While traveling abroad, Mr. Jackson Frank ran short of money. So he wrote to his brother, asking for £500. “Send the money by telegram,” he wrote, “ to the Fisher Bank”.
After a week he began calling at the Fisher Bank. “Nothing has come for you”, he was told. As this went on, Mr. Frank got more and more worried. In the fifth week Mr. Frank was taken away by the policemen for failing to pay for the bill. He tried to explain the problem to them, but no one believed him. He was sent to prison for sixty days.
When he came out, he went immediately to the Fisher Bank. The clerk he spoke to was a new man. “Have you received £500 for me?” he asked. “My name is Jackson Frank.”
The clerk checked his books. “Yes, Mr. Jackson, it’s here. It came by telegram, let me see, oh, three months ago. We wondered where you were.” He showed Mr. Frank the order.
The order read: “Pay Mr. Frank Jackson the sum of £500 …”
“But my name is Jackson Frank, not Frank Jackson.”
“Oh, that’s all right, sir. It’s your money.” The clerk laughed. “It was a mistake, sir! We took your family name to be Jackson by mistakes.”
Mr. Frank was silent. He really wanted to hit somebody. At last he said, “We are all humans? But I think some humans need kicking.”

Being seventeen has many problems that only another seventeen-year-old would understand. The biggest, I think, is learning to get along well with adults. I have found that when dealing with grown-ups it is wise to remember two things.
1. Always use your head.
2. Never use your head.
For example, one day just before supper, my mother sent me to the store for a loaf of whole-wheat bread. They didn’t have any. When I told my mother, she said, “Well, what kind did you get?” I told her I didn’t get any. She looked as if I had just announced that I was leaving home for good. “For goodness sake,” she said. “If they didn’t have whole-wheat, you should have got something else! Why don’t you use your head?”
Not long after that, she sent me to the store for some white oil cloth. They din’t have any, so I bought seven yards of purple. I thought it was pretty. Mother did not. She said, “Who ever heard of purple oil cloth in a red kitchen?” I told her I was only trying to use my head. She said, “Well, don’t! And in the future, if you can’t get what I send you for, don’t get anything.”
See what I mean?
There are other things that seem a little strange, too. If my father goes out for the evening, he tells me to “look after” my mother and sister. But, if the family goes out, and I want to stay home, my father won’t let me. He doesn’t feel comfortable if I am at alone. That means I am old enough to “look after” my mother and sister but not old enough to “look after” myself!
Another problem is what to do when you trip over the cat and land with your head in the refrigerator, causing a large lump to appear just over the right eyebrow. In this case, your father
could feel free to explode with a few rude words. Your sister could cry to her heart’s content. Your mother could, and probably would do both. What about you? You are seventeen and can’t do anything! You are too young to curse, and “big boys” don’t cry. So you just stand there looking more stupid than usual. But in spite of all this, I still think seventeen is a wonderful age!
44. The main idea of the passage is that ___________________________.
A. young children are good for nothing
B. being seventeen has too many responsibilities
C. a seventeen-year-old boy is the sun of the family
D. seventeen-year-olds have special problems
45. The author says that the biggest problem is ____________________.
A. learning how to use one’s head. B. learning how to get along with grown-ups
C. assuming担任 responsibilities D. showing you can be trusted
46. The author complains that there is no acceptable way for a seventeen-year-old boy to ____________.
A. behave when he hurts himself B. avoid tripping over the cat
C. act when he is in the kitchen D. prevent his sister from crying
47. The main idea is supported chiefly by _____________________.
A. experiences that happened to the author’s friends
B. imaginary experiences of a typical seventeen-year-old
C. incidents form the author’s own experiences
D. wonderful experiences of a seventeen-year-old
C
For new countries joining the European Union, and older ones getting used to their dark red passports, becoming “Europeans” is a bit like marrying into a large, eccentric 古怪的family. Europeans have a lot in common but it is their differences, not their similarities, that attract the
attention of sociologists 社会学家 and marked researchers, and are more interesting.
★ 5% of Germans live alone; by only 9% of Spaniards. Perhaps this explains why Spaniards
lead Europe in the habit of going out for a drink.
★ The British attend more adult evening classes than anyone else in Europe, and the Belgians least. So it can’t just be the dark evenings. There are no figures on how many Britons go for a drink afterwards. If there were, they might be up at the top with Spain!
