A

Today I would like to talk about the early days of movie making in the late nineteenth and the early twenties centuries. Before the pioneering film of D.W. Griffiths, film makers were limited by several rules of the time. According to one, the camera was always fixed at a view point corresponding to that of a viewer in the theater, a position now known as the long shot. It was another mle that the position of the camera never changed in the middle of a scene.

In last week’s films we saw how Griffith ignored both these limiting rules and brought the camera closer to the actor This shot, now known as a full shot, was considered as revolutionary at the time. For love of Gold was the name of the film in which we saw the first use of the full shot.

After progressing from the long shot to the full shot, the next logical step for Griffiths was to bring in the camera still closer, is what is called the close-up The close-up had been used before though only rarely and merely as a visual stunt(特技), as for example, in Edqaed Asport’s. The Great Train Robbery, which was made in 1903. But not until 1908 in Griffith's movie called After Many Years was the dramatic potential of the close-up first exploited. In the scene from After Many Years that we are about to see, pay special attention to the close-up of Annie Lee's worried face as she awaits her husband's return.

In 1908, Griffith's close-up shocked everyone in the Biogress Studio. But he had no time for argument. He had another surprise even more extreme to offer. Immediately following the close-up of Annie, he inserted a picture of the object of thoughts, her husband casting away off a deserted isle. This cutting from one scene to another without finishing either of them brought a lot of criticism on the experimenter.

56.What kind of motion picture camera shots was generally used in the early films?

A.A fixed position which is now called long shots.

B.A fixed point as far as viewers at the theater can see.

C.A position which Was just like the one in the middle of the theater.

D.A fixed point that would not change during the course of a movie.

57.What occupation did Edqaed Asport probably have?

A.He was an actor             B.She was an actress.

C.He was a film director D.He was an assistant of Griffith.

58.We know.according to the speaker, that a scene from the movie ______ was going to be shown during this lecture.

  A.TheGreat TrainRobbery B.AfterMany Years

C.For Love of Gold D.Biogress Studio

59.Why was the close-up of Annie Lee followed by a shot of her husband?

A.To shock everyone in the movie.

B.To show what Annie was waiting for.

C.To explain that her husband would come home soon.

D.To indicate her husband’s staying on a lonely island alone.

American Thomas Schelling and Israeli-American Robert Aumann share the 2005 Nobel Prize in economics. Both men have greatly influenced the way conflict and business negotiations(谈判) are carried out. The two men are being honored for their work in developing an economic idea. It is called game theory.

Game theory began as the study of decision-making in competitive situations, like games. John von Neumann and Oscar Morgenstern linked the theory of games with economic activities more than sixty years ago.

In the 1950s, John Nash developed an idea known as the Nash equilibrium(平衡), The Nash  equilibrium is the point where all sides in a competitive situation believe they have been given the best offer they will ever get. He proved this with mathematical methods. Ms Nash won the Nobel Prize in economics with two other men in 1994.

Mr. Schelling used the ideas of game theory to study real—life problems, such as the arms competition between the United States and the Soviet Union forty years ago. He was interested in what influenced negotiating groups. He showed how one side might decide to harm its interests for short period of time to make gains over a longer period. Mr. Schelling also used game theory to show how people become divided by race. He found that divided societies can result even among persons mostly willing to live near people of another race.

Mr. Aumann developed game theory mathematically so that it can be useful for different areas of study. He showed that peaceful cooperation can provide good results for all competitors in a game over a long period. This is true even among competitors with a temporary conflict of interest. Mr Aumann also considered how reasonable decisions are made among groups. He showed that knowing what competitors know is important to decision—making.

The work of both men has influenced areas of study other than economics. International negotiators, military planners, business leaders and biologists use methods developed by Mr. Schelling and Mr. Aumann.

Mr. Schelling, an American, is retired professor of the University of Maryland. Mr. Aumann is a citizen of both the United States and Israel. He is a retired professor of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

64.Mr. Schelling and Mr. Aumann share the 2005 Nobel Prize in economics for ________.

A.developing “game theory” B.developing the Nash equilibrium

C.proving “game theory” D.beginning the study of “game theory”

65.Who first connected“game theory”with economic activities according to the text?

   A.Mr. Schelling amd Mr. Aumann

B.Mr. Schelling and John von Neumann

C.John von Neumann and Oscar Morgenstern

    D.Mr. Nash and Mr. Aumann

66.The underlined phrase “make gains” in the fourth paragraph probably refers to ________.

   A.suffer loss B.improve health C.make money D.make a profit

67.According to Mr. Aumann, when we want to reach a reasonable decision among groups, we _____.

A.don’t have to be informed what our competitors think

B.must have a good understanding of what our competitors know

C.need only think about how we can make the most of our own interests

D.needn’t peacefully cooperate with our competitors to make a profit

D

Desertification (沙漠化) in the dry United States is very serious. Groundwater supplies beneath vast stretches of land are dropping rapidly. Many rivers systems have dried up. Hundreds of thousands of previously irrigated cropland have been abandoned to wind or weeds. Several million acres of natural grasslands are overused at unnaturally high rates. All told about 225 million acres of land are undergoing severe desertification.

Federal governments provide financial support to encourage the use of dry hmd resources. Low-interest loans for irrigation and other water delivery systems encourage farmers, industry, and cities to mine groundwater. Federal disaster relief and service program encourage dry-land farmers to make use of natural grassland to plant crops such as wheat and, especially, cotton. Federal grazing (放牧) fees which are well below the free market price encourage overgrazing of the commons. The market, too, provides powerful incentives(鼓励)to make use of dry land resources beyond the limits.

