The Peppered Moth, a kind of insect, is found in England. It is light brown in color and likes to settle on trees which are also light brown. This makes the moth difficult to see and birds are less likely' to notice it and eat it

But with the development of industry, smoke from factories began to reach the trees where the moth settled. It made the trees blacker.

Something very strange took place then, in industrial areas, the Peppered Moth began to change color. It became darker as well. Though the change took several years. Some scientists soon noticed that newly-born moths were a little darker than usual.

A certain scientist called Kettiewelt decided to make a careful study of and released(释放)them in some woods near Bermingham, an industrial city. Later, he recaptured(重新捕获) as many of the marked moths as possible. The results were as follows:

Light moths

Dark moths

Moths released

201

In our daily life we are used to hearing these words:" I can't wait for my holiday," "I wish I could stay home today……I'm very tired." These words come from pressure at work. Nowadays the "iron bowl" is being broken into pieces. Workers may be laid off for not having done their duties well. They have to do their jobs better.

People feel pressure not only because they might find themselves out of work but also because they get no real satisfaction from their work. For the great majority of workers, work is just a means of earning money. It appears as meaningless and worthless.

But 'pressure is a natural part of work.' There is no way to keep away from it. We should face up to that.

Work should be a cause of happiness and pride rather than a punishment or a burden (负担).In fact, a certain amount of pressure can provide challenge(挑战) and opportunity for leaning. To a modem man who is worried and low in spirit, developing a liking and finding new interest is of first importance. I like listening to pop music, which makes me calm and gives me pleasure.

If pressure becomes difficult to deal with, we should turn to our friends or families. We can have a drink with our friends and talk out the problem. We should always discuss our problems with our families. Good advice, warmth and happiness that families bring to us can reduce our pressures and encourage us to smooth away all difficulties.

  C. they can make more money after work D. they want to stay home

   A. Where there is work there is pressure.

   B. Work shouldn't be regarded as punishment or burden.

   C. All modem men are worried and low in spirit.

   D. A certain amount of pressure is necessary.

66. From the text we can know when pressure is too big

  A. we should drink with our friends.

  B. we can get help and comfort from our friends or families

  C. we can go home because it is warm

  D. to talk out the problem to our friends and families is the best way.

67.After reading it we can give the best title of the passage as"     ".

  A. How to deal with pressure B. Pressure is part of work

  C. Work is challenge       D. Work brings us opportunity for learning

Form Stanford we turned your attention north and slightly west to San Francisco. We set off at a quarter past eleven A.M. and before long a car traveling the 35 miles between the two places brought us the terrible news of a city in ruins, with fires beginning at various points, and the water supply interrupted. I was fortunate enough to board the only train that got up to the city; fortunate enough also to escape in the evening by the only train that left it. This gave me and brave female companion four hours of observation.

By midday, when we reached the city, the smoke was heavier and the terrible explosion had begun , but the troops , the police , and the firemen seemed to have set up order, dangerous neighborhoods were roped off everywhere and stationed with policemen, bars were closed, trucks or cars were forced into service, and everyone was at work who could work.

It was indeed a strange sight to see an entire population in the streets busy as ants in an uncovered ant hill hurrying to save their eggs. The sidewalks were covered with well-dressed men and women, carrying precious things, or dragging big boxes to spots of greater temporary(暂时的) safety; soon to be dragged farther, as the fire kept spreading!