★ The British think black cats are lucky. Every other European country regards them unlucky.
★ The Dutch and Germans are the greatest caravanners 活动房居住者, but the Germans like bigger beds in their caravans.
★ The French are the most athletic Europeans. Next come the Dutch. But the Belgians, just over the border, play fewest sports.
★ The Germans spend twice as much on heating as the Spaniards. Well, of course they do, it’s colder.
★ Dutch husbands do the household shopping a lot more often than Italians or Spaniards.
★ The French are the champion public transport commuters 经常往返者 of Europe. If you hate commuting, go and live in the Netherlands, where journeys to work are shorter than anywhere else.
★ The amount of direct eye-contract between strangers is three times greater among Spaniards than it is among the British or Swedes. Sharing a lift is torture for both the British and the Swedish.
★ No European countries really agree with any other about how to make good coffee. All of them are different.
There are exceptions to all these rules. Deal with them in the spirit of my 8-year-old daughter. “if you don’t understand each other’s language, you just laugh a lot, and eat, and point at thing.”
48. We can know from this passage that _________________.
A. sociologists are most interested in the idea of European Union
B. most European countries are not willing to join the European Union
C. Europeans have more differences than similarities
D. trade opportunities exist in the cultural differences in the European Union
49. If you work or live in Belgium, you will ______________________.
A. have to change your living places often
B. seldom see people playing sports
C. not get used to its colder weather
D. be invited to go for a drink frequently
50. What does the underlined sentence “Sharing a lift is torture for both the British and Swedish.” Mean?
A. The British and the Swedish care about their safety most.
B. The British and the Swedish like to appear gentle and smart.
C. The British and the Swedish hate to look at each other face to face.
D. The British and The Swedish enjoy a richer life than others.
51. In the last paragraph, the author wants to express his idea that _____________________.
A. his daughter knows well how to understand foreigners in unfamiliar situations
B. Europeans actually share the same culture even if they have different languages
C. being a European, you will have no living trouble at all in the European Union
D. there are differences between European countries, but don’t take it too seriously
D
It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No, I am not. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets. Whether they have realized or not, women are besieged by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?
But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their minds through their looks. The richness of their mind proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called “aunt” or “granny” can still maintain her
beauty is she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart, great courage, concern for others…etc…
In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty, which is pure and real.
Reading and learning are the best way to keep one youthful. Good books are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one’s heart and looks.
52. Which of the following do you think is the best title for this passage?
A. The concept of youth B. What is beauty C. Beauty and Women D. What is fashion
53. The underlined word “besieged” may mean ______________.
A. belonged to B. beside C. drew D. surrounded with
54. “So who dare to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?” means ______
A. no one dares to notice that dressing up needs money
B. no one dares to fail to care for her appearance and youth with dressing up
C. everyone dares to notice that dressing up needs money
D. everyone does not dare to fail to care for her appearance and youth with dressing up
55. What’s the writer’s attitude of this passage?
A. He thinks that richness is beautiful.
B. It’s impossible to be old if you keep a young mind.
C. The richness of the mind is really beautiful.
D. An old lady can keep her beauty if she has rich knowledge.

Most people supported the policy, repeating the old line that most beggars were not real beggars. And that they annoy people constantly, according to a newspaper poll计票.

例文
The Way to Success
The topic I’m going to speak is The Way to Success.
As everyone knows, no pains no gains. If we want to succeed in what we’d like to do, we must work hard at what we’re learning. And we must have a strong will for where there’s a will, there’s a way. Of course, we should have a scientific way in learning and doing things. May I take Li Ying, the best student in English in my class, as an example? After physical training in the early morning, she insists on reading English aloud for about 40 minutes. She tries to speak English as much as possible in and after class. She’s stuck to it for years. That’s the way to success.
