ShenzhouⅥ carried two astronauts on the mission, lasting 119 hours(Shenzhou Ⅴcarried one astronaut and lasted 21.5hours).

For the very first time, the astronauts were able to perform science experiments in the spacecraft. Astronauts can enter the orbital module(轨道舱) to conduct experiments, instead of being stuck in the reentry capsule(返回舱) as their predecessor,Yang Liwei.

The reentry capsule has returned to the Earth with the astronauts, but the orbital module continues working in space as an independent satellite, which carries out more scientific experiments.

China began its manned space program in 1992, with the first four unmanned test flights in1999, 2001, 2002 and first human spaceflight in 2003. The ShenzhouⅥ mission is the last mission of the first phase(阶段) project, which aims to send humans into space successfully. The second phase goals include space walking and a temporary space lab.

SENTIMENTAL VALUE

One of the most popular programmes on British television , with its regular following of devoted viewers , is the Antiques Roadshow . Members of the public bring their cherished(珍贵的) possessions along to a place in their neighbourhood to be valued by antique(古董) experts . Obviously the experts see a lot of assorted junk , but there are times when even the hardened professionals find it difficult to conceal their excitement on making an unexpected discovery . That brown paper bag that an old lady has brought to the table with something to be valued contains—yes—a rarity , a masterpiece , a good piece of jewellery , …

There was a time when antiques dealers and experts had a reputation for being a little pretentious(自负的) ——knowledgeable , but pretentious . That has changed , due partly to the influence of programmes like the Antiques Roadshow , and the experts now are bent on being as helpful as they can . I remember a conversation just like this in a recent programme.“I suppose you’d like to know what it’s worth,” said the expert , staring at a fine bottle .

“Well , yes”, said the owner , adding as expected , “but naturally I wouldn’t want to sell it . Sentimental value , you know.”

“Yes.” replied the expert . “Anyway , as I said , it is very rare , and it’s worth a mere £500.” And before the gasps of fascinated onlookers had died away , he added quickly , “Of course , if it had been in perfect condition , it would have been worth ten times that——at least ten times.”

Such things make good television , if nothing else .

25. What do all the people bring when they come to the Antiques Roadshow?

 A. Rarities and masterpieces . B. A lot of junk .

 C. Cherished and valuable antiques . D. All kinds of old things .

26. How are antiques experts different now ?

 A. They won’t talk to people much . B. They are very helpful .

 C. They know less than they used to . D. They are more pretentious .

27. “Sentimental value” is a value which _____ .

 A. is purely practical       B. is based on tender feelings alone

 C. an expert gives to an article D. is the true market value

28. The bottle would probably have been worth £5,000 if it _____ .

 A. had not been so untractive

 B. had been signed by the make

 C. had not been damaged somehow

 D. had not carved with a design

Fred Michel is one of 7.2 million Americans who moonlight, or hold more than one job.

Once a week, after his day job as medical director of a mental health center, the 40-year-old psychiatrist(精神病大夫) heads to a part-time job at a treatment center for young people. Twice a month, he travels three hours to another teenage treatment center.

Last year, 5.4 percent of the American workforce held second jobs, according to the US Labor Department, and that looks set to increase this year.

Many workers like the safety that moonlighting provides, says Carl Hausamn, the writer of “Moonlighting: 148 Great Ways to Make Money on the Side.”

The information from the US Labor Department shows that 40 percent of US moonlighters in 1997 took a second job to meet household expenses or pay off debts. Others save money or buy some special things.

People also take second jobs with an eye to the future-wanting to try out a new field or gain experience.

Michel started moonlighting when medical systems were unstable(不稳定的). He wanted to make sure he wasn’t tied to one system that ended up failing.

Just as the purposes for moonlighting vary, the moonlighters cross all age and racial groups. And they work in a variety of industries-no longer just service, office and sale jobs.

“Technology just affects your ability to make money,” Hausman says. “That makes a frequent change in moonlighting.”

As its name means, moonlighting still occurs mostly at night. And that results in some pressures. Chief among them is time.

Full-time employers could misunderstand, too. Some companies do not allow after-hour work because they fear it will affect their employees’ 9-to-5 performance.

“The primary employer is saying, ‘Wait, I’m paying you for the sharp, fresh, energetic you,’” says Tom Gimbel, president and founder of LaSalle Staffing in Chicago. “If you’re burning yourself at both ends, It’s going to show.”

Still, the good done to the moonlighters can be great. Besides extra income, moonlighters enjoy variety , freedom and chance to do something new. They also may find their part-time jobs to strengthen what they do full time.

Besides, “it’s fun,” Michel says. Not only do this part-time jobs offer a chance to network, stretch his professional skills and make more money, but they also give him the variety he wouldn’t find just in a full-time job.

“It’s a way of pulling from the spice cabinet,” he says, “and offering a little variety throughout the day.”

21. What is the article mainly about?

A. The ways of moonlighting.

B. The reasons for moonlighting .

C. The problems with moonlighting.

D. The kinds of people who moonlight.

22. The reason why Fred Michel began to moonlight is that ____.

A. he found it exciting to do a part-time job

B. he needed to make ends meet with more money

C. he feared he would lose his present job one day

D. he felt more and more pressure from his employer

23. Some companies don’t allow their workers to moonlight because they are afraid ___.

A. their workers can not do extra-hour work for them

B. their workers will be too tired to try their best at work

C. their workers will one day turn to some other different jobs

D. their workers will not get to work and be off work on time

24. The underlined sentence “It’s a way of pulling from the spice cabinet.” in the last paragraph means___.

A. moonlighting gets you away from the job you don’t enjoy

B. moonlighting offers you freedom to make extra money

C. moonlighting strengthens your professional skills

D. moonlighting brings you chances to do something different

Sir,

The majority of your readers must have been surprised and shocked to read a letter from Mr R. Hogg, published in last Wednesday’s Herald. Mr. Hogg seems to think that his own convenience and that of motorists in general are the only things that matter in our city.

I would have more sympathy(同情)with Mr Hogg if he just made suggestions to improve the situation. No doubt his problems would be partly solved if the local government built a multi-storey car park in the city center, instead of encouraging motorists to use public transport. All the same, judging from the tone of Mr Hogg’s letter, I suspect that motorists who are so careless of pedestrians’(行人)safety that they would rather park their cars on the pavement than hold up the traffic would probably be too lazy to use a multi-storey car park if they had to walk a few hundred yards to their destination(目的地)afterwards.

My main reason for writing, however, is much more important. Does Mr Hogg realize that, according to figures issued by the Department of Transport, 13,000 people were knocked down in Britain last year because of cars being illegally parked either on the pavement or on crossings? In fact, although the total pedestrian casualty(伤亡事故)rate has fallen over the last ten years, there has been an increase in accidents caused when pedestrians have to step out into the road to avoid parked cars on the pavement and cannot see oncoming traffic.

I cannot share Mr Hogg’s view that the government have paid little attention to “long-suffering motorists”; and I think the punishment for dangerous parking should be made severe enough to stop all motorists from breaking the law in this way.

                           A. WALKER,

                        Proudfoot Lane, Carchester

25.The letter above is written in answer to the letter by      .

    C.some readers D.some motorists

26.The topic for the two letters is      .

A.parking problems in the city center

B.building a multi-storey car park in the city center

C.public transport

D.the increase in accidents caused by parked cars on the pavement

27.What Mr. A. Walker does want to make known in his letter is that .

A.the total pedestrian casualty rate has fallen

B.careless parking may cause serious traffic accidents

C.the convenience of motorists in general matters much

D.the safety of pedestrians matters little

28.In Mr A. Walker’s opinion, serverer punishment should be given to     .

A.all the careless motorists B.all the law breakers

C.all who step out into the road D.all who do dangerous parking

Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero?

Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.

A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.

Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like high-voltage transformers(变压器), heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.

The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant?

Heroes are catalysts(催化剂)for change. They have a vision from the mountain top. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., we might still have segregated(隔离的)buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large-scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain, and the committee meetings endless.

