World Bank into bankruptcy

  D. it would take the planet about 180 days to regenerate what people removed in a 3’ear 40 years ago

73. The underlined word "impact" in Paragraph 5 may mean "______".

  A. usage B. effect     C. strike D. damage

74. Wackernagel and his team found that _______.

  A. the average consumption of land of the United Kingdom was the second largest

  B. burning fossil fuel emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere

  C. the government data was sufficient for the scientists to do their research

  D. human use of resources was far more than Earth’s regenerative capacity

75. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

  A. Wackernagel said that humans were blindly using Earth’s resources.

  B. Some countries consumed an average land less than 2.3 hectares.

  C. Redefining Progress may have earned lots of money from their research work.

  D. The researchers widely investigated the consumption of resources.

第二节 书面表达

参考范文:

Dear Tom,

I would like to give my opinion about being on the Internet.

More and more middle school students here are starting using the Internet, through which they can get a great deal of the latest information. They can enjoy lessons given by the best teachers of net-schools at home. And it is easy and convenient to keep in touch with friends by sending and receiving e-mails.

On the other hand, some students have spent too much time chatting and playing games on the net. And there is still something harmful to the students.

At last, I suggest that students should be good at using the Internet for their studies and not be on line for too long.

 Yours,

Li Hua
