第二部分 阅读理解(共25小题;第一节每小题2分,第二节每小题1分;满分45分)

第一节 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

A few years ago I was shopping with a friend and his 12-year-old daughter in downtown San Francisco. A street musician, whom my friend happened to know from his own musician day, was playing the saxophone (萨克斯管 a kind of musical instrument) on a street corner. His name was Clifford, and he had attracted a large crowd with his performance. After he finished, my friend introduced him to me and his daughter. Clifford asked his daughter if she played any instruments. When she replied that she was taking trumpet(小号) lessons and played in her junior high school band(乐队), he said, “That’s fine, little lady. Learn your instrument well and you can play anything.”

Somehow these simple yet wise words struck me as appropriate(=proper) not only for a trumpet player but also for a reader. If you learn to read well, you can read anything you want-not just newspapers and magazines, but more difficult material like philosophy, film criticism, military history-whatever interests you as your confidence grows. You would not be limited in any way. If you have the vocabulary-or at least a good dictionary near at hand-you can pick up a book, concentrate on it, and make sense of the author’s words.

In the United States, reading instruction often ends at elementary(=primary) school, so students sometimes have difficulty as they progress through school. They must take their assignment(=homework) armed only with their elementary school reading skills. The result, too often, is frustration(挫折) and loss of confidence. And the assigned reading in your college courses will be even greater than they were in high school. Developing Reading Skills is designed to accomplish several tasks: to show you the skills that will enable you to read with greater comprehension, to help you cope with(=do/deal with) reading assignment with confidence, and to teach you to become an active reader.

41.The talk between the girl and Clifford serves as an introduction to ___________.

    A.the importance of reading

B.the connection between playing instruments and reading

C.the necessity of learning to play an instrument

    D.the variety of reading materials

42.It can be inferred from the story that ___________.

A.Clifford was good at playing the saxophone

B.the author’s friend was once a street musician

C.the 12-year-old girl played the trumpet very poorly

D.Clifford was a good music teacher

43.We can infer from the last paragraph that Developing Reading Skills __________.

A.is directed to elementary school students

    B.centers around vocabulary building skills

C.aims at helping students read better

    D.offers elementary reading skills

44.The underlined word “struck” in paragraph 2 most probably means __________.

    A.impressed B.influenced C.proved D.awakened

45.With good reading skills, you can ________.

A.understand anything you read without difficulty

B.work out the author’s meaning if only you concentrate on the book

C.understand what you read with the help of a good dictionary

    D.concentrate on whatever you read

Some people try to protect their children from unpleasant realities like illness, financial (of money) loss and death. But doctors point out that children can often end up feeling left out if they are old enough to understand what’s going on, but are not told the truth about family worries.

One widowed (a single person whose wife or husband is dead )father told me how deeply he regretted that he and his late wife did not tell their son that his mother was dying of leukemia(白血病). “For months we kept that truth to ourselves. We thought we were protecting our son from emotional pain,” he recalled. “It was a great mistake. I had time to prepare myself. But my wife’s death stunned our boy. It was years before he trusted me again.”

Says Judith Davenport, a psychotherapist(心理治疗医师) who practises in Santa Monica, California. “It’s important to let children experience the reality of death, if it can be done in an atmosphere of love and caring. A child whose sibling, parent or grandparent is seriously ill can be made to feel helpful by being allowed to run errands(跑腿) or answer the phone. Even a very young child can comfort a sick loved one with a brief cheering visit.”

In many matters, if children are not told the facts about a financial setback, says Grace W. Weinstein, writer of Children and Money, they may imagine the worst. For example, they might think they’ll have no food to eat or will lose their home, when the simple reality may be that luxuries(奢侈品) will have to be taken away.

Even the busiest family can arrange to share a relaxed evening meal together at least once or twice a week. Mealtimes are often the only time that families can engage in stimulating(机动人心的) conversations.

