The story of Diego Maradona, the Argentinian football player, is the story of the rise and fall of a poor man who became a world star, but paid the price of fame. At 33 years of age, he is now at the end of a career (职业生涯) which saw him, in the 1980s, as the bright star of World Cup Football. In the 1990s, this career has come into a story of poor performance on the field, drug-taking, speaking ill of football officials, being forbidden and finally facing court action in which he has had to defend charges (指控) of shooting at several reporters.
Maradona was born in the poor area of Furito in Buenos Aires. Early in his life, he was able to realize a dream of most poor boys, the dream that the way out of poverty-trap is through success in sport. Sport in the world around is an activity open to all people, no matter what their background is.
Diego Maradona is one of eight children. His father is an Indian and mother an Italian. The games of football played in the dirty street outside his small white, one-storeyed home in Furito were to provide him with a passport out of the small town. Today, poorly dressed boys still run and kick balls around the street from which their hero traveled to become one of the world's great football artists.
Football expert Francis Corneo found Diego's gift. He says that the young player was “a natural”and there was nothing he could teach him. He had never seen anyone play like him in his thirty years' football life.
51.In the second paragraph of this passage, what does “poverty-trap” mean?
A.The low position in society.
B.Extremely poor condition in one's life.
C.Poor living conditions which are hard to escape from.

52.After rising to the height in his footall career, he has been in decline (衰落), for ______.
A.his performance is not as good as before on the field
B.he will be brought in an action against his bad deed
C.he showed no respect for some football officials
D.all the above
53.Sport is an activity open to all people, no matter what their background is. This sentence tells us ______.
A.everybody enjoys sport and could turn a dream into reality
B.through sport everybody may be successful and becomes a famous star in the world, no matter how poor he used to be.
C.if one wants to be a famous sport star, he must have a special background
D.people from working-class families will never get international success
54.We can infer from the passage that ______.
A.Maradona will face a possible prison term if found guilty (有罪) on the shooting charges

Money spent on advertising is money spent as well as any I know of. It serves directly to bring about a rapid sale of goods at reasonable prices, so setting up a firm home market and making it possible to provide for export (出口) at good prices. By drawing attention to new ideas it helps greatly to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it causes an increased need for labour, and is therefore a nice way to fight unemployment. It lowers the costs of many services ; without advertisements your daily newspaper would cost four times as much, the price of your television program would need to be doubled, and travel by bus or subway would cost more.
And perhaps most important of all, advertising provides a promise of reasonable value in the products and services you buy. Besides the fact that twenty-seven Acts of Parliament (国会)govern the terms of advertising , no regular advertiser dare produce anything that fails to live up to the promise of his advertisements. He might fool some people for a little while through misleading advertising. He will not do so for long, for the public has the good sense not to buy the poor goods more than once. If you see product frequently advertised, it is the proof I know that the product does what is promised for it, and that it has good value.
Advertising does more for the good of the public than any other force I can think of.
There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television person declare that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He was telling us the real difference. Of course advertising tries to persuade.
If its message were nothing but information, that would be difficult to get more people to buy, for even the choice of the colour of a shirt is a bit persuasive ----advertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. But perhaps that is what the well-known television person wants.
55.By the first sentence of the passage the writer means that ______.
A.he is fairly familiar with the cost of advertising
B.everybody knows well that advertising is a waste of money
C.advertising costs more money than everything else
D.money on advertising is worth spending
56.In the passage, which of the following is NOT included in the advantages of advertising?
A.Getting greater fame.
B.Providing more jobs.
C.Raising living standards.
D.Reducing newspaper cost.
57.The writer thinks that the well-known TV person is ______.
A.quite right in passing his judgement on advertising
B.interested in nothing but the buyers' attention
C.correct in telling the difference between persuasion and information
D.obviously unfair in his views on advertising
58.In the writer's opinion, ______.
A.advertising can seldom bring material interest to man by providing information
B.advertising informs people of new ideas rather than wins them over
C.there is nothing wrong with advertising in persuading the buyer
D.the buyer is not interested in getting information from an advertisement

Gina was surprised to find that it was not raining in London. She stepped down from the train that had brought her from Dover to Victoria Station and put her heavy suitcase on the platform. People were hurrying everywhere: through the entrances and exits, up and down the steps, along the other platforms and over to the ticket counters where there were already queues forming. The porters seemed to be busy helping other passengers. In Milan everyone told her that it was always raining in England. Today, however, they were wrong. It was warm and dusty just like at home. She could even hear someone speaking her native language somewhere near the station bookstall. She walked slowly towards the gate at the end of the platform where a railway official was collecting the tickets. She handed him her tickets and walked through. She looked up the station clock. Its hands were pointing to 3: 15pm .
A young woman was sitting on a bench reading an English magazine. She looked friendly so Gina went up to her.
“Excuse me,” she said. The young woman glanced up with a smile. “Can you tell me the way to circus ?”
“The circus?” The young woman looked puzzled. “What circus do you mean?”
Gina shook her head, “I'm sorry. I have just arrived from Italy to attend a school for overseas students in London. It is near the circus. ”
“Do you have a letter with the school's address on it?”
“Oh, yes. Now I remember. ” Gina opened her handbag and found a postcard with a British stamp on it.
“Ah,” said the young woman. “It's Oxford Circus that you want. It's the name of an area in the middle of London. You must go down these steps and take the Tube. Follow the colours. That's the easiest way. ” She showed Gina on the coloured map of the underground railway the route from Victoria to Oxford Circus. “Good luck,” she said. “And by the way, I come from Italy, too. ”

Why should anyone want to set aside a day to honour a lowly little groundhog (土拨鼠)? The answer to that question is not certain, but a group of people get together every Feruary 2 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to watch Punxsutawney “Pete” leave his burrow. What “Pete” does next, many believe, will show whether spring is just around the corner of a long way off. You see, in Pennsylvania on this date there is usually a great deal of snow on the ground, and the little animal has been hibernating during the long, cold winter. He filled himself during the autumn months and then went into his burrow for a long sleep, his body fat helping keep him alive. But as he appears on February 2, he looks very thin. If the sun is shining brightly and he sees his shadow, according to old stories, it frightens him back into his home where he will stay another six weeks. Should it be cloudy and gray, the little animal will supposedly walk around for food----a sure sign that spring is near. While many believe in the groundhog's information about future happening , it is unwise to accept them as a fact.
63.According to this passage , why do people gather every year to watch the groundhog?
A.He's clever and playful, and children love to watch him.
B.He's looking for food and the people want to help him find it in the snow.
C.Many people believe him to be a sign of the coming of spring.
D.The people want to be sure he is alive after such a long winter.
64.How sees the groundhog manage to stay alive during the long winter?
A.People send out food for him.
B.He stores body fat before winter comes.
C.He wakes up on nice days and hunts for food.
D.It is something unknown to people.
65.What information does the groundhog supposedly give?
A.If he sees his shadow, it will soon be spring.
B.If he does his shadow, spring will not arrive for another six weeks.
C.If he does not see his shadow, spring will arrive in six weeks.
D.If he does not see his shadow , all the snow will disappear immediately.
66.What does the word “burrow” mean in the passage? It means “ ______”.
A.hole in the wall
B.cave
C.underground hole
D.cottage on a hill
