My first performance in front of an audience was coming up soon.

I tried as hard as I could to remain calm, but my heart was racing. I stared down at my sweat-covered, shaking hands.

I looked up again at the audience, realizing that these were real people. They were not just my mum and dad, who would say, “Good job!” even if I messed up the entire piece.

What if I had the wrong music? What if I played the wrong notes? As it turned out, I was never able to answer these questions because the spotlight(聚光灯)was waiting for me. I grasped my hands tightly together, drying off the sweat.

Slowly I walked to the mud-brown piano in the center of the room. It contained 88 demanding keys, which were waiting impatiently to be played. I swallowed the golf-ball-sized lump(隆起部分)in my throat and sat down. Slowly, I opened the music. Next, I rested my still shaking hands on the ivory(象牙色的)keys.

As my fingers played across the keys, I was becoming more unsure of my preparation for this moment. But the memory of my years of training came flooding back. I knew that I had practiced this piece so many times that I could play it backwards if requested.

Although at one point I accidentally played two keys instead of the intended one, I continued to move my fingers automatically(自动地).

My eyes burned holes into (were fixed on) the pages in front of me.

There was no way that I was going to lose my concentration. To keep this to myself, I leaned forward and focused carefully on the music.

When l came to the end of the page, a warning went off inside my head: DON’T MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN YOU TURN THE PAGE!

Needless to say, 1 obeyed myself with all my heart and mind. And, proud of my “page-turning” feat(技艺), I finished the rest of the piece without making a single mistake.

After the final note died away, a celebration went into action inside my head. I had finished. I had mastered the impossible.

60 The author was nervous before the performance because _______.

A. his or her mother and father weren’t present

B. the strong spotlight was shining onto the stage

C. he or she hadn’t mastered the entire piece

D. he or she had never performed in public before

61. The underlined phrase “mess up” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.

B. He/She thought it was very difficult but successful.

C. He/She thought he/she had never made a mistake during the performance.

D.He/She thought he/she played through the piece carefully but light-heartedly.

An experimental treatment that causes AIDS patients to develop a dangerously high fever has shown promise as a way of prolonging(拖曳)and improving the patients’ life.

Called the Biologic-HT System, the new treatment lets doctors extract the blood of a patient and heat it before circulating it back into the body. The heated blood causes the patient’s body temperature to rise above 42 degrees Celsius. In people with AIDS, that increase in temperature kills some heat-sensitive HIV, the virus, most doctors say, causes AIDS.

Heating the blood of AIDS patients has been tried before, say doctors. But during previous attempts, the treatment induced deadly chemical changes in the blood. The Biologic-HT System prevents those changes from happening, allowing the heat to kill viruses with few ill side effects.

The new heat treatment cannot be considered a cure for Aids, says president of the company that makes the system. He says the treatment doesn’t kill all traces of the virus. However, it kills enough virus particles to give a patient’s immune system a reprieve(暂时减轻) in its deadly duel with HIV.

Tests of the Biologic-HT treatment began on 36 patients earlier this year. The treatment takes about four hours, and the patient normally feels well enough to leave the hospital or clinic the following morning.

So far, the patients who have had the treatment say they feel better and have developed no new opportunistic infections—disease that strike people with damaged immune systems. The patients also have experienced about a 50 percent increase in the number of T cells in their bodies. T cells are key disease-fighting cells of the immune system and the main target of HIV.

63. This passage is mainly concerned with ____________.

A. a way for treating AIDS B. a heat-sensitive virus

C. the immune system of the human body

D. the function of high temperature

64. The blood of the patient___________.

A. is heated with a single injection

B. is heated by being circulated at a higher rate

C. is taken out from the body and then circulated through a heating system.

D .is taken out from the body, heated outside and then put back into the body.

65. The previous attempts to use high temperature for treating AIDS failed because they_________.

A. caused chemical changes B. could not kill HIV effectively

C. resulted in deaths D. killed both HIV and healthy cells

66. According to the passage, the new treatment___________.

A. can kill all the HIV viruses

B. cannot eliminate the viruses completely

C. can double the number of disease-fighting cells

D. can reconstruct the patient’s immune system.

67. The result of the experiment seems to be ___________.

A. disappointing B. incomplete C. successful D. surprising

A 10-year-old boy fatally shot his father Friday, striking him several times as he sat in the front seat of a SUV to pick up the boy from his mother’s home for a weekend visit.

