When you woke this morning, did you look forward joyously to the day?
When you go to bed tonight, do you think you will be filled with satisfaction? Do you think the place where you are is precious?
It is to you who cannot say right away, “Yes, of course” that I send this message.
If you read this, the things around you might start to look a little different.
In the world today, 6 billion 300 million people live.
If this world were shrunk to the size of a village.
What would it look like?
If 100 people lived in this village.
52 would be women, 48 would be men. 30 would be children, 70 would be adults.
7 would be aged.
70 would be nonwhite, 30 would be white.
61 would be Asian, 13 African, 13 from North and South America,12 Europeans, and the remaining one from the south Pacific.
17 would speak Chinese, 9 English, 8 Hindi and Urdu, 6 Spanish, 6 Russian, and 4 would speak Arabic. That would account for half the village. The other half would speak Bengal, Portuguese, Indonesian, Japanese, German, French, or some other language.
In such a village with so many sorts of folks, it would be very important to learn to understand people different from yourself and to accept others as they are.
But consider this. Of the 100 people in this village, 20 are undernourished(营养不良的), 1 is dying of starvation, while 15 are overweight.
Of the wealth in this village, 6 people own 59% (all of them from the United States), 74 people own 39% and 20 people share the remaining 2%.
75 people have some supply of food and a place to shelter them from the wind and the rain, but 25 do not.17 have no clean, safe water to drink.
If you have money in the bank, money in your wallet and spare change somewhere around the house, then you are among the richest 8.
If you have a car, you are among the richest 7 .
Among the villagers, 1 has a college education.2 have computers. 14 cannot read.
If you can speak and act according to your faith without harassment(骚扰), imprisonment(监禁), torture(酷刑) or death, then you are more fortunate than 48, who can not.
If you do not live in fear of death by bombardment(轰炸), landmines, or of kidnapping(绑架), then you are more fortunate than 20 who do.
In one year, 1 person in the village will die, but in the same year, 2 babies will be born, so that at the year’s end the number of villagers will be 101.
So sing from the bottom of your heart, dance with your body waving free, and live, putting your soul into it.
And when you love, love as though you have never been wounded, even if you have.
And love the fact that you and others, live here in this village.
Perhaps if enough of us learn to love our village, it may yet be possible to save it from being torn apart.

British author Andrea Levy won the 2004 Orange Prize for Fiction June 8 with her story about Jamaican migration(迁居)to London after World War II.
The 30,000 pound international prize is awarded for the best novel of the year written in English by a woman.
Judges hailed her book “Small Island” as a “compassionate account of the problems of postwar immigration(移民)”.
“She describes a little known aspect of recent British history with wit and wisdom,” broadcaster Sandi Toksvig said.
Levy told the prize’s Website she wanted to write about that period because it was part of her family’s history.
“All my novels have started from a place that is in some way personal to me. Although my novels are not autobiographical(自传体的), they have all been about exploring what it is and means to be black and British,”she said.
Levy was born in England to Jamaican parents. Her father was on the Empire Windrush ship which sailed from the Caribbean to England in 1948 with around 500 West Indian men wanting to start a new life in Britain.
The voyage came to symbolize the start of the great postwar wave of Caribbean immigration to Britain.
Last year’s winner was American author Valerie Martin for “Property”, a story of slavery in the United States.

Some movies are better left without a remake, and this do-over of “The King and I” happens to be one of them. “Anna and the King” tries hard, but is very unrealistic
An English school teacher, Anna (Jodie Forster) is hired by the king of Siam(Chow Yun-Fat) to teach his many children. As soon as everyone gets to know each other, a civil war erupts between the king and his brother. Unbelievably, the teacher comes up with a plan to defeat the enemy, and everything works out perfectly.
The other aspect of this story is the “romance.” The king and his outspoken teacher flirt (调情) throughout the movie and dance once or twice, but never really face their feelings. I found it humorous the way they surprise each other at night, as if neither can wait to see the other the next day. There is never a reason for the other to show up, it just happens. The two almost kiss, but are interrupted. The whole charade(容易被看穿的姿态) is funny!
As a matter of fact, the story is about an English woman who argues with the king about everything. As you can imagine, this becomes dull after a while. You would expect the king to get fed up, but he does not. In fact, he likes her more because of it.
The characters are annoying and the plot boring. You might learn a little something about Siam, but the movie is not historically accurate, or worth the money to rent.
66. By saying “Some movies are better left without a remake, and this do-over of ‘The King and I’ happens to be one of them.” , the author means that ______.
A.this movie is wonderful B.this movie is historically accurate
C.this move is boring D.it’s worth seeing the movie many times

69. Which description of the English teacher is right?

C.the author dislikes the actors’ performances
D.the author will not see the movie again