Says Michael Abrahams, a licensed(得到许可的) clinical social worker in Rockville, MD. “How mealtime is used to argue or talk, discipline or praise is a good barometer(晴雨表) of whether a family is drifting(=floating) apart or drawing closer.”

Another way to strengthen family closeness is to encourage your youngsters to invite a friend

for dinner from time to time, giving each child a turn at choosing the guest. This makes parents get to know their children’s friends, and also helps youngsters feel they are respected members of the family.

A joint endeavor can be stimulating if you choose one that everyone enjoys. Try planting and cultivating a garden, or organizing that box of old snapshots into a family album(相册), or learning how to bake bread from starch.

One father recalls the shared sense of success he and his son experienced when they finished building a dining-room table. “We started six months ago with plants and planks(=board), ” he says. “When the job was done, we looked at each other and said, ‘We did it1’”

46.The passage is written mainly for _____________

    A.parents B.children C.social workers D.teachers

47.Judging from the passage, what does “sibling” in the third paragraph mean?

    A.Friend B.Brother and sister C.Cousin D.Relative

48.What does the writer suggest in order to strengthen family ties?

A.Youngsters should invite friends to dinner at home.

B.Parents had better plant and cultivate a vegetable garden.

C.Make sure to let the child, no matter how old he is, know right now if somebody in your

    family is going to die.

D.Parents should tell their children of financial setback in the family in order that they get

    prepared psychologically(心理上)。

49.Why does building a dinner-room table give the father and his son shared sense of success?

    A.Because building a table a great pleasure.

B.Because others didn’t believe that they could finally do it.

C.Because a dining-room table is very important to the family.

D.Because they achieve something by doing something together.

Scientists have uncovered the exact difference between man and mouse. Teams of scientists from around the world will publish today the draft(草图) genome(基因组) of the mouse, which enables them for the first time to compare another mammal(哺乳动物)’s entire DNA directly with that of a human.

The similarities are far greater than the difference-man and mouse share a comman ancestor that lived more than 70 million years ago-which has allowed scientists to find treatments for a good many human diseases.

British members of the project say the draft mouse genome, published in the journal Nature, has provided the “phrasebook” for scientists to translate the language of the human genome.

“The entire biomedical research community said for the first time fully using this resource to deal with human diseases. They will now have powerful tools that will serve them for many years to come,” said Dr. Jane Rogers, head of sequencing at the Welcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge, which did 20 percent of the work.

Comparisons show almost every gene in the mouse has a corresponding(对应的) gene in humans-a 99 percent similarity that should help to find how each human gene works. Already the work has been able to show that man and mouse each have about 30,000 genes yet only 300 or so are unique to either species, increasing the value of the lab mouse as a “model” for human genetics.

This is an extraordinary milestone. For the first time we have an opportunity to see ourselves in an evolutionary(进化的) mirror. The mouse genome stands for a very important chapter in the lab notebook of evolution. By taking away genes to create sick mice, scientists have been able to reproduce a number disorders. Knowing the entire genomes of humans and mice will enable them to employ the technique more widely leading to a rapid development in the understanding of illnesses.

50.The importance of the discovery lies in the fact that __________.

A.man has finally found his true ancestor

B.it will be easier for people to find the causes of human diseases and cure them

C.it has enabled the scientists to compare human DNA with that of another mammal

D.it makes it possible for man to understand the complicated language of his genome

51.The word “unique” in the fifth paragraph probably means ___________.

A.having no like or equal B.the same

    C.corresponding D.excellent

52.It can be inferred that _____________.

A.almost every gene of a mouse works in the same way as that of a human being

B.it has become easier for humans to find their real ancestor

C.more mice will be used in scientific experiments

WASHINGTON-Laura Straub is a very worried woman. Her job is to find families for French teenagers who expect to live with American families in the summer. It’s not easy, even desperate.

“We have many children left to place: 40 out of 75,” said Straub, who works for a Paris-based foreign-exchange programme called LEC. When exchange programmes started 50 years ago, family life was more accommodating(接纳). All families accepted them. For one thing, more mothers stayed home.

