Steven Felton is a man with a mission (任务) . He gave up his job to follow his childhood dream-finding the Lock Ness monster (鬼怪).
Mr Felton , aged 34 , left his home in southwest England to live by the loch (湖) in the Scottish highlands . Now he is Britain’s only professional monster-hunter , endlessly driving his car up and down the 38-kilometre shoreline of the loch .

Mr Felton says that one sighting of an unexplained “disturbance” on the water by himself plus a large collection of other sightings by other people has led him to believe that there are 20 to 30 Loch Ness monsters. He is certain that the “animal” is about the size of a minibus and has a back shaped like an upturned boat .
His faith in the monster’s existence goes back to his childhood when his family took him on a picnic to the loch at the age of seven. “I got hooked (钩住) on the Loch Ness monster as a kid, and I still find it fascinating that in the British Isles , which is all completely mapped out and about which we know almost everything , there is still a mystery unexplained .”
Since he arrived in Scotland six years ago, the stories he has collected, together with information from the occasional visiting scientific research team have made him believe in the existence of the “animal”. “The scientists often say they have found something, but nothing conclusive. But it all adds a little each time,” he said .
His family are quite proud of his great interest in the Loch Ness monster. Asked if he ever feels lonely, Mr. Felton emphasizes, “I know I am in the place where I want to be.” His search has made him popular with some of the people who live around the loch. Be careful of those who use the truth to deceive (欺骗) . When someone tells you something that is true , but leaves out important information that should be included , he can create a false impression .
For example , a man once told me , “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery . It was great . I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars !”
This guy’s a winner , right ? Maybe , maybe not . Then later I discovered that he bought two hundred tickets , and only one was a winner . He was really a big loser !
He didn’t say anything that was false , but he omitted important information on purpose . That’s called a half-truth . Half-truths are not technically lies , but they are just as dishonest .
Untrustworthy candidates (候选人) in political campaigns often use this trick . Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term , her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs . Then she seeks another term . One of her opponents (对手) runs an ad saying , “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs !” That’s true . However , an honest statement would have been quite different .
Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths . It’s against the law to make false claims , so they try to mislead you with the truth . An ad might blow its own horn , “Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation .
This kind of deception happens too often .It’s a sad fact of life : Lies are lies , and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

A small group of people
around the world have started implanting (移植) microchips to link the body and the computer .
Mr Donelson and three friends , who had driven 100 miles from their homes in Lockport , New York , to have the implants put in by Dr Jesse Villemaire , whom they had persuaded to do the work , are part of a small group , about 30 people around the world , who have independently put in microchips , into their bodies , according to Web-based reports .
At a shop William Donelson was having a four-millimeter-wide needle put into his left hand . “I’m set,” he said with a deep breath . Later , the publication Nature studied Wikipedia and a well-known printed encyclopedia , Britannica, to see which had more mistakes . It found an average of four mistakes in a Wikipedia article , and three in an article in Britannica’s . Wikipedia supporters note that they are able to correct information when they find a mistake . Written publications are not able to do this .
Wikipedia started in 2001. The word “wiki” comes from “wiki wiki” which means “quickly” in the Hawaiian language . Reports say it is the largest single source of information ever in history . It is also one of the fastest growing sites on the Internet .
It offers more than 3,000,000 articles in more than 200 languages . Each month , it records over two thousand million page visits . Jimmy Wales helped start Wikipedia . Very often you come across an empty classroom with the lights still on . It’s not difficult to find evidence of wasting water , a very serious problem .
