¡¡¡¡One student took a box of chicken to class. Another carried on a cell-phone 36 , and still another whistled loudly every time the 37 turned his back.

¡¡¡¡Reform school? No. College.

¡¡¡¡More and more, professors say, they are coming across 38 students in their classrooms. Many of today's young scholars(ѧÕß) arrive late, leave 39 , talk loud or take care of personal 40 such as paying bills during class.

¡¡  Why are the students behaving badly?

¡¡¡¡"Because they can," said a student of University of North Texas. "A lot of the time, the professors let them get 41 with it."

¡¡¡¡Some educators say it is time to bring politeness back to their classrooms¡ªand even 42 taking some of the blame for bad behavior. They say that rude students are by no means the majority but that one of them can ruin an entire 43 .

People are 44 when they learn that impolite behavior is becoming more and more common in 45 education, says Dr. Gerald Amanda, a counselor at City College of San Francisco. They 46 some high school students to misbehave but think those who get to 47 will behave more politely.

¡¡¡¡Dr. Amanda believes that society in 48 has become more tolerant(ÈÝÈ̵Ä) of rude behavior and 49 people in power, including Professors, no longer 50 standards for 51 . That leads to a growing imprudence(ÇáÂÊÐÐΪ) 52 some college students. "There's a great 53 of bad behavior in the world around them, and young people see it and 54 disrespect," said Dr. Amanda, 55  that sometimes students "have no idea that they are being rude."

¡¡¡¡ During the dust-blown 1930s, everyone in our hometown fell on hard times, but Mom made sure none of us kids knew it. When it¡¡ 36¡¡ clothes, we five sisters had two or three dresses each. "There must be a way," I¡¡ 43¡¡. I liked to believe that¡¡ 44¡¡ things could happen to us. I¡¡ 45¡¡ that a rainbow on our farm led to a pot of gold¡¡ 46¡¡ that Dad discovered oil on our land.

¡¡¡¡ The next morning Mom called me into the kitchen. "I have an idea," she said. ¡°You and Helen are¡¡ 47¡¡ the same size.¡¡ 48¡¡ you gave her your new red dress, I could fix you up the¡¡ 49¡¡ that your cousin Esther sent." I went off to school feeling greatly relieved(¿íο).

She went up to Mom and hugged her,  then¡¡ 51¡¡ afraid she might be wrinkling(ŪÖå) the new dress. Finally Helen took it and held it in front of her. I¡¡ 52¡¡ Helen's new dress without a bit of envy.

¡¡¡¡ I guess I should look upon it as a sweet proof of my tastes. My 17-year-old son, who had for so long¡¡ (36)¡¡ my choice of clothing, now¡¡ (37)¡¡ searches through my closet. While I was standing at the kitchen window, five-year-old Spencer, my oldest son, ran into the house ¡¡36¡¡, ¡°We need a doctor out here. Hurry, Mom.¡± ¡°what¡¯s wrong?¡± I asked. Spencer anxiously told me he had found a dead bird that needed a doctor.

When the lights in Los Angeles went out on Monday afternoon, my first thought was about my Department of Water and Power(DWP) bill. I knew it was not paid by the ¡¡ 36¡¡ time. Yet once I looked at it, I knew the problem was bigger than personal ¡¡37¡¡  The bill was only six days late, not long enough for the DWP to ¡¡38¡¡ my power.

Next I wondered if there might be a problem in my ¡¡39¡¡ , or perhaps my neighborhood. I stepped ¡¡40¡¡ to take a look, but nothing was happening, just the ¡¡41¡¡ mid-afternoon silence. When I came back in, my wife was on the phone ¡¡42¡¡ a friend who had also ¡¡43 ¡¡her power.

I thought this was bigger than I imagined. I dug through a drawer and pulled our ¡¡ 44¡¡ , the one we keep for when the earthquake ¡¡45   . One of my fondest childhood  50¡¡ is of the 1965 New York power failure, when I just¡¡ 51¡¡ four. I lived on the 10th floor of an apartment, and the entire world was ¡¡52¡¡¡¡ by candles. I remember my father coming home early, the soft stillness of our kitchen, the unimaginable ¡¡53¡¡ of the skyline as it settled into night.

Late Monday, ¡¡54¡¡ power had been restored, I told all this to a friend. "It was ¡¡55   ," I said about the 1965 New York power failure.