21. Although heroes may come from different cultures, they    .

A.generally process certain inspiring characteristics

B.probably share some weaknesses of ordinary people

C.are often influenced by previous generations

D.all unknowingly attract a large number of fans

22. According to the passage, heroes are compared to high-voltage transformers in that .

A.they have a vision from the mountaintop

B.they have a warm feelings and emotions

C.they can serve as concrete examples of noble principles

It came as something of a surprise when Diana, Princess of Wales, made a trip to Angola in 1997, to support the Red Cross’s campaign for a total ban on all anti-personnel landmines(地雷). Within hours of arriving in Angola, television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines. “I knew the statistics,” she said. “But putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me; like when I met Sandra, a 13-year-old girl who had lost her leg, and people like her.”

The Princess concluded with a simple message: “We must stop landmines”. And she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message.

But, back in London, her views were not shared by some members of the British govemment, which refused to support a ban on these weapons. Angry politicians launched an attack on the Princess in the press. They described her as “very ill-informed” and a “loose cannon(乱放炮的人)。”

The Princess responded by brushing aside the criticisms: “This is a distraction(干扰)we do not need. All I’m trying to do is help.”

Opposition parties, the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the Princess. To make matters worse for the government, it soon emerged that the Princess’s trip had been approved by the Foreign Office, and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in Angola and the British government’s policy regarding landmines. The result was a severe embarrassment for the government.

To try and limit the damage, the Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkidnd, claimed that the Princess’s views on landmines were not very different from government policy, and that it was “working towards” a worldwide ban. The Defense Secretary, Michael Portillo, claimed the matter was “a misinterpretation or misunderstanding. ”

For the Princess, the trip to this war-torn country was an excellent opportunity to use her popularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause. She said that the experience had also given her the chance to get closer to people and their problems.

On average, American kids ages 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet. Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log half that time. All in all, however, children’s leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.

“Children are affected by the same time crisis that affects their parents, ” says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children’s timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless children in both double-income and “male breadwinner” households spent comparable amounts of time interacting (相互影响) with their parents. 19 hours and 22 hours respectively (各自的). In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.)

All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. “play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself, ”says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School. Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.

The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing “free time ” watching television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they’re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren’t replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading. Let’s face it, who’s got the time?

21. By mentioning “the same time crisis” Sandra Hofferth means .

A.children have little time to play with their parents

B.children are not taken good care of by their working parents

C.both parents and children suffer from lack of leisure time

A.are engaged in more and more structured activities

B.are increasingly neglected by their working mothers

C.are spending more and more time watching TV

D.are involved less and less in household work.

24. We can infer from the passage that .

A.extracurricular (课外活动) activities promote children’s intelligence

B.most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched off

C.efforts to get kids interested in reading have been fruitful

D.most parents believe reading to be beneficial to children

It isn’t often that an entire industry is symbolized in the figure of a single human being, and such is the case with Canadian aviation and the aircraft industry. The man is the Hon. John A. D.McCurdy and the life story of this still vigorous (积极的), distinguished Canadian is at once and at the same time the thrilling history of aviation’s progress in Canada.

It all began one cold February day in 1909 at Baddeck, Nova Scotia, when John McCurdy confounded(击败) the critics by flying the Silver Dart, an aircraft designed by himself, for half a mile over the ice of Brasdeor Lakes. This was the first powered flight in Canada and the first by a British subject in the Commonwealth. McCurdy gave proof of his flying ability-and of the development and the use of the aileron by being the first man in the world to carry out a figure eight in the air. He became the first to pilot a flying boat, taking off from Long Island Sound. He flew the first airplane to Mexico. In 1911 he had made the longest flight to date, and that over open sea 90 miles from Key West to Havana. He won the first cross country race in Canada 40 miles from Hamilton to Toronto-and he transmitted the first radio message from aircraft.

When World WarⅡcame, McCurdy took on board supervisory(监督) authority for Canadian aircraft production by serving with the government in various senior positions.

Following World WarⅡ, McCurdy was honored by being made lieutenant governor (政府顾问) of Nova Scotia where he made Canada’s first historic flight. He now lives in Montreal with a summer home in Baddeck, site of his first flight.

“Tear’em apart!” “Kill the fool!” “Murder the referee(裁判)!”

These are common remarks one may hear at various sporting events. At the time they are made, they may seem innocent enough. But let’s not kid ourselves. They have been known to influence behavior in such a way as to lead to real bloodshed. Volumes have been written about the way words affect us. It has been shown that words having certain connotations (含义) may cause us to react in ways quite foreign to what we consider to be our usual humanistic behavior I see the term “opponent” as one of those words. Perhaps the time has come to delete it from sports terms.

The dictionary meaning of the term “opponent ”is “adversary”: “enemy” “one who opposes your interests.” Thus, when a player meets an opponent, he or she may tend to treat that opponent as an enemy. At such times, winning may dominate one’s intellect, and every action, no matter how gross (rude), may be considered justifiable. I recall an incident in a handball game when a referee refused a player’s request for a time out for a glove change because he did not consider them wet enough. The player proceeded to rub his gloves across his wet T-shirt and then exclaimed. “Are they wet enough now?”

In the heat of battle, players have been observed to throw themselves across the court without considering the consequences that such a move might have on anyone in their way. I have also witnessed a player reacting to his opponent’s international and illegal blocking by deliberately hitting him with the ball as hard as he could during the course of play. Off the court, they are good friends. Does that make any sense? It certainly gives proof of a court attitude which departs from (goes against) normal behavior.

Therefore, I believe it is time we elevated (提升) the game to the level where it belongs thereby setting an example to the rest of the sporting world. Replacing the term “opponent” with “associate” could be an ideal way to start.

The dictionary meaning of the term “associate” is “colleague”; “friend”; “companion.” Reflect a moment! You may soon see and possibly feel the difference in your reaction to the term “associate” rather than “opponent.”

29. Which of the following statements best expresses the author’s view?

A.Aggressive behavior in sports can have serious consequences

C.Unpleasant words in sports are often used by foreign athletes

D.Unfair judgments by referees will lead to violence on the sports field

A.are too eager to win

B.are usually short-tempered and sassily offended

C.cannot afford to be polite in fierce competition

A.He refused to continue the game.

B.He angrily hit the referee with a ball

C.He claimed that the referee was unfair.

D.He wet his gloves by rubbing them across his T-shirt

32. The author hopes to have the current situation in sports improved by .

A.calling on players to use clean language on the court

C.changing the attitude of players on the sports field

D.regulating the relationship between players and referees

Soapy’s life was fine during spring , summer and autumn , but not so good in the winter .When November arrived , Soapy always found the way to stay indoors , away from the cold , and had three meals a day without paying one cent . the trick was simple : he broke the law .

Last autumn , when nights got too cold to sleep in the park , Soapy realized it was time to make arrangements for his annual winter trip . He walked over to Fifth Avenue around 10 a.m. one morning and sent a stone crashing through a glass window of a big department store . Then he stood calmly by the window , waiting . As he had expected , a policeman came running around the corner . Soapy confessed immediately that he was the one who had broken the window . Yet the policeman did not believe him . Soapy also failed in his second scheme : the woman he tried to harass (搔扰) verbally was , much to his surprise , overwhelmed (制服) and in fact thanked him for being the first man ever to say such sweet words to her .

It was about noon that Soapy came near a fancy restaurant . He decided to walk in for a big free lunch . when it was time for the bill , he told the manager he had no money and suggested that he have him arrested . The manager , realizing what was going on , asked Soapy to follow him into the kitchen , where a big pile of dirty dishes was waiting to be washed . Three hours later , the exhausted Soapy returned to the street .

Then the night came , and it was too cold for Soapy to sleep in Central Park . So he wandered about until he found himself standing in front of a church . The choir (教会的歌唱队) were practicing a song . “We often sang it in church . I showed great promise once , but look at me now . I’ve got to change . Yes , I’ll take the job offered last week as a truck driver.” At this moment , the policeman appeared again , arresting him on a charge of vandalism (故意破坏罪). Soapy was then taken to the night court , where the judge sentenced him to three months in jail .

C.It’s never too late to change into a better self .

D.We have to get well-prepared for the winters .

22. What happened to Soapy ?

A.He broke a big pile of dishes while he was having lunch .

B.He was put in jail though he had decided to turn over a new leaf .

C.He was slapped on the face for saying inappropriate words to a woman .

D.He sang a song with the choir of the church and was greatly moved .