More and more children take medicines to treat depression(抑郁) and other problems such as aggressiveness and lack of self-control. In fact, a new study says Americans spent more on behavior-related drugs for children last year than on antibiotics(抗生素) or asthma(哮喘) medicines. The research shows that spending increased seventy-seven percent between 2000 and 2003.
One reason was increased use. The report says the number of children on behavioral drugs increased more than twenty percent. But these medicines also cost more than traditional drugs for problems like infections. And patients usually stay on behavioral medicines longer.
The report is by a company that administers drug plans for health care providers around the country. Medco Health Solutions studied the records of three-hundred-thousand young people up to age nineteen. It found that among children who take at least one medicine from their doctor, nearly nine percent are on a behavior-related drug. Medco says five percent of all children in the United States take behavioral medicine.
Some of the largest increases involve medicines to treat attention deficit-hyper-activity disorder. The study says spending for such drugs last year increased three-hundred-sixty-nine percent for children under age five. Companies have been developing new treatments for children who have difficulty learning and staying calm.
Also, Medco says spending for anti-depressants for children grew twenty-five percent between two-thousand and last year. Use of these drugs increased by twenty-seven percent.
Some parents say anti-depressants and other behavioral drugs have improved their children’s lives. But others worry that too many young people are being given such medicines and that some drugs could be harmful.
In March, the United States Food and Drug Administration asked makers of anti-depressants to include a warning statement. The agency says health care providers should carefully observe adults and children who take these drugs.
Scientists are looking into the possibility that some patients might become more depressed and try to kill themselves. This might be especially true at the beginning of treatment or when the amount of medicine is increased or decreased.
71.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Spending on behavior-related drugs for children is increasing.
B.The reasons for spending more and more money on behavior-related drugs for children.
C.The problems with behavior-related drugs for children.
D.Behavior-related drugs are more harmful than useful for children.
72.Which of the following is the general idea of the second paragraph?
A.The number of the children on behavioral drugs increased a lot.
B.Behavioral drugs are very expensive.
C.Patients need to use behavioral drugs for a long time.
D.The reasons for spending more money on behavioral drugs.
73.What does the underlined word “agency” in the seventh paragraph refer to?
A.Medco Health Solutions.
B. The United States Food and Drug Administration.
C.The company developing new treatments for children.
D. The US government.
74.Which of the following statements is FALSE?
A.Behavioral drugs may do great harm to patients.
B.Makers of anti-depressant will have to include a warning statement.
C.Behavioral drugs don’t have any bad effect on children’s lives.
D.Behavioral drugs are mainly used to treat children with depression and other problems.
75.What can we conclude from the passage?
A.More and more children are suffering from depression and lack of self-control.

D.Children are not likely to kill themselves after taking behavioral drugs.

56.C 考查细节与常识理解。船只沉了只能是通知COAST GUARD(美国海岸警卫队)来理。
57.D 考查理解辨认。从第一段最后一句可知。
58.B 考查正误判断。poison是“中毒”,凡中毒事件应该打电话232-2120,而不是打给
F.B.I.(美国联邦调查局)。
从…are better left without a remake(重新制作),并结合全文最后一段
76.specially---especially 77.give---given 78.to→on 79. 正确 80.But---And
81. 去a 82.play→playing 83. can 后加also 84.healthy---health 85.of 前加use

M:Shall we watch TV for a while?
W:I don’t like American TV.People keep hitting each other and shooting each other.
M:Yes,some of the shows are quite violent. But maybe life is like that.
W:I don’t believe it.The people here I’ve met are very kind.
M:So are the people I know. But look at the newspapers. There’s a lot of violence in every paper.
W:Maybe nice people are not interesting enough.
M: You’re probably right.People won’t buy newspapers unless there’s exciting news in them.
W:Is that why there’s so much violence on TV?Won’t people watch a lot unless violent things happen?
M:I don’t know.A lot of people like shows about the Old West, with cowboys and Indians fighting each other.I don’t like them myself.
W:Neither do I.
M:They won’t actually show how people really lived in the Old West.
W:Of course not.

Text 10
Some people dream of being President of the United States, some of becoming stars in a Hollywood movie, and others of making millions of dollars over night. Could a dream like that come true in real life? Well, it did happen to Peter Johnson. Peter drove a truck. One day, he walked into the Union-Trust Bank in Baltimore, and took 5,000 dollars that did not belong to him. The guards and other employees stood back and let him stuff the bills into his shirt and pants without trying to prevent him from taking the money. No one pulled the gun. No one called the police. Why did they allow him to get away with it? Well, everything was legal. Peter had won a contest organised by a Baltimore radio station. The first prize allowed him to enter the Union-Trust Bank and gather up as much money as he could lay his hands on within 5 minutes. Because he could not bring any large sacks or boxes into the bank, all the money had to be placed in his pockets. As the time went by, Peter ran about wildly and tried to pick up as many large bills as he could find. When his time was up, he was out of breath, but was 5,000 dollars richer.
