1. 对所提供文章中关键信息的正确判断和采集;
2. 适当的句型转换;
3. 正确地使用英语解释英语;
4. 原文细节信息的正确理解;

Passage 2
A large grey cat with a cunning (狡猾的) sparkle in his yellow eyes, chases a small, sweet looking, brown mouse. In the madness that follows in the kitchen, they destroy the icebox, ironing board (烫衣板), a sink full of dishes and litter the floor with broken eggs.
As the kitchen battle goes on, the final outcome is unknown to the participants. But to the audiences who watch, there is little doubt as to the identity (身份) of the victor — it will be the little mouse.
For the cat and mouse are Tom and Jerry, and this, of course is a Tom & Jerry cartoon.
The ever-fighting pair have chased each other from Hollywood to China to outer space. Their movie debut was 64 years ago, but the cartoons still play on TV and on video.
They even came top in a poll (调查) of Britain' s favourite cartoon characters.
The survey of l ,000 people aged between 18 and 50 was made in early October by a children' s TV channel.
"Tom & Jerry series are incredibly inventive and witty (诙谐的) with an endless stream of gags (恶作剧), which is why they appeal to all ages," said the channel manager.
Born out of the film "Puss Gets the Boot" in 1940 in Hollywood, Tom and Jerry have made audiences laugh all around the world. Created by US animators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the 161 cartoons have won seven Oscars.
The cartoon series came to China in the early 1990s and has been a hit ever since. "Although three words -- cat chases mouse -- are enough to describe the plot (剧情), Tom and Jerry are a lot more than that, said Zhang Ye, a Senior 1 girl from the Shi Jiazhuang Foreign Language School. "They are always doing new and crazy things to either catch or escape the other.

Passage 3
Celebrating New Year' s Day is one of the oldest and most exciting customs around the world. Since this festival marks the beginning of the year, New Year' s Day is thought of as a perfect time for a "clean start" or New Year' s resolutions. People worldwide resolve to act better in the year just beginning than in the year just ended.
No day has ever been observed on so many different dates or in so many different ways. All over the world, countries have their own special beliefs about what the New Year means to them.
In Scotland, the New Year is called Hogmanay. In the villages of Scotland, barrels of tar are set afire and then rolled down the streets. This ritual symbolizes that the old year is burned up and the new one is allowed to enter.
New Year' s Day is also the Festival of Saint Basil in Greece. Children leave their shoes by the fireside on New Year' s Day with the hope that Saint Basil, who is famous for his kindness, will come and fill their shoes with gifts.
The Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hashanah. It is a holy time when Jews recall the things they have done wrong in the past, and then promise to do better in the future. Special services are held in the synagogues, children are given new clothes and New Year loaves are baked to remind people of harvest time.
On New Year's Day in Japan, everyone gets dressed in their new clothes and homes are decorated with pine branches and bamboo -- symbols of long life.
In European countries such as Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands, families start the New Year by first attending church services. Afterwards, they visit friends and relatives. In Italy, boys and girls receive gifts of money on New Year's Day.

Passage 4
At present, there are five network firms — China Telecom, China Unicom, Jitong communications, China Netcom and China Mobile -- these are allowed to operate IP services in China. Each company has its advantages in service.
Charge
As the Ministry of Information Industry coordinates, the charges of IP calls of the five companies are the same, 0.3 yuan per minute for DDD calls, 4.8 yuan per minute for IDD calls, 2.50 yuan for calls from the mainland to Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and 1.5 yuan from $henzhen to Hong Kong, Zhongshan and Zhnhai to Macao. IP callers don't enjoy discounts on holidays.
Range
China Telecom has the widest coverage. All cities in China with telephone access and most countries in the world are open to China Telecom's IP card.
China Unicom' s IP card can reach 29 cities nationwide and more than 130 countries and regions worldwide. Jitong IP can access 12 cities in China and over 70 countries and regions worldwide.
China 'Netcom' s IP can reach 14 cities in China and 149 countries and regions in the world.
China Mobile' s IP card is open to only six cities nationwide but can access more than 200 countries and regions worldwide.
Voice quality
China Telecom realizes its IP services by the public Internet, therefore net congestion and voice delay may sometimes disturb conversations. The other four companies have their private data networks, which help to increase transmission speed and improve voice quality.
Other services
China Telecom, Jitong and China Mobile offer account transfer services. Users can transfer the remaining sum of money on one card to another card.
Jitong and Netcom link their services with bank cards. One can enjoy IP's service without an IP card. Bank card users can make IP phone calls with their bank card numbers, so they needn' t buy new IP cards and remember the new numbers again and again.
As for customer service, China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile provide free hot line service, while Jitong and Netcom charge for their services.

Did you know that the French Government wanted to build a sperm bank for roosters? All it wanted was to keep the breed pure.
Well, the lucky rooster, or cock , is one of the symbols of France: the Gallic rooster. It decorated the French flag during the Revolution and was the symbol of the French people.
During the Middle Ages, the Gallic Rooster was widely used as a religious symbol, a sign of hope and faith .It was the Revolution, several hundred years later, that made the rooster a symbol of national identity.
Napoleon Bonaparte later replaced the Republic with the Empire.And he replaced the rooster with the eagle .which he believed had greater symbolism.During World War I ,rising patriotic feeling once again made the Gallic rooster the symbol 0f France’s resistance and bravery.

Passage 6
When train fares went up for the third time in one year, I decided to buy a motorcycle ti ride to work. My idea was that, although I would have to pay for tax, insurance and gasoline, I would still spend less than on train tickets over the year. I might even save time on the journey from home to work. So I bought a small secondhand Japanese motorcycle.
I began to learn to ride it. At first it seemed very difficult for me because I had never learned to ride an ordinary bicycle before. But I soon got used to it. I just fell off once or twice during the first few weeks, But after a while I felt reasonably confident and rode to work every day, even when it was raining.
It is, of course, one of the disadvantages, riding a motorcycle in the rain. To keep dry you have to dress up in waterproof clothes, which soon get very dirty. And it’s cold in winter too. But my journey to work takes me half an hour less than it used to take me on the train. Traffic jams don’t worry me, and I don’t have to wait on cold railway platforms for crowded trains. I don’t know whether it’s cheaper than public transport, though, for I soon got dissatisfied with my small motorcycle and bought a bigger, faster and more expensive one.
Question:
Advantages | Disadvantages |
He spends ____2___ on the journey from home to work. He save ___3___ on the journey. He doesn’t have to worry about traffic jams. He doesn’t have to wait on the local railway platforms for ___5______. | He has to wear waterproof clothes __2__ . It’s cold riding motorcycle in winter. If he rides a big and fast one, it is not ____4___ than traveling by train. |
