When do you become an adult, a grown-up? At eighteen? Twenty-one? Thirty? Adulthood
may seem a long way away to you, but the fact is that you are in the process of becoming an adult right now.The changes are so gradual that you may not notice them, but you can be sure that they're happening.
When you were a child, a parent or older relative probably bought your clothes and helped you clean up your room. Now you are likely to care for your bedroom, and to share other house-work.You may once have had trouble getting your homework finished on time.By now, you may have learned to rush yourself. You know how much time you need.Do you remember begging your parents to stop for ice cream ,or take an after-school job when you want money for a new clock radio? Of course ,you don't always plan your time and your money perfectly. But you're learning.
As you get older, you have more privileges( 特权 )and more responsibilities. You may
baby-sit for younger brothers and sisters ,help cook dinner, and do odd jobs to contribute to the family income. You may get to stay up to watch a late movie on television ,sit in on adult conversations, take subways and buses alone ,or go on camping trips with your friends.Eventually, you will have a job and an apartment of your own. You’ll become a voter and perhaps a husband or wife.maybe even a parent. But doing things adults do does not necessarily mean you will be wiser ,braver, or more self-assured( 自信 ).It takes time to gain knowledge and build self-confidence.Adults need to test themselves in the world, just as you do as a teenager.Being an adult is a continual process of growth.

Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not onIy does he want to say it well ,but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand he wants to teach them ,and he wants them to learn from What artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain ,because painters translate their experiences into shapes and colors, not words. They seems to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible ,is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us.Without their works we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors,or have felt the delight which they brought to the artist.
Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and calm ;their choices show that these aspects of the world are worth looking at,and that they contain beautiful sights.Contemporary ( 当代 ) artists might say that they merely choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, and that there is nothing more in it.Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.
If one painter chooses to paint an injured leg and another a lake in moonlight ,each of
them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing ( 强调 ) us something ,an of which means that, consciously( 有意识地 )or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.

Some experts feel 由 at the automobile is bound to( 注定 )fall into disuse. They see a day in the not-too-far future when all autos will be deserted and allowed to rust( 生锈 ).Other experts, however, think the auto is here to stay. They hold that the car will remain a leading means of urban travel in the foreseeable future.
The motorcar will undoubtedly change over the next 3O years. It should become smaller ,
safer, and more economical ,and should not be powered by the gas engine. The car of the future should be far more pollution-free than present types.
Regardless of its power source ,the auto in the future will still be the main problem in urban traffic jam.One proposed solution to this problem is the automated highway system.
When the auto enters the highway system, a retractable( 可伸缩的 )am will drop from the auto and make contact with a rail ,which is similar to those powering subway trains electrically.Once connected to the rail, the car will become electrically powered from the system, and control of the vehicle will pass to a central computer. The computer will then monitor all of the car movements.
The driver win use a telephone to dial instructions about his destination into the system.
The computer will calculate the best route , and reserve space for the car all the way to the correct exit from the highway. The driver will then be free to relax and wait for the buzzer ( 蜂鸣器 ) that will warn him of his coming exit.It is estimated( 估计 ) that an automated highway will be able to handle 10,000 vehicles per hour, compared with the 1,500 to 02,000 vehicles that can be carried by a present-day highway.
52.The future car will be improved in all the following EXCEPT ________ .
A.its size
B.its shape
C.its cost
D.Its power source
53.What is the author's main concern?
A.How to improve the cars in the future.
B.How to make smaller and safer automobiles.
C.How to solve the problem of traffic jams.
D.How to develop an subway system.
54.What provides autos with electric power in an automated highway system?
A.A rail.
B.An engine.
C.A retractable arm.
D.A central computer.
55.What need drives do when they enter an automated highway system?
A.To direct the automobiles.
B.To operate the computer.

Life for Chinese Students

Chinese students are often busy, especially before they become college students. Early in the primary school, every child is expected to go to college. Pupils are usually seen loaded with heavy schoolbags. Going to middle school only means more exercises and examinations. The desks are piled with books and test papers. They have little time for entertainment. It is too much for teenagers. However, they have to face the challenge of the college entrance examination! But once admitted to universities, some students are so addicted to playing that they fail to graduate.
Something must be done so that students can enjoy their life while learning what ought to be learned in primary and middle schools. At college, students should learn enough to make a living after graduation.