But now, increasing number of women work outside the home. Exchange-student programmes have struggled in recent years to sign up host families for 30,000 teenagers who annually come from abroad to spend an academic(学术) year in the United States, as well as the thousands more who participate in the summer programmes.

School systems in many parts of the US, unhappy about accepting non-taxpaying students, have also strictly limited the number of exchange students they accept. At the same time, the idea of hosting foreign students is becoming less exotic.

In searching for host families, who usually receive no pay, exchange programmes are increasingly broadening their appeals to include everyone from young to retirees.

“We are open to many different types of families,” said Vickie Weiner, eastern regional director for ASSE, a 25-year-old programme that sends about 30,000 teenagers on academic-year exchange programes worldwide.

For elderly people, exchange students “keep us young-they really do”, said Jean Forster, who is hosting 16-year-old Nina Ports from Denmark.

54.Vickis Weiner is the person who ___________.

A.works for a programme called LEC B.works for a programme called ASSE

A.all the families could hosts foreign students

B.only young couples could host foreign students

C.only those who were retired could host foreign students

D.those who were not too old could host foreign students

57.Which of the following is the best title of this passage?

A.US Struggle to Find Host Families

B.Idea of Hosting Students Is Different

    C.Foreign-exchange Program Is Going On

When the 29th Olympic Games is held in Beijing in 2008, it will be a place where all our dreams come true.

And the building that will hold those dreams is to be based on a nest-like design, planned jointly by Swiss and Chinese architects. The plan is for the main Olympic stadium: the National Stadium. Nest-like walls surrounding the stadium like a steel net proved to be a popular design. It won more than half the votes of over 6,000 visitors to an exhibition of 13 possible designs, which ended on March 31. Before the exhibition, the leading plan had been chosen as one of three top designs from 13 possible plans. The official announcement for the final winning design will be made sometime this month.

Guan Zhaoye, chairman of the group of official judges, said, “The top design is a perfect meeting of elegance(典雅) and simplicity.” The stand(看台) is a bowl-shape running circle. “People’s attention can focus on the competitive events instead of the stadium itself,” said Li Xinggang, one of the architects. “The excited crowds will become part of the building itself and they will stimulate(激发) the athletes.”

Many visitors said that the model is unusual, practical and mixes modern architecture with traditional Chinese culture. “I think it shows the idea of a nest where new life grows up. It is a really good idea,” said one visitor. But others disagreed and were unhappy about the building looking like a bird cage.

The 80,000-seat stadium, to be built in north Beijing, will host the opening and closing ceremonies(仪式) as well as track-and-field(田径) events during the 2008 Olympics. Construction work is set to start at end of this year.

58.After the Sydney Olympic Games, the 29th Olympic Games will be held in __________.

    A.Atlanta B.Barcelona C.Beijing D.Athens(雅典)

A.It is designed jointly by Swiss and Chinese architects and look like a bird cage

B.It is a perfect meeting of elegance and simplicity.

C.It is unusual, practical and mixes modern architecture with traditional Chinese culture.

D.It shows the idea of a nest where new life and dreams grow up.

60.According to the passage, which of the following is not right?

A.Some people still disagree with the design.

B.The stadium will begin to be built in the south of Beijing at the end of this year.

第三节 书面表达

Good afternoon, everyone. On the morning of April 29, 2007, from 10:00 to 11:00, hundreds of millions of students from primary, middle schools and universities all over China joined in a national student sports program. Eleven million students in Jiangsu took an active part in this program.

The Ministry of Education calls on students to exercise for an hour every day, in the hope that they will have good health to work fifty years and enjoy the whole life.

Personally, I think it a good idea for us senior 3 students to have daily exercise. Although we take an hour a day for exercise, it is well worth it. Taking exercise helps us build up our body and keep a clear mind. Therefore, we can work more efficiently.

Thank you.
