第三部分: 阅读理解(共20小题,每题2分,满分40分)

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C和D中,选出最佳答案。

( A )

Play is the important business of childhood, and more and more research in recent years has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From infancy (婴儿期), every child needs opportunity and the right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys. Their main function is to suggest, encourage and assist play. To succeed in this they must be good toys, which children will play with them often, and will come back to again and again. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child’s development.

In recent years research on infant development has shown the standard a child is likely to reach is largely determined in the first three years of his life. So a baby’s ability to profit from the right play materials should not be underestimated (低估). A baby who is encouraged and stimulated, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully.

In the next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds (界线). Every type of suitable toy should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability.

By the third stage of play development — from five to seven or eight years old — the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the child most enjoys.

Until the age of seven or eight, play and work mean much the same to a child. But once reading has been mastered, then books and school become the main source of learning. Toys are still interesting and valuable, and they lead on to new hobbies, but their significance has changed to a child of nine or ten years, toys and games mean, as to adults, relaxation and fun.

56. According to the passage, when a child grows up ______.

  1. he should be given fewer toys
  2. he should choose his own toys
  3. he should be given different toys
  4. he should be given more and more toys

57. Who have the best chance to grow up successfully?

  1. Those who grow up all by themselves.
  2. Those who are given a lot of toys to play with.
  3. Those who have playmates to share the toys they have.
  4. Those who are given a lot of toys, talked to and played with.

58. According to the passage, a child is very curious when he is ______.

  A. two years old B. four years old

  C. six years old             D. eight years old

59. The passage is mainly about ______.

  A. the importance of schooling   B. the role of play in a child’s development

  C. the choice of toys for youths   D. the importance of pre-school education

( B )

Why are so many people so afraid of failure? Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure becomes an experience that will lead to growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.

Most parents work hard at either preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower the standards. A mother describes her child’s hurriedly-made table as “perfect”! Even though it couldn’t stand on even (not same in height) legs. Another way is to shift blame. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.

The trouble with failure-prevention methods is that they leave a child unequipped for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time—and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even when we don’t win. A child who’s not invited to a birthday party, who doesn’t make the horror roll or the baseball team feel terrible, of course. But parents should not offer a quick comfort prize or say “It doesn’t matter”, because it does. The young should be allowed to experience disappointment and be helped to master it.

Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grown-ups and children exactly alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it. Step one is to ask “Why did I fail?”. Control the impulse (冲动) to blame someone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about asking them.

60. This passage mainly tells us about ______.

  A. how to make a failure       B. the reason why people fail

  C. the ways to prevent failures D. the importance of facing failures

61. When the writer says “every person has the right to fail”, he means ______.

  1. no one is perfect
  2. the world is full of failures
  3. failures are quite common in our lives
  4. no one can grow up mentally without failures

62. By “protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed”, the writer means that most parents try their best ______.

  1. to let children know that they won’t fail
  2. to keep their children from realizing that they failed
  3. not to teach their children about knowledge of failure
  4. to provide their children for the knowledge against failure

63. According to the writer, what should a child know in the real world?

  1. He should be well equipped for life.
  2. No parents should offer quick consideration.
  3. No one can be best all the time at everything.
  4. He can get pleasure from failure as well as success.

Most people say Venice, Italy, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The city is so scenic that artists have been drawing pictures of it for hundreds of years. Scientists have studied old paintings of the city to find out how fast Venice is sinking.

Venice was built on a series of small islands in a lagoon (礁湖), an area of water that is not very deep, within the Adriatic Sea. Instead of streets, the city has many canals. Many people use boats to get from one place to another. The city floods often when the tide rises.

For years, scientists have known that Venice has been sinking. But they could not say for sure when it started to sink. “I thought the city’s sinking might be a relatively recent happening,” said one scientist.

By comparing the water level in the canals today with the water level shown in the paintings, scientists have learned that the city has sunk more than 2 feet since 1727.

To determine that number and date, the scientists studied eight paintings by an 18th-century artist named Canaletto and three by his nephew. Both artists created very detailed paintings of the city.

Experts don’t know whether Venice will ever completely sink into the lagoon. But the art of Venice has proved there is a problem. Many scientists are trying to find a way to save the city. Some of them want to build floodgates that will rise or drop as the water level changes.