23. Who does the underlined “he” in Paragraph 3 refer to ?

    A.The policeman . B.Soapy . C.The manager . D.The judge .

24. Which of the statements is true ?

A.Soapy usually spent the cold winter in jail where he could have warmth and free meals .

B.Though Soapy had a job and a home , he enjoyed wandering on the streets , doing nothing .

Nuclear power’s (核能的) danger to health , safety , and even life itself can be described in one word : radiation (辐射)。

Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it , partly because it cannot be detected (探测) by human senses . It can’t be seen or heard , or touched or tasted , even though it may be all around us . There are other things like that . For example , radio waves are all around us but we can’t detct them , sense them , without a radio receiver . Similarly , we can’t sense radioactivity without a radiation detector . But unlike common radio waves , nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things .

At very high levels , radiation can kill an animal or human being outright by killing masses of cells (细胞) in important organs (器官). But even the lowest levels can do serious damage . There is no level of radiation that is completely safe . If the radiation does not hit anything important , the damage may not be significant . This is the case when only a few cells are hit , and if they are killed outright . Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones . But if the few cells are only damaged , and if they reproduce themselves , you may be in trouble . They reproduce themselves in an unusual way . They can grow into cancer . Sometimes this does not show up for many years .

This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation . Serious damage can be done without the knowledge of the person at the time that damage has occurred . A person can be irradiated (放射治疗)and feel fine , then die of cancer five , ten , or twenty years later as a result . Or a child can be born weak or easy to get serious illness as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents .

Radiation can hurt us . We must know the truth .

25. According to the passage , the danger of nuclear power lies in     .

    A.nuclear mystery B.radiation detection

    C.radiation level D.nuclear radiation

26. Radiation can lead to serious results even at the lowest level     .

A.when it kills a few cells

B.if it damages a few cells

C.though the damaged cells can repair themselves

D.unless the damaged cells can reproduce themselves

27. Radiation can hurt us in the way that it can     .

A.kill large numbers of cells in main organs so as to cause death immediately

B.damage cells which may grow into cancer years later

C.affect the healthy growth of our younger generation

D.lead to all of the above results

28. Which of the following can be best inferred from the passage ?

A.The importance of protection from radiation cannot be overemphasized (过分强调).

B.The mystery about radiation remains unsolved .

C.Cancer is mainly caused by radiation .

D.Radiation can hurt those who do not know about its danger .

Grown-ups know that people and objects are solid . At the movies , we know that if we reach out to touch Tom Gruise , all we will feel is air . But does a baby have this understanding ?

To see whether babies know objects are solid , T. Bower designed a method of projecting an optical illusion (视觉影象) of a hanging ball . His plan was to first give babies a real ball , one they could reach out and touch , and then to show them the illusion . If they knew that objects are solid and they reached out for the illusion and found empty air , they could be expected to show surprise in their faces and movements . All the 16 to 24-week-old babies tested were surprised when they reached for the illusion and found that the ball was not there .

Grown-ups also have a sense of object permanence. We know that if we put a box in a room and lock the door , the box will still be there when we come back . But does a baby realize that a ball that rolls under a chair does not disappear and go to never-never land ?

Experiments done by Bower suggest that babies develop a sense of object permanence when they are about 18 weeks old . In his experiments , Bower used a toy train that went behind a screen . When 16-week-old and 22-week-old babies watched the toy train disappear behind the left side of the screen , they looked to the right , expecting it to reappear . If the experimenter took the train off the table and lifted the screen , all the babies seemed surprised not to see the train . This seems to show that all the babies had a sense of object permanence . But the second part of the experiment showed that this was not really the case . The researcher substituted (替换) a ball for the train when it went behind the screen . The 22-week-old babies seemed surprised and looked back to the left side for the train . But the 16-week-old babies did not seem to notice the switch . Thus , the 16-week-old babies seemed to have a sense of “something permanence,” while the 22-week-old babies had a sense of object permanence related to a particular object .

29. The passage is mainly about     .

A.babies’ sense of sight B.effects of experiments on babies

C.babies’ understanding of objects D.different tests on babies’ feelings

30. In Paragraph 3, “object permanence” means that when out of sight , an object     .

A.still exists B.keeps its shape C.still stays solid D.is beyond reach

31. What did Bower use in his experiments ?

    A.A chair . B.A screen . C.A film . D.A box .

32. Which of the following statements is true ?

    A.The babies didn’t have a sense of direction .

B.The older babies preferred toy trains to balls .

C.The younger babies liked looking for missing objects .

D.The babies couldn’t tell a ball from its optical illusion .

Visiting a pub is one of Britain’s oldest forms of entertainment. The idea for the first public houses was brought to Britain thousands of years ago by the conquering Roman army. The first pubs served only wine, but after the discovery of hops (啤酒花) in the fourteenth century, pubs began to serve mainly beer, as they do today.

Today, there are 61,000 pubs in the United Kingdom. One of the oldest, Fighting Cocks in ST. Albans, Herts, is located in a building that dates back to the 11th century. Modern pubs are often owned by English breweries (啤酒厂) and serve only their owner’s products. British pubs are required to have a license, which is difficult to obtain, and operate between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. every day except Sunday, when they must close at 10:30 p.m.

The drinking age in Britain is eighteen, but fourteen-year-olds may enter a pub unaccompanied if they order a meal. Children may enter a pub with their parents until 9 p.m., which lets families enjoy reasonably priced pub meals together and allows pubs to continue in their traditional roles as community centers.

Customs in British pubs differ from those in American bars. In Britain, you must go to the bar to order drinks and food and pay for your purchase immediately, there is no table service. Bartenders are called “landlords” and “barmaids” and they do not expect frequent tipping. To tip a landlord or barmaid, it is customary to tell him to “buy himself one”. He or she may or may not take you tip on your offer. At the end of a visit, a polite customer will return his glass to the bar.

21. Which of the following is not allowed in Britain?

A.    Children under 14 entering a pub with their parents.

D. Young men at or older than 18 drinking beer in a pub.

22. What can we entertain ourselves with at Fighting Cocks today?

A. 100-year-old hops. B. Mainly beer. C. Italian food. D. Just wine.

23. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.

A. British pubs and American bars are completely different

B. services in British pubs are better than those in American bars

C. in American bars you can pay the bill after the meal

D. tip is necessary in both British pubs and American bars

24. This passage is mainly written to ________.

A. give us some information about British pubs

B. compare the British pubs and American bars

C. tell us something about the history of British pubs

D. let us know some rules in British pubs

A landmark agreement on non-stop cross-strait charter flights for the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year holidays will see Taiwan business people working on the mainland and their families fly directly to and from Taipei and Kaohsiung for the first time in over 50 years . However , while the flights will be nonstop , they will still have to go through Hong Kong airspace .

With the agreement , the planes that will carry mainland-based Taiwan business people home and back will start to take off on January 29, with a total of 48 round-trip charter flights continuing through to February 20.

Considered to be a breakthrough in cross-strait relations and a step toward the end of the ban imposed on direct air links in 1949 , when the People’s Republic of China was founded , the agreement signed this year has three advantages over the charter flights for mainland-based Taiwan business people allowed in 2003.

First , it is the first time that two-way and nonstop charter flights are allowed across the Taiwan Strait in 56 years , with six airlines from both Taiwan and the mainland involved . In 2003 , only Taiwan airlines were allowed to be engaged in the charter flights .

Second , it is also the first time that the charter flights will go directly to Taiwan without stopping in Hong Kong . By comparison in 2003, the charter flights were not allowed to fly directly between Taiwan and the mainland . Instead , they had to make stops at a third destination , usually Hong Kong or Macao stretching a one-hour flight to about four hours .

Third , the charter flights this year will connect Taipei and Kaohsiung with Beijing , Shanghai and Guangzhou , among which , Kaohsiung , Beijing and Guangzhou were not on the list of charter flights in 2003.

29. How do the charter flights go ?

A.They fly to Taipei directly without passing Hong Kong airspace .

B.They go through Hong Kong airspace and pass Macao airport .

C.They carry mainland-based Taiwan business people home .

D.They fly over Hong Kong to Taiwan directly without stopping

30. How long do the charter flights last according to the agreement ?

A.Over 3 weeks during the Spring Festival .

    B.A total of 48 days .

C.Beginning from January 15 to Chinese Lunar New Year .

