The story of the Kennedy brothers is rather like one of those songs which children sing happily and which end up with the shout, “And then there none.”
The eldest brother was killed in the war, John was shot in Dallas in 1963, Robert was murdered in 1968, and Edward’s chances of becoming president may have died when his car had an accident, killing the passenger.
The four boys were brought up by their father to do and fight for nothing but the best, whether on the games field or in political life. He managed to give them so much ambition and energy that only since the youngest brother found his political death, have people begun to ask themselves, “Why did we look on the Kennedys as the family chosen to lead the USA to a better future?”
In fact, John and Robert had both shown their ability and courage in international politics and their work for civil rights, and Edward had a good record as senator; but so had many other people. Only history will show how much of the Kennedy story was built on fact and how much on the famous family name.

For years and years people have been saying that the railways are dead. “We can do without railways.” People say…as if motorcars and planes have made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, that they’re dying. But this is far from the truth: In these days of expensive oil, the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they are cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes. A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What is more, it takes you from the heart of a city center. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does, in endless traffic jams, and a single train can carry goods which a plane or motorcar could never do.
Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive. Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey. Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning, for we have just entered the age of super-fast trains, trains traveling at 150 miles an hour and more. Soon we will be wondering why we spent so much on motorcars we can’t use because we have not enough money to buy the oil and planes we can’t fly for the same reason.
60. The writer’s idea seems to be that_____________.

C. When you get off the plane you will find yourself right in the city center.
D. No motorcar or plane can carry as many goods as a train does.
62. The writer thinks that the railways, far from being dead, are very much alive because _________.
A. we can have a smooth and untroubled journey
B. We’ll not have enough money to fly in planes
C. We can now travel in super-trains
D. All of the above
63. The best title for this passage may be “_____________”.
A. Not the end but the beginning B. Which is the best: train, motorcar or plane
C. Trains are more competitive than motorcars or planes D. Oh, super-fast train

Today’s buzz may be about online auctions, but you can still find bargains at old-fashioned sales, especially offbeat(希奇的) ones. Try to attend the preview (usually held the week before an auction) to check out merchandise. Many auctions require immediate payment and don’t accept personal checks. Get the details before you bid.

Ours has become a society of employees. A hundred years or so only one out of every five Americans at work was employed, i.e., worked for somebody else. Today only one out of five is not employed but working for himself. And when fifty years ago ‘being employed’ meant working as a factory laborer or as a farmhand, the employee of today is increasingly a middle-class person with a formal education, holding a professional or management job requiring intellectual and technical skills. Indeed, two things have characterized American society during these last fifty years: middle-class and upper-class employees have been the fastest-growing groups in our working population-----growing so fast that the industrial worker, that oldest child of the Industrial Revolution, has been losing in numerical importance despite the growth of industrial production.
Yet you will find little if anything written on what it is to be an employee. You can find a great deal of very doubtful advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion. You can also find a good deal of work in a chosen field, whether it is the mechanist’s trade or bookkeeping. Every one of these trades requires different skills, sets different standards, and requires a different preparation. Yet they all have employeeship in common. And increasingly, especially in the large business or in government, employeeship is more important to success than the special professional knowledge or skill. Certainly more people fail because they do not know the requirements of being an employee rather than because they do not adequately possess the skills of their trade; the higher you climb the ladder, the more you get into administrative or executive work, the greater emphasis on ability to work within the organization rather than on technical ability or professional knowledge.
68. It is implied that fifty years ago ______________.
A. eighty percent of American working people were employed in factories
B. twenty percent of American intellectuals were employees
C. the percentage of intellectuals in the total work force was almost the same as that of industrial workers.
D. the percentage of intellectuals working as employees was not so large as that of industrial workers.
69. According to the passage, with the development of modern industry __________.
A. factory laborers will overtake intellectual employees in number
B. there are as many middle-class employees as factory laborers
C. employers have seen great importance to factory laborers
D. the proportion of factory laborers in the total employee population has decreased.
70. According to the writer, professional knowledge or skill is ___________.
A. less important than awareness of being a good employee
B. as important as the ability to deal with public relations
C. more important than employer-employee relations
D. as important as the ability to co-operate with others in the organization
71. From the passage it can be seen that employeeship helps one ________.
A. to be more successful in his career B. to solve technical problems
C. to be more specialized in his fields D. to develop his professional skill

Sometime in future, the familiar early-morning newspaper on the front page will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You’ll get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching the TV on. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of the news you want. You’ll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer file if you like. These are among the predictions from communications experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of news
events.
Most of the technology is available now, but convincing more people that they don’t need paper to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance to computer newspapers may be stronger from within journalism. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable.
Despite technology advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint with computer screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to complete the changeover because people need to buy computers and because newspapers have established financial interests in the paper industry.
72. The best title for this passage is ____________________.
A. Computer Newspapers Are Well Liked
B. Newspapers Of The Future Will Likely Be On Computer
C. Newspapers Are Out Of Fashion D. New Communication Technology
73. It might take 30 to 40 years for computer newspapers to replace traditional newspapers, because ______________.
A. it is technologically impossible now
B. computer newspapers are too expensive
C. there is strong resistance from both the general population and professional journalism
D. you can easily save information for future use
74. Which of the following is not an advantage of computer newspapers?
A. They are cheaper than traditional newspapers B. They are very convenient to us.
C. You can get more information from them quickly
D.You can easily save information for future use
75. We can infer from the passage that ___________.
A. all technology changes are good B. all technologies will finally replace old ones
C. new technologies will finally replace old ones
D. traditional newspapers are here to stay for another century

Our class held a discussion on whether teenagers should be encouraged to fight for a just cause. The opinions are divided.
Some think fighting for a just cause is one of the traditional virtues of the Chinese people, which should be encouraged among the teenagers. The boy’s action will encourage more heroes to appear. It will in turn make our society more and more beautiful.
However, many more are strongly against this action. They think it is not wise for a teenager to do so. He is too young to save the child. What’s worse, it is very likely that the teenager would lose his life. We should value our lives. They suggest saving a drowning child in a wiser way. For example, we can turn to adults nearby for help or throw a piece of wood at the child.