The incident happened about 3:45 p.m. on a cul-de-sac in the 1700 block of Cedar Cove Court, said Sgt. B. E. Williams of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department.

An investigation found that Rick James Lohstroh, 41, was shot by his son, who was sitting in the back seat of the man’s Toyota 4-Runner, said Sgt. B. E. Williams of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department. The shooting took place outside the home of Lohstroh’s ex-wife, where the boy lives with his mother and a 7-year-old brother.

Williams said the gun belonged to the boy’s mother. After firing shots through the back seat, the boy exited the back of the vehicle and continued to fire at the car.

The man died on the way to Memorial Herman Hospital.

Lohstroh was a doctor at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

The man and woman shared custody(监护)of the children.

He was 50 years old when I was born, and a "Mr. Mom" long before anyone had a name for it. I didn't know why he was home instead of Mom, but I was young and the only one of my friends who had their dad around. I considered myself very lucky.

Dad did so many things for me during my grade-school years. He asked the school bus driver to pick me up at my house instead of the usual bus stop that was six blocks away. He always had my lunch ready for me when I came home----usually a peanut butter and sandwich that was shaped for the season. My favorite was at Christmas. The sandwiches would be covered with green sugar and cut in the shape of a tree.

As I got a little older and tried to gain my independence, I wanted to move away from those "childish" signs of his love. But he wasn't going to give up. In high school and no longer able to go home for lunch, I began taking my own. Dad would get up a little earlier and make it for me. I never knew what to expect. The outside of the bag might be covered with his way of a mountain scene (it became his trademark) or a heart with the word "Dad-n-Angle" in its center. Inside there would be a note with that same heart or an “I love you”. Many times he would write a joke or a riddle. He always had some silly saying to make me smile and let me know that he loved me.

I used to hide my lunch so no one would see the bag or read the note, but that didn't last long. One of my friends saw the note one day, grabbed it, and passed it around the lunch room. My face burned. To my astonishment, the next day all my friends were waiting to see the note. From the way they acted, I think they all wished they had someone who showed them that kind of love. I was so proud to have him as my father. Throughout the rest of my high school years, I received those notes, and still have a majority of them.

And still it didn't end. When I left home for college (the last one to leave), I thought the messages would stop. But my friends and I were glad that his action continued.

I began getting letters almost every Friday. The front-desk worker always knew who the letters were from----the return address said, “The Hunk.” Many times the envelopes were addressed in crayon, and along with the enclosed letters were usually drawings of our cat and dog, stick figures of him and mom and if I had been home the weekend before, of me racing around town with friends and using the house as a pit stop. He also had his mountain scene and the hearten-cased inscription (题词),“Dad-n-Angie”.

第四部分 书面表达(共两节,满分35分)

The field of accounting is divided into three broad divisions: public, private, and governmental. A certified public accountant (CPA) must pass a series of examinations, after which he or she receives a certificate. CPAs can offer their services to the public on an individual consultant basis for which they receive a fee. In this respect and many others, they are similar to doctors or lawyers. Like them, CPAs may be self-employed; or they may be employed by an accounting firm.

Many accountants work in government offices or for nonprofit organizations. These two areas are often joined together under the term governmental and institutional accounting. The two are similar because they both have legal restrictions on the way in which they receive and spend funds. Therefore, a legal background is sometimes necessary for this type of accounting practice.

Private accountants handle the financial records of a business. Like those who work for the government or nonprofit organizations, they are salaried rather than paid a fee.

The chief accounting officer of a company is the controller. Controllers are responsible for maintaining the records of the company’s operations. On the basis of the data that have been recorded, they measure the company’s performance; they interpret the results of the operations; and they plan and recommend future action. Indeed, a controller is often just a step away from being the executive officer of a corporation.

Many people have chosen accounting as a profession because of its many advantages. Once on the job, private or governmental, they have security, and they are usually given the chance to move upward in the company — sometimes, to the top. Salaries for people with accounting training are usually good, even on the lower levels, and for those who rise to the top of the profession, salaries are correspondingly high.

