This is a diagram of a farm. The arrow marks north. The farm lies to the west of the city, one hour away by train. The farm is 1.5 miles wide and 2 miles long. The office building stands in the middle of the farm. To the left of the building is a chicken house and to the right a garage. There is a garden in front of the building and a playground behind it. Half the farm is taken up by wheat fields in the north, and the other half by corn fields in the south. There is a well near the corn fields and a small reservoir beside the wheat fields. Trees are planted around the farm to prevent the crops from being blown down by strong winds.

W：What did you do after you lost your passport?

M：I went to see the foreign student advisor, and he reported it to the Passport Office in Washington.

M：I’d like to, but I have to pick up some sandwiches before the children get home from school.

M：I’m sorry. I couldn’t possibly get them done by then. Saturday afternoon would be the earliest time that you could have them.

W：Well, in that case, I’ll borrow one from Mary.

W：Thanks, but not today. I am in a hurry. Maybe some other time.

W：Can I see your license, please?

M：What’s the matter, officer? Did I do something wrong?

W：You were speeding.

M：I was speeding?

W：You certainly were. Do you have any idea how fast you were going?

M：I’m not sure. But I think I was going about 35.

W：This street is a 25-mile-per-hour-speed zone.

M：It is?

W：In this state, the speed limit in a business area is 25. Did you see the signs along the street?

M：I’m sorry, officer. I guess I didn’t notice. I was busy thinking of my job interview. It’s my first time here.

W：Well, since it’s your first time in this city, I will just give you a warning this time. But be careful not to speed again.

M：Someone came late last night looking for you. I told him you were out and suggested that he leave a note, but he didn’t.

W：Late last night? That’s strange. What did he look like?

M：He seemed to be about thirty-five or a little older. Maybe forty or so.

W：Was he tall or short?

M：He wasn’t very tall, nor very short. About average height, I think.

W：Was he fat or thin?

M：A bit on the thin side, if I remember correctly. Anyway, certainly not fat, but then he wasn’t very thin either.

W：Was there anything unusual about his looks? What kind of face did he have—round, square or long?

M：Let me think…It was rather square, but not very. Or was it? Really, I didn’t notice. It was so late and the lighting wasn’t good.

W：Was he wearing glasses?

M：Was he or wasn’t he? I’m not sure now. You see, I was so tired and sleepy I didn’t pay much attention.

I had to go to Amsterdam last week for a conference. I arrived at the airport in plenty of time and checked in. But I only had one small case, so I decided to take it on the plane as handluggage. As the flight was not due to board for 45 minutes, I went to a cafe, sat down and ordered a cup of coffee.

While I was sitting there, drinking my coffee and reading the paper, I was vaguely aware of a woman and her child coming to sit at the next table. I did not pay much attention to them, though. And when my flight was called, I reached for my case and left.

　　An hour later, the plane was in the air and I decided to look at the conference programme to see what I wanted to attend. Imagine my horror when I opened the case and found that it was full of picture books and children’s toys. And imagine what the woman must have thought about a case full of men’s clothes and scientific papers.