    D.21 days .

31. From this passage we know that the route of the charter flights in 2003 was     .

A.from Guangzhou to Taipei with a stop at Hong Kong airport

B.from Shanghai to Taipei with a stop at Macao or Hong Kong airport

C.from Beijing to Taipei without stopping at Macao or Hong Kong airport

D.from Shanghai to Hong Kong or Macao only , stretching a one-hour flight to about 4 hours.

32. Which is the best title of the article ?

A.Flight Agreement for Chinese Lunar New Year Holidays .

TOKYO — An express train traveling through strong winter winds derailed in northern Japan, killing four people and injuring more than 30, officials said Monday.

Five cars of the six-car express train derailed Sunday evening, three of them topping onto their sides in Yamagata, about 189 miles north of Tokyo. The train was going from northern Akita to Niigate.

The injuries of the survivors did not appear to be life-threatening, Yamagata police spokesman Yoshikatsu Oe said. It was unclear how many passengers were on the train, but Oe said most of the injured were in the first two cars. The dead included two men and two women. One of the men was pulled from the wreckage (残骸) early Monday and was believed to be the last body on the train.

Rescuers planned to lift the wreckage later in the day to see if any other passengers remained beneath.

Transport Ministry official Hiromi Mishima said it was not know what caused the derailment and officials were assessing the extent of the damage. Railway operator JR East Co. President Mutsutake Otsuka apologized for the accident at a news conference Monday morning and promised a thorough investigation. Yamagata police official Yasuhiro Sugiu said there had bee high-speed wind warnings for the area. Public broadcaster NHK (日本广播协会) quoted a train conductor as saying a strong wind hit the train just before the accident. Winds in the area were about 48 mph, Kyodo News agency reported.

Japan in recent days has suffered from unusually heavy snowfall, and storms have led to the deaths of eight people. But snow did not appear to be a factor in Sunday’s crash.

Authorities said they did not know how fast the train was going. Speed was believed to be a factor in an April 25 train wreck that killed 107 people and injured more than 500 others in Amagasaki, western Japan. That accident was Japan’s worst train wreck since 1963.

“I find myself glancing at my watch to see how long I’ve been standing in line,” she said. “Everywhere I go, I notice if the dumpster (垃圾罐) gates are open or if there’s trash in the parking lot.” Ms. Clark is a “mystery shopper”, one of thousands of contract workers that companies hire to pretend as regular customers in order to judge customer service, cleanliness and whether a store is selling a product that meets company specifications (规格).

Mystery shoppers can be found or, rather, not found, everywhere from restaurants and automotive shops to convenience stores and department stores. They play a constant cat-and-mouse game with store and restaurant employees and managers. However it’s not all fun and games. Once in the field, a mystery shopper will typically visit several stores or restaurants per hour, taking mental notes while inside, then jotting down physical notes after they leave.

It’s important for mystery shoppers to be as exact as possible, because the client companies are looking for data they can use to improve their service. The questionnaire won’t say, “Does the trash can need to be emptied?” What an educated shopper will say is, “The trash can to the left of the front door was overflowing with 10 pieces of trash on the ground.” Companies don’t need opinion but facts.

Nowadays mystery shoppers are armed with a number of hi-tech devices, such as a digital scale and a digital thermometer, as well as a handheld PC for recording the entire experience. It’s a challenging job but a rewarding one. Mystery shoppers can be full time or part time, but the full-time workers tend to stick to standard mystery shopping while part-timers often choose the less complex reward-based programs. In those, the shoppers stay disguised (装扮的) only until the “shop” is finished, and then reveal (透露) themselves to the store management and award prizes to employees who provided excellent service.

To be a mystery shopper, it’s import to be a good observer, but sometimes it’s important to have the right profile (外表), too. Companies often hire shoppers from particular backgrounds to better blend in with clients’ regular customers. If a secret shopper will be sent in, for example, to do a high-end automotive shop, the candidate must have a particular profile that meets a high-end, luxury car-type buyer profile. “It’s a challenge to perform your shop without being discovered,” Ms. Clark said, “because most of the people that we work for are very aware of the mystery shopping program.”

25. According to the text a “mystery shopper” would not have to ________.

A. sign a contract with the employer B. travel a lot around the city

C. provide exact facts to the company D. fill in questionnaires

26. We learn from the text that Ms. Clark ________.

A. visits some shops regularly and sometimes does something special

B. pretends to be a shopper and evaluates the services

C. is a government official looking into the services

D. is a manager of a company offering good services

27. People are willing to become a mystery shopper mainly because they can ________.

A. get the best service and get paid at the same time

B. play a cat-and-mouse game with shop0 employees and managers

C. do the job either full time or par time and get paid well

D. observe clearly what happens in the shops

28. What does the underlined word “those” in the 4th paragraph refer to?

A. The shops where the mystery shoppers to. B. The less complex reward-based programs.

C. Par-time jobs. D. Excellent services.

In a moment of personal crisis (危机), how much help can you expect from a New York taxi driver? I began studying this question and found the answers interesting.

One morning I got into three different taxis and announced: “Well, it’s my first day back in New York in seven years. I’ve been in prison.” Not a single driver replied, so I tried again, “Yeah, I shot a man in Reno,” I explained, hoping the driver would ask me why, so I could say casually, “Just to watch him die.” But nobody asked. The only response came from a Ghanaian driver: “Reno? That is in Nevada?”

Taxi drivers were uniformly sympathetic (有同情心的) when I said I’d just been fired. “This is America,” a Haitian driver said. “One door is closed. Another is open.” He argued against my plan to burn down my boss’s house: “If you do something silly and they put you away, you cannot look for another job.” A Pakistani driver even turned down a chance to profit (获益) from my loss of hope: He refused to take me to the middle of the George Washington Bridge, a $ 20 trip. “Why you want to go there? Go home and relax. Don’t worry. Take a new job.”

One weekday in July, while wearing a red ski mask (面具) and holding a stuffed (塞满的) pillowcase with the word “BANK” on it, I tried hailing (招呼) a taxi five times outside different banks. The driver picked me up every time. My ride with Guy-Caaude Thevenain, a Haitian driver, was typical of the superb assistance I received.

“Is anyone following us?”

“No,” said the driver, looking in his rearview mirror at traffic and me.

“Let’s go across the park,” I said. “I just robbed the bank there. I got $ 25,000.”

“$25,000?” he asked.

“Yeah, you think it was wrong to take it?”

“No, man. I work 8 hours and I earn just $ 70. If I can do that, I do it too.”

As we approached 86th and Lexington, I pointed to the Chemical Bank.

“Hey, there’s another bank,” I said, “Could you wait here a minute while I go inside?”

“No, I can’t wait. Pay me now.” His reluctance may have something to do with money — taxi drivers think the rate for waiting time is too low — but I think he wanted me to learn that even a bank robber can’t expect unconditional support.

29. From the Ghanaian driver’s response, we can infer that ________.

A. he was not caring about the killing B. he was frightened to hear what the writer said

C. he thought the writer was a criminal D. he thought the writer was crazy

30. Why did the Pakistani driver refuse to give the writer a ride?

A. He didn’t want to help the writer get over his career crisis.

B. He was in a hurry to go home and relax.

C. The place was far away. D. He thought the writer was going to kill himself.

31. The underlined word “reluctance” in the last paragraph most probably means ________.

A. anger B. unwillingness C. opportunity D. eagerness

32. What does the message mainly discuss?

A. Honesty of taxi drivers in New York. B. Taxi riders’ awareness of possible dangers.

C. Problem of taxi drivers’ attitudes towards riders.

D. Importance of the education of taxi drivers.

A new period is coming. Call it what you will: the service industry, the information age, the knowledge society. It all translates to a great change in the way we work. Already we’re partly there, the percentage of people who earn their living by making things has fallen sharply in the Western World. Today the majority of jobs in America, Europe and Japan (two thirds or more are in many of these countries) are in the service industry, and the number is on the rise. More women are in the work force than ever before. There are more part-time jobs. More people are self-employed. But the breath of the great change can’t be measured by numbers alone, because it also is giving rise to new way of thinking about the nature of work itself. Long-held opinions about jobs and careers, the skills needed to succeed, even the relation between workers and employers-all these are being doubted.