范文

 Dear sir,

I’m writing to request a valuable chance to be one of the host families of the British students.

We have a large and clean house, which lies in a beautiful area of the city. I’m good at English and my parents are both professors of English, so I’m sure we won’t have any difficulty communicating with English speakers. My father is an excellent driver and we will be very glad to show foreign students around some nearby places of interest in our own car. Last month we received two American students. We had a great time. Besides, my mother cooks well, so the students will be able to enjoy delicious Chinese food. I would greatly appreciate it if I could have the chance to make friends with them.

Looking forward to your reply.

Yours

Li Hua

录音稿:

(Text 1)

W: Why are you so late? I've been waiting for more than half an hour.

M. My bicycle had a flat tire and I had to walk.

( Text 2)

W. I like swimming but not skating.

M. Skating and tennis are my favorite sports, you know.

( Text 3)

W. My shoe is broken. Can you fix it for me?

M: Sure, miss. I'll do it as soon as possible.

W. But I need it now. I’m in a terrible hurry.

M. All right. I'll do it in just a minute.

( Text 4)

M: I want to change a traveler's check.

W: How much is the check for?

M. 50.

W: How would you like it?

M: Four tens and two fives, please.

( Text 5)

M: Would you like to go dancing with me this evening?

W: I'd love to, but I’m just getting over the flu.

M: Well, why don't we do something else, like going to a movie?

W: Oh, no, thanks, really. I'm still too weak for anything.

( Text 6)

M. My boss is sending me to Brazil on business.

W: When are you leaving?

M. Tomorrow evening on the 9:40 flight.

W. I'll see you off at the airport, if you like.

M. Great! Let's have dinner together today and we can talk over the holiday plan.

W: Good idea. I've been wanting to get a chance to talk to you about it.

M: So have I. See you at the restaurant at 7:00.

W. OK. See you there.

(Text 7)

M: Are you feeling OK, Jane? You look pretty tired.

W: My sister and I had a birthday party for my brother last night. I didn't get much sleep.

M: Where did you have the party?

W. It was at my aunt's house. Then, right after the party, I had to start typing a history paper that was due first thing this morning. I was kind of nervous because the professor said he wouldn't accept any late papers.

M: I don't know how you do it. I can't deal with a situation like that.

W. Well, I just turned the paper in, and now I'm going home to bed. See you later.

( Text 8)

W: Do you ever eat fast food?

M: Yes, yes, I do.

W. What kind of fast food do you normally eat?

M: Oh, er, you know, hamburgers, sandwiches, well, sometimes a pizza.

W: Oh, right. And how often do you eat fast food? Every day, more than once a week or less than once a week?

M. Er, well, Monday to Friday when I'm working, every day, um, but not usually on the weekends.

W. And what time of the day do you eat fast food?

M. Well, at work as I said, you know, at lunchtime. Sometimes, you know if, if I'm going out and I've had no time to cook in the evening then I'll order a pizza.

W. And what do you think of fast food? Which statement do you think is true? Um, either "It's convenient" ?

M: Sure, that's sort of the main reason that I eat it. We're paying for the convenience, you know the speed of it.

W. Right. How about "It tastes good"?

M. Yeah. Urn, I mean, not as good as food like in a good restaurant, but it's not bad.

W. "It's good for you"?

M: No. Sort of eating quickly and standing up, it's sort of bad for you. The food itself isn't very good for you, you know there's not enough greens, um, you know vegetables or salad.

(Text 9)

W. Now, Tony, what do you like best about being a football star?

M. Well, I love to hear the cheering when I’m playing, especially when I score a goal. And, of course, the pay is good.

W. Do you get nervous?

M. Before the game, yes, but not during it.

W. Can you tell us something about your training?

M. Well, we train very hard, especially before a big game. The team has to stay together on the road -- sometimes for weeks -- and I find it very boring.

W: Are you worried about tomorrow's game?

M: No, Even if we lose, we’ll probably still get the cup. You see, we’ve scored more goals than Northern City, so they’ll have to win by at least four goals if they want the cup. I don’t think they can do it.

W: Thank you, Tony, and good luck tomorrow.