Most of us are used to seasons. Each year, spring follows winter, which follows autumn, which follows summer, which follows spring. And winter is colder than summer. But the earth goes through temperature cycles over much longer periods than those that we experience.

Between 65,000 and 35,000 years ago, the planet was much colder than it is now. During that time the temperature also changed a lot, with periods of warming and cooling. Ice melted during the warm periods, which made sea levels rise. Water froze again during the cold periods.

A new study from Switzerland sheds light on where ice sheets melted during the ice age.

It now seems that the ice melted at both ends of the earth, rather than just in either northern or southern areas. This surprised the researchers from the University of Bern.

Scientists have long assumed that most of the ice that melted was in the Northern hemisphere (半球) during the 30,000-year-long ice age. That belief was held because the North Pole is surrounded by land, while the South Pole is surrounded by the Antarctic Ocean. It is easier for ice sheets to grow on land. If surrounded by sea, the ice can easily just slip to the ocean instead of building up.

The researchers used a computer model to look at the ways the ice could melt and how it might affect sea levels. They compared these results to evidence of how temperatures and currents actually changed during that time.

The model sowed that if it was only in the Northern hemisphere that ice melted, there would be a bigger effect on ocean currents (洋流) and sea temperatures than what actually happened. Studies show that melting just in the Southern hemisphere would have been impossible, too.

The only reasonable conclusion, the scientists would make, was that the ice melted equally in the North and South.

It is still a mystery as to what caused the temperature changes that caused the ice to melt.

72. The underlined phrase “sheds light on” (in Para. 3) can be replaced by ______.

  A. throws doubts on         B. makes it clear

  C. beats down on          D. makes light of

73. We can learn from the text that ______.

A. what caused ice to melt is still unknown

B. we have experienced temperature cycles since they began

C. before the new study, scientists long believed that ice melted just in either northern or southern areas

D. the planet was much colder than it is now between 65,000 and 35,000 years ago, during which time temperature hardly changed

74. The first two paragraphs were written ______.

A. to explain what a temperature cycle is

B. to compare climate nowadays with that of the ice age

C. to describe what the weather was like during the ice age

D. to lead up to the subject that ice melted during the 30,000-year-long ice age

75. Which of the following best shows the relationship between ice, ocean currents and temperatures according to the text?

A. Ice can easily just slip into the ocean.

B. Ice melted and then froze again due to temperature.

C. Temperatures and currents changed as a result of ice melting.

D. Temperature changes lead to ice melting or water freezing, which in turn has an effect on ocean currents and temperature.

W: Now let me see…. Oh, I’ve got an appointment from 7:30 to 9:00 this evening, and after that I have to prepare my lessons for tomorrow. Would tomorrow evening be all right with you?

W: Some people eat too much fat and sugar.

W: We did a lot of manual labor, but now most of us are doing mental labor.

M: Yes, we don’t need to as many as calories as we did before.

W: So we put on weight.

M: What should we do in order to keep fit?

听下面一段对话,回答第13 至第15三个小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

W: It’s difficult to find a suitable job this year. I have pressure.

M: Now college graduates are being encouraged to start their own business. It sounds really good for us. We can get some valuable social experience, which will be helpful to our future jobs. We may also know about ourselves and society better.

W: Yes, but it is not as easy as you imagine. There are a lot of problems. The main difficulty is money. And our education doesn’t provide enough knowledge on how to do it.

M: Maybe you are right. But our government allows college graduates to borrow money from banks and maybe some can get money from their parents.

W: But you have to pay back the money sooner or later. So some college graduates prefer to live a peaceful life rather than start their own business though job-hunting is very competitive.

M: Oh, they don’t have dreams. But I have made up my mind. How about you?

W: Well, it always takes time to consider before making a decision.

Possible Version:

Dear Mr. Principal,

I am a Senior 3 student. I’d like to say something about the canteen service in our school.

In general, the service is satisfactory. The hall is clean and tidy. The dishes look inviting and taste delicious as well. What’s more, the workers there treat us as their friends, which makes us feel very happy.

However, we feel the price of the meals is a little too high. Besides, we can only have a limited variety of dishes with little change every week. In addition, we often have to stand in line for a long time before we can get the meal. You should understand how precious time is to us students. Therefore, may I suggest something be done to solve the problem so that we can all enjoy our meals at school?

Thanks for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

                          Li Hua