The incentives to use dry land resources are greater today than ever. The government is now offering huge new money support to produce artificial fuel from coal as well as alcohol fuel from crops. Moreover, goods prices are on the rise; and they will provide farmers with powerful incentives to overuse dry land resources. The existing federal government cost-share programs designed to help finance the protection as soil, water, and vegetation are pale in comparison to such incentives.

In the final analysis, when viewed in the national outlook, the effects on agriculture are the most troublesome aspect of desertification in the United States. For it comes at a time when we are losing over a million acres of rain-watered crop land per year to “higher uses”—shopping centers, industrial parks, housing development, and waste dump—regardless of the economic need of the United States to export agricultural products or of the world’s need U.S. food and cotton. Today the dry West accounts for 20 percent of the nation’s total agricultural output. If the United States is, as it appears, well in its way toward overdrawing the dry land resources, then the policy choice is simply to pay now for the appropriate solutions or pay for later when productive benefits from dry land resources have been both realized and largely finished.

68.Which of the following is not mentioned as a result of severe desertification?

A.A drop in the supply of ground water.

B.A quickly decreasing production of crops.

C.A large area of overused grassland.

D.A number of dried up river systems.

69.From the second and third paragraphs, we learn about _________.

A.more money is being used to protect lands from desertification now in the U.S.

B.1ess money is being invested in making use of large area of existing dry land

C.the federal government of the US favors farmers a lot over workers in companies

D.huge amount of effort has been made by the government to make use of dry land

70.The underlined word “pale” (1ine 5, paragraph 3) most probably means “__________”.

A.white in color             B.small in amount

C.equal in amount             D.huge in amount

71.Why the “higher uses” are criticized by the author?

A.Because both America and the world need the land for agricultural production.

B.Because Americans do not need that many shopping centers and apartments.

C.Because those higher uses create a large amount of waste of resources.

D.Because industrial parks and waste dumps are seriously polluting the environment.

72.The author’s attitude towards the present way of using the dry land is _________.

 A.supportive B.unconcerned C.confused D.disapproval

第二节 简答题 (共3小题, 满分6分)

 阅读下面短文, 根据第73至第75小题的具体要求, 简要回答问题。

Revenge is one of those things that everyone enjoys. People don’t like to talk about it, thoug. Just the same, there is nothing more satisfying or more rewarding that revenge. The purpose is not to harm your victims but to let them know that you are upset about something that they are doing to you. Careful plotting can provide you with relief from bothersome co-workers or gossiping friends. Co-workers who make comments about the fact that you are always 15 minutes late for work can be taken care of very simply. All you have to do is get up extra early one day. Before the sun comes up, drive to each co-worker’s house. Reach under the hood of your co-worker’s car and disconnect the center wire that leads to the distributor cap. The car will be unharmed, but it will not start, and your friends at work will all be late for work on the same day. If you’re lucky, your boss might notice that you are the only one there and will give you a raise. Gossiping friends at school are also perfect targets for it is a simple act of revenge. The way to trap either male or female friends is to leave phony message on their lockers. If the friend that you want to get is male, leave message that a certain girl would like him to stop by her house later that day. With any luck, her boyfriend will be there. The girl won’t know what’s going on, and the victim will be so embarrassed that he probably won’t leave his home for a month.

A well-planned payback does not have to hurt anyone. The object is simply to let other people know that they are beginning to bother you.

73.Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “revenge” in the first paragraph.

74.What mustn't we do when we take our revenge on our co-workers or friends? (回答词数不超过5个)

Tourism probably started in Roman times. Rich Romans visited friends and families who were working in another part of the Roman empire. But when the empire broke down, this kind of tourism stopped.

In the early 17th century, the idea of the “Grand Tour” was born. Rich young English people sailed across the English Channel. They visited the most beautiful and important European cities of the time, including Paris in France, and Rome and Venice in Italy. Their tours lasted for two or four years and the tourist stayed a few weeks or months in each city. The “Grand Tour” was an important part of young people’s education--bat only for the rich.

In the 18th century tourism began to change. For example, people in the UK started to visit some towns, such as Bath to “take the wasters”. They believed that the water there was good for their health. So large and expensive hotels were built in these towns.

In the 19th century, travel became much more popular and faster. When the first railways were built in the 1820's, it was easier for people to travel between towns, so they started to go for holidays by sea. And some started to have holidays in the countryside as cities became larger, noisier and dirtier.

Traveling by sea also became faster and safer when the first steamships were built. People began to travel more to faraway countries

第二节 写作

One possible version:

In Zhang’s opinion, his daughter is happy with the plan being carried out. On the one hand, the running shows their best wishes to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. On the other (hand), this kind of training will contribute to her winning a gold medal in the 2016 Olympic Games.

However, some reporters believe the parents are trying to be famous at the cost of their daughter’s physical and mental health. What’s more, it is against the Olympic spirits as well as the will of the child. Therefore, they believe the government should stop such a crazy action and protect the rights of children.

Personally, I think we should above all make sure that our children are happy and healthy.

A Life-Saving Cow

Six days of spring rain had created a river running by Nancy Brown's farm. As she tried to get her cows to higher ground, she slipped and hit her head on a fallen tree trunk. The fall knocked her out for a moment or two. When she came to, Lizzie, one of her oldest and favorite cows, was beside her. The water was rising. Nancy got up and began walking slowly with Lizzie. The water was now waist-high. Nancy's pace got slower and slower. Finally, all she could d0 was to throw her am around Lizzie's neck and try to hang on.About 20 minutes later, Lizzie managed to successfully pull herself and Nancy out of the swift water and onto a bit of high land, a small island now in the middle of the white water

Even though it was about noon, the sky was so dark and the rain and lightning so bad that it took rescuers another two hours to discover Nancy. A helicopter came and took her to the school gym, where the Red Cross had set up an emergency shelter.