We have only to look behind us to get some sense of what may lie ahead. No one looking ahead 20 years possibly could have seen the ways in which a single invention, the chip, would change our world thanks to its uses in personal computers, and factory equipment. Tomorrow’s achievements in biotechnology or even some still unimagined technology could produce a similar wave of great changes. But one thing is certain: information and knowledge will become even more important, and the people who own it, whether they work in factories or services, will have the advantage and produce the wealth. Computer knowledge will become as basic a requirement as the ability to read and write. The ability to deal with problems by making use of information instead of performing regular tasks will be valued above all else. If you look ahead 10 years, information service will be leading the way. It will be the way you do your job.

21.Information age means _____________.

A.the service industry is depending more and more on women workers

B.heavy industries are rapidly increasing

C.people find it harder and harder to earn a living by working in factories

D.most of the job chances can now be found in the service industry.

A.the difference between the workers and employers has become smaller

B.people’s old ideas about work no longer exist

C.most people have to take part-time jobs

D.people have to change their jobs from time to time

23.What does the author mean by referring to computers and other inventions?

A.People should be able to act quickly to the advancement of technology.

B.Future achievements in technology will bring about big changes.

C.The importance of high technology has been paid no attention to.

D.Computer science will play a leading role in the future information services.

24.The future will probably belong to those who _________.

A.own and know how to make use of information

B.can read and write well

C.devote themselves to service industries

D.look ahead instead of looking back

B

Many young people tell me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people ,but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”

The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year job in the U. S. Coast Guard to become a writer, I had no hopes at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering, what if? I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadow land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

25.The passage is meant to _________.

A. warn young people of the hardship that a successful writer has to experience

B. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer

B. A writer’s success depends on luck rather than an effort.

C. Famous writers usually live in poverty.

D. The chances for a writer to become successful are small

27.Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing work?

A. He wasn’t able to produce a single book.

B. He hadn’t seen a change for the better.

C. He wasn’t able to have a rest for a whole year.

D. He found his dream would never come true.

28.“Shadow land” in the last sentence refers to __________.

A. the wonderland one often dreams about

B. the bright future that one is looking forward to

C. a world that exists only in one’s imagination

D. the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reached

C

A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: life isn’t fair. It’s a disappointment, but it’s absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It’s not and it won’t be.

One of the nice things about surrendering (屈从) to the fact that life isn’t fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. We know it’s not “life’s job” to make everything perfect, it’s our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt is different hand; everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.

The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that life isn’t fair. We tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a self-defeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel compassion (热情) for others and for ourselves. And compassion is a heartfelt emotion that delivers loving-kindness to everyone it touches. The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you out of self-pity and into helpful action.

29. The writer thought of his friend’s question as a good one because ________.

A. he also wanted to know who held such an opinion

B. it made him recall something during his childhood

C. like his friend, he also thought life was unfair

D. he learned something from the question as a youngster

30. Surrendering to the fact that life isn’t fair will ________.

A. keep us from making everything perfect

B. keep us from doing everything in our power

C. make us face unfair treatment bravely

D. make us know it’s our duty to perfect things

31. The second paragraph of the passage mainly tells us that ________.

A. it’s nice to accept the injustice of life B. it’s nice to surrender to the life

C. we should not surrender to the life D. we should not feel sorry for everything

32. In the last paragraph, “this very basic fact” refers to the fact that ________.

A. you should not pity for others B. life isn’t and won’t be fair

C. compassion is heartfelt emotion D. pity is a self-defeating emotion

Somehow Rey had managed to struggle free from the rope around his neck, after being left to die a slow death as punishment for being a bad Spanish greyhound.

It is believed that 50,000 greyhounds are killed by their owners in Spain each year after they grow too old, or turn out to be too slow to hunt with.

Dogs have also been found thrown into wells, burnt alive and even injected with poison.

But Rey's intended fate was, even within the levels of cruelty usually shown to Spanish hunting dogs, especially cruel. The rope around his neck had been set at a height so that his front paws could not touch the ground, meaning that he was intended to stand on his back legs until he was too tired to support himself. When his legs finally became too tired to move, the rope should have done its work.

“They call it the typewriting death, because the dog's back legs struggled against the ground and make the clicking sound of a typewriter,” said Albert Sorde, of the SOS Galgos greyhound rescue group. “It is a punishment they save for greyhounds that are thought to have made their owners lose face.”

“Rey's throat was severely damaged but we managed to find a vet to operate and, though it was expensive, he survived,” he said.

Greyhounds in Spain are used for hunting hares (野兔). “The dogs are meant to imitate the swerves (转向) of the hares,” said Sorde. “Those who don't, and make their owners look bad, are called "dirty greyhounds" and are most likely to be killed by the typewriter method.”

21. _______ is one of the methods used to kill dogs.

A. Kicking B. Burying C. Shooting D. Drowning

22. The underlined word “vet” in Paragraph 6 means “_____”.

A. equipment B. ambulance C. animal medicine D. animal doctor

23. What can you infer from the passage?

A. The typewriting death is the cruelest of all as it is a slow death.

B. Rey is one of the fifty thousand greyhounds killed so far in Spain.

C. Rey was punished because he had not been loyal to his owner.

D. It is the Spanish hunters not greyhounds that should be punished.

24. The passage mainly tells the readers about ________.

A. the typewriting death of dogs

B. the cruel killing of dogs in Spain

C. how Spanish dogs hunt hares

D. how Rey was saved by rescuers

It’s difficult to get the young to listen to anything you say these days. They have shut themselves off from the world with earplugs attached to their personal stereos such as MP3 players. And with more than three million iPods and MP3 players sold in Britain every year, it’s not just the young who have been in the personal stereo habit. But at what risk to our hearing?

When MP3 players and iPods are turned to full volume, the sound can reach 104 dB (分贝), the maximum allowed by EU safety standards but almost as loud as a pneumatic drill (气钻) (110dB).

The advice from scientists is to turn down the volume and limit use of such machines to an hour a day; the producers also recommend taking regular breaks to give the ears a rest. Yet research by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) showed that 39 per cent of the young don’t practise safe listening. The worry is that they could be creating problems later in life.

People with good hearing have tiny hair cells that line the inner ear and transmit signals to the brain, which it interprets as sound. When repeatedly exposed to uncomfortably loud noises (loud is defined as above 80dB), including music through headphones and at concerts, those hair cells require a rush of blood or oxygen, otherwise “they effectively die”. Temporary hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is a sign that hair cells are trying to recover, but over time recovery becomes impossible.

At UK cinemas, sound levels of 110dB have been recorded. Music played in nightclubs is so loud as to be comparable, in some cases, to standing two feet away from an aeroplane as it takes off (110dB). The level at which pain starts to happen for sound is 140dB.

25. When you use MP3 player, you should do the following except ________.

A. turn it to full volume B. take regular breaks

C. use it less than an hour a day D. turn down the volume

26. Which of the following is true?

A. MP3 and iPods players are always harmful to hearing.

B. 3 million young people use MP3 players in Britain.

C. Most young British people are suffering hearing loss.

D. Over half of the British young people practise safe listening.

27. The highest safe sound shouldn’t be louder than_________.

A. 80dB B. 140dB C. 104dB D. 110dB

28. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. A warning that falls on deaf ears B. MP3 players—hearing killers

C. The causes of hearing loss D. Hair cells suffering from loud noises

NEW YORK - Gordon Parks, who captured

the struggles and triumphs of black America as a

photographer for Life and then became Hollywood’s

first major black director with “The Learning Tree”

and the hit “Shaft,” died Tuesday, his family said.

He was 93.

“Nothing came easy,” Parks wrote in his autobiography

(自传). “I was just born with a need to explore every

tool shop of my mind, and with long searching and

hard work. I became devoted to my restlessness.”

He covered everything from fashion to politics to sports during his 20 years at Life, from 1948 to 1968.

But as a photographer, he was perhaps best known for his gritty photo essays on the grinding effects of poverty in the United States and abroad and on the spirit of the civil rights movement.

Parks was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Fort Scott, the youngest of 15 children. In his 1990 autobiography, “Voices in the Mirror,” he remembered it as a world of racism and poverty, but also a world where his parents gave their children love, discipline and religious faith.

