I had an interesting experience playing ping-pong last year. I was playing against a  36_opponent . The score was 20 to 17 in her 37 . I won the next three points which made the score 20 to 20. I 38 my paddle on the table and thanked my opponent and began to walk away. She called me 39 and said we had to continue until one of us 40 .

“Look ,” I said , “if we 41  , one of two events will take place. Either you or I will win. If you win, I will begin to 42 my skill. If I win , you will be unhappy. Isn’t it better to know that we both played 43 , that we enjoyed the competition , and that we played to an even score ?” This was a 44 ending for my opponent and for the persons watching this contest. It made 45 to me to leave with a tie game, an impasse (僵局): no winner, no 46 !

So, my friends, here is the problem 47  me. Our present technology makes it possible for nations to 48 other nations with time for retaliatory (报复) strikes. In such a nuclear time there 49 be no winners, only losers. Under these conditions, the only choice to _50 global destruction is global impasse. This would be a 51   “tie game” where no nation wins and no nation loses. An impasse reached through compromise . This is because compromise becomes the only means of 52  . We cannot destroy this beautiful planet by holding on to 53 understanding of victory. The 54 victory is in achieving a desirable impasse. No one wins, 55 no one loses either.

第三部分:阅读理解 A

It doesn’t make any difference how long your speech is. Unless you tune in the first 60 seconds, the chances are they will tune you out.

Take the fellow who opens: “On my way over to the club tonight, I ran into a bum (流浪汉) who asked me for $ 49.50 for a cup of coffee. I told him he’d do much better if he asked for a quarter. He said, “Do you think I’m going into the Ritz in these clothes?” We know his purpose: to win his audience over with humor. His bit of humor, however, has no connection with his speech. He has his audience laughing at the wrong time. Once you have an audience laughing it’s hard to get them to switch to an entirely different train of thought. There is nothing wrong with humor in a speech as long as it has something to do with the purpose of his speech. To open a speech with humor just to be entertaining invites an almost sure “turnoff” for the remainder of the talk.

56. What, in a speech, determines its failure or success?

A. The purpose of the speech. B. A sense of humor. C. The opening remarks. D. A forceful ending.

57. If a speaker decides to be humorous, his humor should ___.

A. be connected with his subject B. make his audience laugh C. be fresh and different D. be reserved for the end

58. The underlined words mean ___.

A. to make your audience go away at once B. likely to cause your audience to lose interest

C. to switch their thoughts to other things D. likely to have your audience laugh with you

59. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?

A. The opening part of your speech should not be long. B. Humor is important in the success of your speech.

C. Your humor should be relevant (相关的) and timely. D. An outstanding speech is full of jokes.

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self – conscious; that is, they are over concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds; what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such comfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person’s self – concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a person themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives. Shy people, who have low self – esteem (自尊), are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need faith that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior (自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one: “You’re just saying that to make me feel good, I know it’s not true.” It is clear that, while self – awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it harmful. Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination. It is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths, for example, not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have to be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to absence of inferiority. Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.

60.The first paragraph is mainly about .

C.the effect of shyness on people D.the questions in the minds of shy people

62.What is the shy people’s reaction to praise?

A.They are pleased by it B.They feel it is not true

C.They are very sensitive to it D.They feel they are worthy of it

63.We can learn from the passage that shyness can .

A.block our chances for a successful life B.help us to live up to our full development

C.enable us to understand ourselves better D.have nothing to do with lack of self – esteem

C

The single, decisive factor(因素) that made it possible for mankind to settle in lasting communities(社区,聚居地) was agriculture. After farming was developed in the Middle East in about 6500 BC, people living in family units did not have to be on the move continually searching for food or hunting their animals. Once people could control the production of food and be assured of a reliable supply of it, their lives changed completely.

Farming was a revolutionary discovery. It not only made settlements possible and later the building of cities but it also made available a reliable food supply. With more food available, more people could be fed. Population therefore increased. The growing number of people available for more kinds of work led to the development of new social formations. With more and more food, a community could support a variety of workers who were not farmers.

Farming in the world over has always relied upon a dependable water supply. For the earliest societies this meant rivers and streams or regular rainfall. The first great civilizations grew up along rivers. Later communities were able to develop by taking advantage of the rainy seasons.

All of the ancient civilizations probably developed in much the same way, in spite of a few differences. As villages grew, the production of more numerous goods became possible. Cloth could be woven from wool. Houses made of wood, brick, and stone could be put up.

The science of mathematics was an early outgrowth of agriculture. People studied the movements of the moon, the sun, and the planets to work out seasons. In so doing they created the first calendars(日历). With a calendar it was possible to find out the arrival of each growing season. Measurement of land areas was necessary if field was to be divided accurately. Measurements of amounts, for example, of seeds or grains was also a factor in farming and housekeeping. Later came measures of value as money exchange became common.

All of the major ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and China appeared in the 4th millennium BC. Historians still argue over which one came into being first. It may well have been the Middle East. This place reaches out from the Nile River in Egypt northward along the coast of former Palestine, then eastward into Asia to include Mesopotamia. In this area people settled along the riverbanks and practiced field agriculture. This kind of farming depended on the reproduction of seed, normally from grain crops.

