A
At nine most mornings the same scene is repeated in office buildings around the world.
An employee walks into the lift with his boss and apart from a mumbled(咕噜的)“good morning”,the junior is lost for words. That's an opportunity missed, say experts, who believe that such an obviously dull 30-second conversation can be invaluable for those who want to climb the career(职业)ladder.“Small talk can help set up a relationship upon which you can build,” says Dusseldorf communications advisor Torsten Knobble.
As a matter of fact, the importance of small talk goes far beyond the relationship to one's boss.People who fail the art of speaking a lot without actually saying anything find it harder to cultivate relationship in the workplace, believe Ulrich Goldschmidt, directer of the senior management association VDF in Essen.
“Small talk is an essential (necessary) part of networking,” he says.Actually every conversation begins and ends with small talk, according to Wolf Lasko, who has written a book on the topic and its bearing on career futures.
Not everyone is good at small talk.It takes skills to pick the right moment and the right topic with which to start a conversation. There are plenty of topics although some are not suitable for informal chat.Safe topics include holidays, the movies, music or sports.Besides, body language is part of small talk; it's not a good idea to stand around with arms folded.
Small talk is a question of closeness and distance. For a few employees,it's never a bad idea to hold back at the beginning and familiarize themselves with the company culture first.
56.The main subject discussed in the text is that ________.
A.small talk needs skill
B.every conversation begins and ends with small talk
C.small talk is a question of closeness and distance

A.He is not familiar with the boss and the company.
B.He doesn't expect that his boss will be with him.
C.He is not good at developing a relationship.
D.He is not interested in holidays, music or sports.
58.The underlined word “cultivate” in the text probably means “________”.
A.develop B.break up
C.familiarize D.bring up
59.We may infer from the text that ________.

B.people who fail the art of speaking do not want to climb the career ladder
C.any topic is suitable for small talk
D.not everyone is good at picking the right topic with which to start a conversation

If you are out walking in the countryside, and you happen to come across an area of dry, sandy soil, you may find some small holes in the ground, shaped like an upside-down cone(圆锥体),perfectly round at the top and tapering(逐渐变细)down to a point. If you then get a piece of grass, and gently touch the side of this hole, making a few grains of sand fall to the bottom,a little creature may finally appear, looking for a meal.
The creature is called an ant lion, and the hole or pit is the method it uses to catch its food. The ant lion is actually the wormlike young of an insect. It digs its pit by crawling backwards in a small circle. It uses one of its front legs to pile sand up on its head, and then twists(扭转)its head quickly, throwing the sand out of the pit.Round and round it goes,in smaller and smaller circles, throwing out the sand, until it has created a pit of about 5 centimeters in diameter(直径)at the top,and 3 or 4 centimeters deep.Next it buries itself at the bottom, with just its strong jaws showing. Then it sits and waits with great patience.
Finally,an ant or another small insect will come by,and step into the pit.If it falls to the bottom, the ant lion will seize it in its jaws, and eat it.But if the ant tries to climb up the side of the pit,the falling sand will warn the ant lion at the bottom, and it will throw up sand with its head, causing a small fall of sand which will make the ant fall back down again,to its death.

Polly Jones lived on a farm. She had lived there all her life, all twelve years of it.Her father, who managed the farm, had just lifted the potato crop.Prices were high; he wanted to sell the crop as quickly as he could.
Polly wandered over the rough field looking for the smaller potatoes that the pickers had accidentally missed. She found one, then another, then a handful. She was pleased. They were delicious once cooked. Then she caught sight of something else.It looked like a piece of colored stone.Polly picked it up and thought how pretty it was.She could see a pattern on it:a picture of a fish and a part of a leaf. She scraped(擦去)the soil away around her feet and found that she was standing on what seemed to be a piece of pavement(铺路石).Stuck to another piece of stone was something small and round like a button. She realized it was an old coin.
The field was busy the next morning though not with potato pickers. In front of the house where the farm machinery usually stood were several cars and a police van.A group of distinguished-looking men and women had appeared the morning after her father's telephone call. The local television station had shown some pictures of the field with Polly pointing to the place where she had found her pavement. It was proving to be of Roman origin and was being described as the most exciting thing that had happened in the area since the end of the Second World War.In those days an American airbase had occupied the site of the potato field.
A week later about forty students arrived from the local university. That afternoon a truck with equipment arrived. The excavation(挖掘)was officially under way.Permission had been given and the “dig”,as it was called, was expected to last several months.Polly wondered how the everyday work of the farm would get done with so many strange people around and cars coming and going all day long. All the unusual activity had made the cows and sheep restless. Her father said their cows produced less milk.
Still,it was interesting and great fun. They had let her keep the gold coin.
From then on,Polly would always walk carefully over potato fields.

Hollywood suggests glamour(魅力),a place where the young star-struck teenagers could, with a bit of luck, fulfill their dreams.Hollywood suggests luxurious houses with vast palm-fringed swimming pools, cocktail bars and furnishings(装修) fit for millionaires. And some big movie stars became millionaires overnight.A few of them lost their glamour quite suddenly and were left with nothing but emptiness and colossal debts.
Movies were first made in Hollywood before World War Ⅰ.The constant sunshine and mild climate of southern California made it an ideal site for shooting motion pictures.Hollywood's fame and fortune reached its peak in the 1930s and 1940s,the golden days of the black and white movies. Most of the famous motion pictures corporations of those days,Columbia and Warner Brothers are still very much in business.
In those days Hollywood was like a magnet(磁体),drawing ambitious young men and women from all over the world.
Most of them had only their good looks to recommend them and had no acting experience—or ability—what so-ever.Occasionally they got jobs,if they were lucky enough to be noticed.Gary Cooper was one of the few who was noticed. He started as a stunt(绝技) rider, and from there rose to be one of the great stars of the early Westerns.
As for stars themselves, they were held on a tight rein by the studio chiefs who could make and break all but stars with really big appeal. The stars were“persuaded”to sign contracts, under which the stars did not have the right to choose their parts.Only when they ceased to be stars did some of them discover that they were good actors!
Hollywood is no longer the heart of the motion picture industry, but it has not lost all its glamour and the Hollywood studios are still standing.
72.What can be the appropriate title for the passage?
A.Hollywood Today

73.According to the passage, some of the actors did not realize they were wonderful until they________.
A.tried their best to be an actor

C.Objective. D.Indifferent.
75.It can be inferred from the passage that the fate of the Hollywood stars are mostly controlled by ________.
A.themselves B.film makers
C.the audience D.the role they play

I saw a really good video last night when I was taking care of the kids.My sister asked me to look after my two nieces for a couple of hours while she went to the doctor's.They're both nine years old—they're twins.I was a bit tired but I know they love watching films,so on my way to the house I went to the video shop and rented a Disney classic.I'd seen it myself 20 years before when I was their age,so I was sure they'd enjoy it,and I was right. My nieces love dogs and as the film is about two dogs who fall in love, they sat in front of the TV for over an hour without moving! It's a complicated love story because one of the dogs lives in the rich part of town and is very carefully looked after and has everything a dog could want, but the other is a street dog who lies on the poor side of town and has nothing. So it’s a bit like Romeo and Juliet! But of course it’s a Disney film,so there’s a happy ending.Everybody who’s seen the film always remembers the scene when the two dogs are eating a plate of bone which ends in a kiss!