He went through a series of jobs as a teen and young man, including piano player and railroad dining car waiter. The breakthrough came when he was about 25, when he bought a used camera in a pawn shop for $7.50. He became a freelance fashion photographer. A year later he went to Vogue magazine and then to Life in 1948.

“Reflecting now, I realize that, even within the limits of my childhood vision, I was on a search for pride, meanwhile taking measurable glimpses of how certain blacks, who were fed up with racism, rebelled against it,” he wrote.

When he accepted an award from Wichita State University in May 1991, he said it was “another step forward in my making peace with Kansas and Kansas making peace with me.”

29. How many jobs did Parks go through in his life?

A. 2. B. 3 C. 4. D. 5.

Australian flag designs by readers of The Sun-Herald

We received dozens of responses after inviting readers to send in their designs for a new flag. The designs we received include:

James Anthony, Drummoyne

James reduces the Union Jack down in size and changes its shape to become a reminder of the British tradition rather than deleting it altogether. At the same time he suggests enlarging the stars of the Southern Cross. His design attempts to use the best of both worlds in a newly designed flag.

As he says, "the British part of the Australian Flag is too big and the Australian bits are too small. When you make the stars bigger the Australian flag can look impressive".

Joe Bollen, Turramurra

Joe’s flag has the main elements of a risen sun, white horizon (地平线), red earth at the base and the Southern Cross. He intends to make the risen sun a special Australian symbol on the flag. He believes it represents life. The Southern Cross shows that we live in the Southern Hemisphere.

Maria Ieraci, Sydney

Maria deleted the Union Jack but otherwise kept the flag as is with the Southern Cross and Federation Star. She says, "There is only one correct way to change the Australian flag" and that is "to drop the Union Jack—when Australia becomes a Republic", which she hopes will be before 2010.

Ron Bennett, Sydney

Ron recommends using the Aboriginal colours but replacing their image of the sun with the map of Australia. He says, "Australia is unique being an island continent with an instantly recognisable outline at that" and "this will leave no doubt as to which country the flag belongs".

In Western Europe homelessness has quietly been climbing to levels not seen since the end of World War II. According to the European Federation of National Organizations Working with the Homeless (FEANTSA), at least 3 million Western Europeans are homeless this winter — and between one-fifth and one-third of them are members of homeless families. Think homelessness is an American problem? Think again. As a percentage of population, it's as bad in Europe as it is in the U. S., where there are an estimated (估计) 2 million homeless.

One of the fastest-growing parts of Europe's homeless population is families. After all, Europe sees itself as kinder, gentler and more socially responsible than the U.S., with an extensive, expensive social safety net that's designed to protect the most helpless sections of the populace (平民). But that might just be the point: it's easier to be homeless in Europe, where even the down-and-out get social-welfare checks.

What's even more scary is that 3 million is almost certainly an underestimate: most European countries simply don't know where to look or how to count the homeless. Government data are confusing and unreliable. Austria and Spain have no official statistics at all. Germany, France, Italy and the U.K. have what are best described as estimates, many of them regarded by organizations that work with the homeless. INSEE, France's national statistics agency, admits that its official count of 86,500 is only based on the number of adults that went at least once to a soup kitchen or an accommodation service. FEANTSA estimates that the real number of French homeless is closer to 200,000, but many aid organizations claim that even this figure is too low. The British government claims there are just 596 rough sleepers across the country, but those who work in London's shelters say there are more than 1,000 in the capital alone.

29. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. There are about 3 million homeless families in Western Europe at present.

B. Homelessness percentage in Western Europe is larger than that in the USA.

C. Western Europe homelessness has got to the highest point in the past 60 years.

  D. Homelessness is no longer an American problem but a Western European one.

30. What can be the cause of more and more European families becoming homeless?

A. Europe has become much poorer than the US.

B. Europe shows too much pity on poor people.

C. Europe has a larger population than the US .

D. Europe is too proud of its social safety net.

31. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.

A. it’s easy to find out how many people are homeless in western countries

B. there are no homelessness problems in countries like Austria and Spain

C. there are more homeless people in France than in other European countries

D. not all the data that are collected by the European governments are reliable

32. How does the author feel about the situation in Europe?

A. Interested. B. Cheerful. C. Easy. D. Worried.

If you have been joining in chat room conversations, or trading email with web pals, you have become one of the millions who write in a strange short form of English.

And you've got a sense of humor about short forms like SOHF (= sense of humor failure) to describe Internet newcomers who don't understand you.

Across the globe, every night teenagers and their elders are “talking” online, many of them all talking at the same time.

It's fast: try talking to six people at once. It's brief: three or four words per exchange. It takes wit, concentration, and quick fingers. And it requires linguistic economy ( 语言省略 ). There's neither time nor space for explanations.

Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI ( = pardon me for jumping in).

Interested in whom you are talking to? Type A/S/L, the nearly universal request to know your pal's age, sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a response from your pal.

If something makes you laugh, say you are OTF ( = on the floor), or LOL (= laughing out loud), or combing the two into ROTFL ( = rolling on the floor laughing) .

And when it is time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG ( = got to go) or TTYL ( = talk to you later).

People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing emotion, as it takes more time to hold down the “shift” key and capitals. Punctuation (标点) is going, too.

23. If you get 17/F/NY as an answer to your A/S/L, it means______.

 A. the person on the other end is 17 from New York and he is fine

 B. you are talking to a girl who is 17 and lives in New York

 C. you are talking to 17 girls who are from New York

 D. the person who you are talking to is a 17 - foot tall New York girl

LONDON ( Reuters)-- Ecotourism is causing a lot of damage to wildlife and may be endangering the survival of the very animals many people go to see, according to researchers.

Biologists and conservationists (自然环境保护论者) are worried because polar bears, dolphins, penguins and other creatures are getting stressed and losing weight and some are dying.

“Evidence is growing that many animals do not react well to tourists in their backyard,” New Scientist magazine said.

The immediate effects researchers have noticed are changes in behavior, heart rates, or stress hormone(荷尔蒙) levels but they fear it could get much worse and over the long term “could endanger the survival of the very wildlife they want to see”.

Although money produced through ecotourism, which has been growing at about 10 --- 30 percent a year, has major benefits for poor countries and people living in rural areas, the Swiss-based World Conservation Union and some governments fear not all projects are audited (审计) and based on environmentally friendly policies, according to the magazine,

“The transmission of disease to wildlife, or small changes to wildlife health through disturbance of daily life or increased stress levels, while not obvious to the casual observer, may translate to lower survival and breeding,” said Philip Seddon, of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Scientists have noticed that bottleneck dolphins along the northeastern coast of New Zealand become nervously excited when tourist boats arrive. Similar changes in behavior have been observed in polar bears and yellow-eyed penguins in areas visited by ecotourists are producing smaller babies.

Conservationists are now calling for more research into the effect of ecotourism on animals and say the industry must be developed carefully. They also want studies done before new ecotourism projects are started.

“The animals’ welfare should be very important because without them there will be no ecotourism,” said Rochelle Constantine of the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

25. What's the text mainly about?

    A. Many animals are dying because of lack of money.

  B. There will be no ecotourism without animals.

  C. Ecotourism could endanger the survival of the wildlife.

  D. More research should be done on ecotourism.

26. We may learn from the text that ________.

  A. ecotourism must be developed properly

  B. polar bears are losing weight without enough food

  C. all the poor countries have stopped ecotourism

  D. money produced through ecotourism should be spent on wildlife

27. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?

  A. Many animals get on well with the tourists.

  B. Polar bears in areas visited by ecotourists are producing smaller babies.

  C. People living in rural areas hasn’t taken advantage of ecotourism.

  D. Studies should be done before new ecotourism projects are started.

28. What Rochelle Constantine said in the last paragraph implies that ______.

  A. if people want to get high income, they must develop ecotourism

  B. animals have rights to live their own life

  C. animals are people’s good friends

  D. people should take good care of wildlife

I strongly believe that these types of drugs should only be allowed under medical advice,” concluded Dr. Maamoun .

Our town is in the eastern part of our country. Once a year, we elect a girl to show how beautiful and great our town is .All the girls are eager to get this position in an effort to become popular.