64. The final result of the development of agriculture was that_________ .

Being assertive is being able to communicate with other people clearly. If you felt that you had expressed what was important to you and allowed the other person to respond in their own way then, regardless of the final outcome, you behaved assertively. It is important to remember that being assertive refers to a way of coping with confrontations ( 对抗)。 It does not mean getting your own way every time or winning some battle of wits against another person. In practice assertive behaviour is usually most likely to produce a result which is generally acceptable to all concerned, without anyone feeling that they have been unfairly treated.

Assertiveness is often wrongly confused with aggression (侵犯行为). An aggressive confrontation is when one or both parties attempt to put forward their feelings and beliefs at the expense of others. In an assertive confrontation, however, each party stands up for their personal rights, but each shows respect and understanding for the other’s viewpoint.

The reason why assertiveness may not come naturally is that we often tend to believe that we must talk around a subject rather than be direct, or that we must offer excuses or justifications for our actions.

In fact we all have a right to use assertive behaviour in a variety of situations. We are often schooled early in life to believe that sometimes our own need to express ourselves must take secondary place. For example, in dealing with those in privileged positions such as specialists, we often feel that speaking assertively is, in some way, "breaking the rules". Everybody has certain basic human rights, but often we feel guilty about exercising them.

69. According to the passage, an assertive person ________.

A. makes other people feel unfairly treated B. puts forward his ideas at the expense of others

C. does not show respect to other people D. speaks out what he wants to say forcefully

70. Which of the following is NOT the reason that many people prefer not to be assertive?

A. They would rather be aggressive than be assertive.

B. It’s often better to give people hints than to be straightforward.

C. Their needs to express themselves take secondary place before important persons.

D. They tend to give excuses and justifications for their actions.

71. In this passage, the author intends to encourage people to _____.

A. fight for their personal rights B. be aggressive when they talk to others

C. assert themselves regardless of whether others suffer or not D. be assertive at any time

Road research experts, puzzled by “motorway madness”, are to make an attempt to discover why drivers continue to take deadly risks in mist and fog. Studies of motorway accidents have given us surprising fact that 98% of drivers ignore all warning of coming danger, particularly fog.

After two years of computerized research into driving and crashes, Dr Peter Lewis, a lecturer at Birmingham University Department of Transportation, says: “the positive fright of a crash appears to be the only thing that will make a driver more careful.”

His findings agree with those of experts in the Department of the Environment, who have persuaded R. John Gilbert, Minister of Transport, to give the right to the latest of a series of projects to stop the killer resulting from many crashed on motorways.

Next month, a 5000-pound American automatic speed-recording machine that photographs vehicle (车辆)exceeding a set speed will be installed on a stretch of the M4 near Reading. The machine, called Orbis takes a photograph of the vehicle and its number plate, and records its speed, the time and the date. It can record up to 900 vehicles an hour in a 24-hour period.

Similar machines are used in Germany and the USA as speed traps, but Dr Gilbert is determined that Orbis will be used only for experiment by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory.

Dr Gilbert said last week, “We shall use the machine to identify drivers who drive fast in fog.” The department will then write to them and invited them to complete a questionnaire and perhaps take part in some physical tests. He added, “One of the most interesting aspects of the research so far is that some motorists can see better than others in fog.”

It is already known that the driver who can see best is not necessarily the fastest, but a well-sighted driver frequently gathers behind him a group of vehicles whose drivers are madly trying to keep his tail lights in view, despite the advice which states, “Don’t hang on to someone else’s tail light. It gives a false sense of security.”

72. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. In spite of all warnings of coming danger, many drivers keep on driving fast in fog.

B. severe punishment and a fine will stop drivers from driving fast in fog.

C. To make a driver more careful in fog a speed limit has to be set.

D. To stop traffic accident, more warnings should be given, especially in bad weather.

73. The machine Orbis can do all of the following except ______.

A. identifying drivers who drive fast in fog B. recording the time and the date

C. recording a vehicle’s speed D. stopping a vehicle from running fast

74. Why do many drivers follow closely the vehicle whose drivers can see better?

A. They are poor sighted and cannot see clearly what lies before them.

B. They think in this way they can avoid being caught when driving fast.

C. They believe by doing so they would feel much safer. D. They think they can avoid a false sense of security.

75. According to the passage, the driver who can see better______.

A. always drives the fastest B. often follows the tail lights of a car before

C. always gives other drivers a false sense of security D. often has many vehicles following him

Now the earth is in bad condition. For example, in some places, the air and water pollution is so serious that it causes many deaths. At the same time, many animals and plants are in danger because of the destruction of their habitats.

Luckily, we human beings have realized the problem. On April 22nd, millions of people across the world do something good for the earth. Some clean up beaches and water, some pick up rubbish, others give speeches to call on more people to take action. But can we save the earth only by one day’s work? The future of our planet depends on our efforts. What we should do is to make every day Earth Day. Only by taking good care of it every day can we hope to live in harmony with nature.
