The modern age is an age of electricity.People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there is a power failure, people grope (摸索) about in flickering candlelight, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators.

Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago.Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for million of years.Scientists are discovering more and more that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit humanity.

All living cells send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses of record; they form an electrocardiogram (心电图), which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in an electroencephalogram. The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely small – often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have become so specialized as electrical generators that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cells are linked together, the effects can be astonishing.

The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can send a jolt(摇晃)of as much as eight hundred volts(福特)of electricity through the water in which it lives.(An electric house current is only one hundred twenty volts.) As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel’s body are specialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to length of its body.

59.What might be the best title of the passage?

A.Secrets of electricity B.History of electricity

C.The amazing electric eel D.Modern age of electricity

61.The word of “ eel ”refers to a kind of _____.

    A.electricity B.fish C.mammal D.container

62.What could we conclude from the passage?

    A.All living things generate electricity.

    B.All electricity benefits humanity.

C.All things will spoil without electricity.

D.The age of electricity has been several centuries.

Some people decide to rebuild or redecorate their homes at some point, and sometimes the job takes longer than expected. The Winchester house in San Jose, California was rebuilt over 38 years! One reason that this house took so long to rebuild was that the owner of the house thought that ghosts lived there.

Sarah Winchester was married to Oliver Winchester. After Mr Winchester died in 1886, Mrs Winchester visited a fortune teller in Boston to see what the future held for her.The fortune teller told Mrs Winchester that she would be visited by ghosts because Mr Winchester made money from the sale of Winchester rifles, and all of the people who were killed by those rifles would come to his house for revenge (复仇).The fortune - teller told her that there was only one way she could balance the deaths of those people with the money her husband had made. That was by using the money her husband earned to continuously rebuild the Winchester house.Mrs Winchester followed the fortune teller's advice.

Today, the house has 13 bathrooms, 47 fireplaces, 40 staircases, and three elevators.Guests at the house can took out over the land around the Winchester house from any of the house's 10,000 windows. It is also easy for guests to get lost in the house. There are 20,000 doorways and closets in the Winchester house.Behind many of these doors, guests can find nothing but walls! The purpose of all these changes is to confuse (迷惑) the ghosts who live in the house.

Most people think that the capital of the movie world is Hollywood, in the United States. However, the real movie capital is Mumbai, in India.Mumbai used to be known as Bombay, and so the film industry there is called "Bollywood".Bollywood makes twice as many movies each year as Hollywood--more than 800 films a year.

The movies from Bollywood are very different from Hollywood movies. For one thing, Bollywood movies are much longer than most Hollywood movies. Most Bollywood movies are more than three hours long, and contain singing, dancing, action, adventure, mystery, and romance.Because Bollywood films contain so many different features, this style of film is sometimes called a "masala" film.("Masala" is an Indian word for a mixture of spices.)

Another big difference between Bollywood and Hollywood movies is the way the movies are made.It takes much longer to make a movie in Hollywood than in Bollywood. In fact, filming may begin on a Bollywood movie before the script is even finished. The director and writers can make up the story while the film is being made.Sometimes they will even write the script by hand instead of taking time to type it.

Bollywood actors are very popular and some are in such high demand that they may work on several movies at the same time. They may even shoot scenes for several films on the same day using the same clothes and scenery .Since most Bollywood movies follow the same kind of story, shooting scenes for several films at the same time is not a big problem for actors or directors. This also helps keep the cost of Bollywood movies lower than the cost of Hollywood movies. The average Bollywood film, with a budget (预算) of only two million U.S.dollars, seems very cheap compared to the average budget of sixty million U.S.dollars for a Hollywood film--thirty times as much!

66.The main topic of the passage is______.

A.famous stars in Bollywood B.how Hollywood movies are made

C.the differences between two movie industries

D.the history of movie-making in India

67.What is NOT true about Mumbai?

A.It is the movie capital of India. B.Its new name is Bombay.

C.More movies are made there than in Hollywood.

D.The film industry there is called "Bollywood".

68.Why are Bollywood films often called "masala" films?

A.They have interesting stories.

B.They are much longer than Hollywood films.

C.They show Indian culture.

D.They mix different styles of movies.

69.Bollywood movies are cheap to make because _______ .

A.they are shorter than Hollywood films

B.the scripts are written by hand

C.the movies do not use any special effects

D.most movies reuse things from other movies

70.Which of these statements would the writer probably agree with?

A.Most Bollywood movies are very similar.

B.It takes a lot of money to make a good movie.

C.Only Indian people can understand Bollywood movies.

D.Hollywood movies are too violent.

A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package; what food might it contain? He was astonished to discover that it was a mouse trap!

Retreating (撤退)to the farmyard, the mouse declared the warning, "There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house."

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Mr.Mouse, I can tell you this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence (结果)to me; I cannot be bothered by it."

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, "There is a mouse trap in the house." "I am so sorry, Mr.Mouse," sympathized the pig, "but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; be assured that you are in my prayers."

The mouse turned to the cow, who replied, "Like wow, Mr.Mouse, a mouse trap; am I in grave danger, huh?"

So the mouse returned to the house, head down and depressed to face the farmer's mouse trap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was an evil snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient(成分).His wife's sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.The farmer's wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral the farmer had the cow slaughtered(屠杀)to provide meat for all of them to eat.

D.The farmer’s family were in fact a happy, wealthy and popular family.

74.The soup's main ingredient in Par.7 refers to the _____.

    A.mouse B.pig C.snake D.chicken

Firstly, Spring Festival falls on the first day of Chinese lunar new year, that is, New Year’s Eve while Thanksgiving Day on fourth Thursday of November.

Secondly, Spring Festival focuses on saying goodbye to the old and welcoming the new year, and as a result, “bainian”, and giving or taking “pocket-money” are its typical activities.Thanksgiving Day is to celebrate the harvest extending thanks to the God, through a series of performances and sports games .

Finally, the main course of Spring Festival is having the gathering meal or, eating jiaozi, while that of Thanksgiving Day is eating turkey, pumpkin pie etc.