It was not an easy choice this year, since there were eight girls to choose from .The elder judge finally decided that either Sara or May would get the position .Both girls were beautiful with extraordinary appearance .Besides ,they had a good education and cared about how pollution had a bad effect on the earth .Most important ,both girls got up early to eat eggs at their breakfast .Eggs were important to people of the east because our economy depended mainly on the production of eggs.

“Either girl will win,” my father said. “But someone will cry in the end.”

“Either will be fine,” I said. “They are both great girls.”

The final round was held at the east edge of our town .Sara lived nearby so she did not need to get up early to arrive .However, she was the first person there. “You know what they say about the early bird,” she said with a smile.

However, May arrived fifteen minutes late to the competition. “It’s the taxi driver’s fault,” she said. “I told him to head east ,but he was in one ear and thought I said Bread Cheese .” You know, Bread Cheese was the name of our neighboring town.

I thought May would certainly lose because she was late, but to my surprise, she turned out to be this year’s winner .The judges liked her answer to their last question, “If you could have anything in the world, what would it be ?” Sara had replied, “World peace.” May, on the other hand, said, “Better market to have our eggs sell well.”

Brazil and Barcelona forward Ronaldinho has been named the 50th European Footballer of Year at a great party in Paris held towards the end of 2005.

“To be here with all those great players is a dream .This gives me huge encouragement to keep working and try to do well. I have the chance to do for a living what I like most in my life, and that’s playing football. I can make people happy and enjoy myself at the same time,” said Ronaldinho after receiving the golden cup at the party.

There was no way Ronaldinho could not succeed ,as he was always full of uncontrollable desire for football. He would play on the dirt ,in the wood ,even in his living—room—nothing else stayed in his mind. He began to shine on the international games when he was 17 ,helping Brazil win the Under—17 World Championship(锦标赛).He was on his way to becoming one of the world’s greatest players, with his role in Brazil’s World Cup victory in 2002. With 22 goals in his first year in Barcelona ,he received football’s most valuable honor in 2004 : the FIFA World Player of the Year.

“He isn’t only able to win games on his own ,he keeps our spirits high because he is always in a good state of feelings,” says his captain. “You can challenge him ,push him ,trip him and even prevent him on purpose—nothing can stop him .And it shows in his games .He’s not satisfied with moving the ball from one point to another; he has to dance it away. Some houses are designed to be smart .Others have smart designs .An example of the second type of house won a Prize of Excellence from the American Club of Architects(建筑师).

On the shore of Sullivan’s Island off the coast of South Carolina ,the prize—winning beach house was built to replace one destroyed to pieces by Hurricane Hugo 10 years ago. In September 1989 ,Hugo struck South Carolina ,killing 18 people and damaging or pulling down 36,000 homes in the state.

Before Hugo ,many new house built along the shore were poorly constructed ,and the instructions for building were not strict ,according to architect Ray Huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. All new houses are required to follow stricter instructions after the terrible experience in Hugo. The new houses on the island should be able to stand a terrible hurricane with the strongest wind of 179 to 209 kilometers per hour.

At first sight ,the house on the island looks anything but hurricane-proof. Its redwood roof makes it look like “a large bright ball” at night ,according to one observer .But looks can be not true .The wooden formation of the house is supported with long steel sticks to give it huge strength .To further protect the house from hurricane damage ,Huff raised it 2.7 meters off the ground on wood pilings ,part of which were buried in the sand. In fact ,they are strong enough to bear the weight of the house .They also lift the house above the sea water brought by the hurricane . The pilings allow the sea water to run under the house instead of running into it . “These waves of water come ashore at great speed and cause most of the damage done to the beach-front buildings,” said Huff.

A.put stronger pilings in the sand B.break huge sea waves into small ones

C.stand the strong wind of about 200 km/hr

D.prevent water from rushing into the house

32.According to the passage ,which statement CANNOT be true?

A.The report above was written in 1999 ,ten years after Hugo.

B.The house designed by Ray Huff lay on the coast of South Carolina.

C.When a hurricane strikes ,waves of water come ashore at a great speed.

D.The formation of the new house can make it stand a terrible hurricane.

On Saturday, February 12, 2000, two things happened that changed everything in my life. The first was that on this day my baby sister was married. She was twenty-six this day, and yet to me she was still my baby sister.

I was happy that day, and also sad. Gone were the days of me bossing her around and telling her what she should do with her life. My bossy behavior had earned me the nickname Lucy. If you are a Peanuts fan, then you can clearly imagine my behavior as an older sister. To me it wasn't an insult(侮辱); I rather like the nickname Lucy. I happen to think that Lucy is strong and has incredible self-confidence, although she is a little overbearing at times. I did my best to live up to the standards set forth by this dynamic cartoon character.

I left the reception to get some air because suddenly I was overcome with grief at the realization that I was no longer a child. I'm not sure how long I sat there before my sister came and joined me. We talked about how we are grown up now and shed a few tears for our childhood days gone by. As she wiped a tear from my eye she lovingly said, "you'll always be Lucy to me." We hugged.

My cousin Mike walked over and told my sister that it was time to cut the cake. And then he dropped bomb number two on me. "Hey, did you guys hear that Charles Schultz died today?" He said it like it was no big deal.

Dead? How could Charles Schultz be dead? He was my creator! And though I have never met the man personally, he has always been like an invisible father to me. He did, after all, fashion a famous character after me. I lost so many things on this day. Innocence slipped away from me like a thief in the night: come and gone before I could do anything about it, taking with it all the treasures that I held most valuable in my heart. I felt myself grow up, all in one moment.

Reality rushed in around me like a hurricane tide. There was nowhere to run to. All I could do was sit there and watch it destroy and reshape what had existed only a moment before. I was no longer a child. I was no longer Lucy who knew what was best for everyone else. I allowed the tide to carry my sadness out with it. Take it out to sea, for it serves no purpose in my life. I stood up from the bench; a little taller than I was when I sat down. I turned and headed back to the hall, hoping I didn't miss the cutting of the cake. It was the day my sister grew wings of her own and left the nest. It was the day that Lucy died, and I was born.

21. The two things that changed the writer’s life are ________.

B. her being given the nickname Lucy and her best friend’s death

23. From the last paragraph we can come to a conclusion that ______.

A. The writer was completely disappointed at her loss of so much

B. The writer regretted very much that she was getting old so fast

C. The writer realized how important she was to her sister

D. The writer felt it no use just regretting for the past

24. The underlined word “boss” in the passage most probably means ______.

A. own B. protect C. give orders D. make happy

Dirty plastic bags are being transformed into best-loved fashion accessories(装饰物) and handy household goods under a bold recycling project in the Indian capital. Aside from expensive women’s handbags, the project, being driven by the Conserve nongovernmental environmental group, is producing in large amounts file folders, shoe-racks, storage boxes, table mats and coasters. “It’s effective waste management while providing a section of the urban poor with a means of livelihood,” said Anita Ahuja, one of the brains(智囊) behind Conserve. Launched in 1988, the NGO focused on projects such as recycling household waste into compost(肥料) before moving into recycling plastics about two years ago. The recycling process begins with rag pickers, who collect plastic bags from the 600 tons of waste produced by Delhi’s 14 million population. “of this 20 to 25 percent waste is plastic,” said Ahuja’s husband Shalabh, her partner at Conserve. When enough bags have been collected, they have to be cleaned. The bags are then sorted according to their colors, prints and thicknesses. The next step is feeding them into a machine which melts them into colorful plastic sheets of varying thicknesses. The sheets are made into various products, the most popular of which are file covers. The products are mostly designed by foreign volunteers, led by Russian freelance designer Ekaterina Lopoukhina. One of the employees said she was happy with her work. Besides being a source of income, she said her work was slowly creating awareness about pollution caused by plastics in her neighbourhood.

One answer to the question of land shortage was suggested by an organization some years ago. A city was to be built at sea, housing 30,000 people.

The suggestion was to shape the city like a harbor(港口).The outer wall of the harbor would stand on steel columns resting on the sea-bed. Naturally this could only be where the water was fairly shallow. The people would like to live in flats in the fifty-metre high outer wall. The flats would be all face inwards, and would be made of concrete(混泥土) and glass. The glass would be specially made and colored to control the heat and strong light from the sun. The planners called this man-made harbor would be calm. On it would be floating islands carrying more building: a hospital, two theaters, museum, an art exhibition hall and a church. On one of the islands would be a special factory to take the salt out of sea water and turn it into fresh water.

People living in the city could move around on small boats driven by electricity, so there would be no air pollution from the burning of gas. There would be platforms outside the man wall for ships bringing supplies. People could also travel to the mainland by motorboat or water plane.

21. What was suggested about the construction of a new city at sea?

A. The city was to be designed together with a harbor.

B. The walls around the city would be made of steel and glass.

C. The building of the city would rest on a floating island.

D. The people would live in tall building surrounded by a wall.

22. How would fresh water be supplied to the city?

A. By treating sea water.

B. By getting it from the surrounding islands.

C. By building a small lake of fresh water inside the city.

D. By transporting it from the mainland.

23. The suggestion made by the organization is to solve the problem that _______.

A. there is not enough space for building cities on land

B. land transportation has became increasingly difficult

C. there are too many people on land

D. present cities are heavily polluted by cars

24. The purpose of the writer is _______.

A. to suggest how new type of harbor could be built at sea

B. to give a description of a new-type city

C. to draw people's attention to the problem of air pollution

D. to introduce a new way of building harbor-cities

More than 6000 children were expelled(开除) from US school last year for bringing guns and bombs to school, the US Department of Education said on May 8.

The department gave a report to the expulsions(开除) as saying handguns accounted for 58 percent of the 6093 expulsions in 1996---97, against 7 percent for rifles(步枪) or shotguns and 35 percent for other types of firearms.

“The report is a clear sign that our nation's public schools are cracking down(严惩) on students who bring guns to school,” Education Secretary Richard Riley said in a statement. “We need to be tough-minded about keeping guns out of our schools and do everything to keep our children safe.”

In March1997, an 11 years old boy and 13 years old boy using handguns and rifles shot dead four children and a teacher at a school in Jonesboro, Arkansas. In October, two were killed and seven wounded in a shooting at a Mississippi school. Two months later, a 14-year-old boy killed three high school students and wounded five in Dasucah, Kentucky.

Most of the expulsions, 56 percent, were from high school, which have students from about age 13. 34 percent were from junior high schools and 9 percent were from elementary schools, the report said.

L’HAY-LES-ROSES, France: Three teenage girls admitted starting a fire in a suburban Paris housing project over the weekend that killed 17 people, including three children, police said yesterday. A fourth girl was held yesterday morning.

The fire in a 19-storey building south of Paris was the third fatal blaze in the Paris area in nine days. The death toll rose to 16 after a man died late Sunday in a hospital, where seven others were being treated for serious injuries, police said.

Three teenagers taken in for questioning on Sunday admitted having started the fire for fun, police said. Two of the suspects were 18-year-old, the other was 16, police said. Further details were not available.

Witnesses claimed to have seen a group of youths who lived in the building start the fire, said Patrick Seve, mayor of the town of L’HAY-LES-ROSES, near Orly airport, where the building was located.

The firs is believed to have broken out in the lobby (门厅) of the building before raging up a stairwell at least three floors. Some residents jumped from windows as the fire spread through the building’s entrance.

Authorities were investigating possible criminals in an August 26 fire that killed 14 African children and three adults in a Paris apartment building. Three days later, another fire killed seven in a building.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy suggested on French television on Sunday night that copycats (盲目模仿者) were at work. “Each time there is a new story, sometimes that gives ideas to people who then turn into criminals,” Sarkozy said, promising severe punishment for anyone found guilty of arson (纵火).

C. They were not satisfied with the surroundings.

D. They wanted to warm themselves.

23.   From the fourth and fifth paragraphs we know that ________.

A. the witnesses must have put out the fire

B. the lobby of the building was covered with wood.

C. the witnesses were familiar with the teenagers

D. the residents shouldn’t have jumped from windows

24.   What the Minister said in the last paragraph means that ________.

A. he doesn’t like to listen to new stories

B. he has no time to write new stories

C. teenagers often have ideas to turn into criminals

D. teenagers may do the same as others have done

Preschoolers pretending to shop for Barbie doll’s social evening were more likely to choose cigarettes if their parents smoked, and wine or beer if their parents drank, a study found.

Researchers observing the children’s play found that the ones who watched PG (parent guidance) or R-rated movies (17岁以下青少年非家长陪同不得观看的电影) also were more likely to choose alcohol for Barbie.

A 4-year-old girl show Barbie-sized tobacco in the pretend store and said: “I need this for my man. A man needs cigarettes.”

A 6-year-old boy offered the doll cigarettes and said: “Honey, have some smokes. Do you like smoke?I like smokes.”

Parents who watched from behind a one-way mirror were surprised by their children’s choices, said study co-author Mediline Dalton of Dartmouth Medical School.

“It’s a very unhappy experience to be a parent and see your children imitate your behavior,” she said.

“The study suggests that prevention efforts should target younger children,” Dalton said.

The study included 120 children, aged 2- to 6. An adult researcher led a standardized play activity in which each child, acting as a Barbie or Ken doll, shopped for a visiting friend.

A store stocked with 133 miniature (缩样) items gave the children choices — including meat, fruit, vegetables, snacks, non-alcohol drinks, cigarettes, beer and wine.

The children could “buy” anything they wanted by filling a small grocery cart and taking it to a small checkout counter.

Twenty-eight per cent of the children bought cigarettes, and 61 per cent bought alcohol. The children whose parents smoked were almost four times more likely to buy cigarettes. The children whose parents dank at least monthly were three times more likely to buy alcohol.

25.   It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that ________.

A. preschoolers enjoy more cigarettes than their parents’

B. Barbie doll’s social evening is popular among the children

C. parents shouldn’t allow their children to see films

26.   Parents who watched their children’s choices were surprised because ________.

A. their children had learned so much about society

B. their children had spent so much money on cigarettes

C. their children could treat their friends so nicely

D. their children had become so interested in smoking

27.   The study., as the text shows, was conducted ________.

A. in a secret way B. by children themselves

C. through activities D. in a shopping mall

28.   The last paragraph shows us ________.

A. the result of the study B. the difficulties of the study

C. the hobbies of the parents D. the hobbies of their children

Ten years of using a mobile phone results in no increased risk of a tumor (肿瘤) in the nerve connecting the ear to the brain, researchers said on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

But among public concern about a possible link, the scientists who conducted the largest study so far on the subject said they could not rule out a higher risk over a longer period.

“The results of our study suggest there is no substantial risk in the first decade after starting use,” said Anthony Swerdlow of the Institute of Cancer Research.

“Whether there are longer-term risks remains unknown, reflecting the fact that this is a relatively recent technology.”

The study, published in the British Journal of Cancer, focused on the risk of acoustic neuroma (听觉神经瘤), benign tumors which grow in the nerve connecting the ear and inner ear to the brain, close to where handset are held.

Research has also investigated the possible association of other kinds of brain tumor with mobile phones but scientists say acoustic neuroma would be a prime candidate to be affected.

Previous independent studies have found mobile phone radiation may have some effect on the human body, such as heating up the brain and causing headaches and feeling of sickness.

But no study that could be independently repeated has proved mobile phones have permanent harmful effects and the mobile phone industry argues there is no conclusive evidence that electromagnetic radiation causes harm.

About 780 million mobile phones are expected to be sold this year, and nearly 2 billion people around the world use one.

The institute’s analysis pooled studies conducted in Britain, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden ─ all countries where mobile phones were introduced early.

Cancer charities (慈善团体) welcomed the findings.

“However, it’s important researchers continue to monitor phone users over coming years as mobiles are still a relatively new invention,” said Cancer Research UK’s Julie Sharp.

29.   Public are concerned about ________.

A. whether mobile phone does harm to their ear

B. whether mobile phone does harm to their health

C. what kind of phone they should use

D. why the new finding is opposite to the old one

30.   The researchers have drawn a conclusion that ________.

A. there is no risk for people to use mobile phone

B. mobile phone radiation may have effect on human body

C. so far there is no connection between mobile phone and risk

D. there is evidence that mobile phone causes harm to human body

31.   The underlined word “pooled” in the tenth paragraph means ________.

A. put together B. gave out C. sent off D. sent together

32.   Researchers will continue their study because ________.

A. they will lose their job if they stop

B. they want to stop people using mobile phone

C. they think they can greatly improve mobile phone

D. they believe ten years is not long enough
